A great forum been coming back for over a decade now I think.
All the best to everyone and hopefully this team pulls off a championship someday!
Also are a bunch of people heading over to https://www.forumcanucks.com/ ? It would be great to keep this community going, but I know that a forum closure can result in a lot of people heading off or just splitting up to different areas online.

Yeah agreed. Miller has openly said how much he dislikes certain media people in Van. Don't get me wrong that is totally fair, but as a Captain regularly talking to media I think it could lead to be a massive distraction (especially when times are tough).
Hughes is driven and is willing to speak up. He also seems liked by everyone and I think he'll be a good fit for captain + having Petey and Miller flank him with the As.
Also it might help us resign Hughes to his next big deal when that comes around.

I think Cole has played on his offhand before right?
My guess is he'll spend the season with Quinn and Hronek will lead pair 2.
Soucy will get a shot there to play top 4 minutes and based on how these two pairings go we'll adjust from there if needed.

Yeah it sounds like pretty much all of them agree he is really good/great offensively with a big shot.
The defensive play is much more mixed. One group seems to feel he is average and the other is below average.
Sounds like a Hughes situation and we'll need to pair a defensive Dman with him on that second pair. Cole should work this year, but I guess we'll see if Soucy is able to play top 4. Might be a better #5 and we go out and find another top 4 either this year or next.

Pretty close to fair. I'd say maybe they need to make that 2nd a 1st (Demko is BPA here I'd say, granted hard to compare).
But overall for Van I'd say no. Goaltending is such an annoying issue to have and we've really lucked out since the early 2000s when it was a disaster. Demko is our guy for now, if Silvos shows he's a #1 then we can trade Demmer.
Until then it is his net to hold and this team needs to make the playoffs

Yeah as said above I feel like the Canucks should only entertain this trade option if Pesce is happy to resign here and Van is good with the money.
Otherwise we definitely should not be giving up another 1st round pick and a solid prospect on such a big risk.

Anyway, I'm pumped for the dude and hope this is a massive year for him (30+ goals)! Glad we didn't dump him for nothing (even if it meant cap space), I think he has it in him still to be a great top 6 winger.

The issue is who do you want to lose to waivers?
Could they send down Irwin?
Would that work? I imagine he wouldn't be claimed and if he was it isn't the biggest loss to find another #7D.I still think they should look to move a winger. If Pearson really is healthy then I think Beau or Garland are good options to move out. Beau is likely easier to move (especially retained), but Garland if a decent trade is there would help clear us some cap going forward.

I'd still do the trade. We need the D and Garland hasn't found a fit in our top 6 so far. We also get some cap.
If the deal is so lopsided and Peeke is mid, then maybe we pull in an extra mid round pick too.

It feels like it is starting to look like we'll be keeping Meyers.
Not the worst choice. Should be a fine 3RD and can play up in the top 4 if injuries hit.
Maybe they get some offers on him, but otherwise unless we absolutely need the cap space this season, might be worth holding onto him.

That feels like a solid trade. While a Dman may have more value then a winger right now, the Jets need players who are signed. This way they got a good winger locked in for a while longer still

Shout out to the Canucks media team. Really liking the off season mini docs about some players. Also loved that building blue segments they did with all the prospects.
Nice hearing/seeing the different sides to JT and getting his thoughts on some of the stuff over the last year+.

I wonder if Columbus would be interested in something like Garland (maybe +) for Peeke?
They have a top 4 set in stone already on D (I'm guessing Guddy is #4 since they just gave him a big contract), so Peeke would play on their bottom pairing and that still pushes out other guys.
This way they get a scoring winger to add to their top 6 and Canucks get a youngish Dman back who could either be an overpaid bottom pair guy or has the potential to reach top 4 level.
Cap works for both, Columbus still has cap left and Van frees up a little.

I don't blame Petey for waiting, of course I wish he would just sign an 8 year x 10 million deal right now and not think about it again. Clearly though that would be a heavy discount by Petey.
At this point I would guess the type of extension Petey is looking for will be something like 4-5 years around 10-11 million. That will put him at 29/30 years old when he needs to resign, at which point the cap will be higher and if he is as good as a lot of us think he is, then he'll be looking at maybe closer to 13-14 million per.
Matthews is doing it and I think a lot of big players might start structuring their deals to maximize earnings. No need to rush into the 8 year deal when you're 26 and instead sign it at 30. Look at Miller even, a more reasonable price, but got his big deal at like 30.
Anyway main focus for this team is to not suck next year and hopefully make the playoffs. If we're garbage again then I imagine Petey is going to want out and who can blame him.

Yeah it is a big aav for sure, but while I don't love the deal I don't hate it either.
Toronto is kinda setting themselves up for a 5 year window here to really go for it. They have their best player locked up and as long as the cap goes up (we've all heard that before lol) they should be fine in terms of managing it (sacrifices always have to be made). Nylander will likely go short term too maybe around 9-10 million?
At least when all is said and done they will have had Matthews through his prime and had more then enough cracks at the cup. Not the best outcome, but could have been worse.

A really solid signing up against the cap.
Yeah not great in his own end based on advance stats and what people are saying here, but put up crazy good numbers offensively. Looks about ready to breakout as a major offensive Dman in the league. Definitely trying to set himself up for a big contract in a few years.

Yes to the first trade. We get a little weaker at 2C, but free up a bunch of cap which will help in a couple years when our team is aiming to really compete. (Unlikely though, I think Miller is going to be with us for a while now).
2nd trade no. Keep the 1st from Boston. We need bigger defensive Dman around Hughes and Hronek and I don't think Fabbro is a strong enough top 4 D for giving up a 1st. Meyers cap doesn't matter, he's up after this year.

SJ is rebuilding I thought? I imagine they want to finish low in the standings so aging veterans for a couple years would seem fine to them. They can also start trading pieces to contenders for draft picks.
I doubt they move their young prospects at this time. Hoglander I'm sure they'd like, but likely in a trade for a 26+ year old player on the roster and not a 19 year old.

Vancouver would be giving up the literal best #1 Dman they have ever had (and he's young still). So the cost being NJ's 2nd line center, a 2nd pair LD and a top prospect (while agreed it is a crazy high price) would likely be what Van needs to pull the trigger.
I'm sure they'll be waiting for the moment Hughes is a UFA anyway to throw a big contract his way.

Yeah it would obviously have to be heavily weighted in Van's favor. NJ would have to accept they'll lose the trade, but look at it as more of a business transaction then anything else. 3 Hughes Bros leading your team for the next decade would be awesome.

Honestly yeah it sounds crazy, but Hughes is no doubt the best player involved (Hischier is 2nd). We get an extremely good 2 way C and their top D prospect + a solid 2nd pair LD. Yes NJ of course comes out weaker, but I could still see them being very competitive for a long time still and again the business having all 3 bros would do for the organization alone would be huge.
(Oh for fun one last addition, in this hypothetical Van only does it if they have a trade lined up for Miller. Don't need a ton back, but can't have his cap there too and fit everyone in lol).

Yup I'm good with this. Petey seems to not want the extra duties that involve being a captain. If Hughes is interested I'm happy with it (helps encourage a resign too I'd say). Miller will be best having responsibility and being a leader, but not the main leader/voice.
That being said, I'm also fine with running 3 As for this season or until the team feels ready for the next captain.

I'm excited about the Pens this year. Going be cheering for them to have a solid year.
Yeah the core is old and they only have 2-3 years to take their shot, but that's great. It'll be exciting then once it is over they can turn straight into a massive rebuild and start trading off assets.
Dubas is honestly in a pretty exciting position I'd say. Go for it now then you get to do a rebuild from the ground up leading the organization.

How will Boston fit that under their cap? Also Carlo bringing back an overpriced RD, a middle 6 winger and a c+ prospect for Carlo who is on a good contract and is a good #4 defensive RD seems like a bad trade for them. They could easily get more for Carlo I would guess.
In terms of Beau, I'd be fine with the trade proposed here. But if it is easier to just trade him for a late 2nd to a contender at 50% retained then sign someone like Reese for essentially the same purpose would also work.
