  1. Yeah also didn't expect this buyout or wanted it. Thought OEL played well in his first season here and poorly this year (injured supposedly). Would have much rather tried to work with him and mount a comeback season. If it didn't work in a year or two then do the buyout. Having a 2+ million cap penalty for like 7/8 years is gonna suck, especially the 2 years where is is 4.7 in a time period when we should be competing.
  2. Great contract, the Devils are looking excellent and so young still. Hahah a lot of Canucks fans here seem kinda annoyed with Bratt/NJ. Yeah he didn't have a great playoffs like a bunch of the Devils, but damn how can anyone argue against how that team is coming together. Their top 3 forwards are all signed long term to good deals and are 24 or younger still (Meier is likely being added to this too, so another young 30-40 goal scorer with some bite too). They are young and don't have too many olders guys taking up too much cap, plus they are just starting their contention period, lots more cracks at the playoffs to come. Also 26 million left in cap space this offseason. I dunno all in all I'd say NJ looks pretty good and I like how they've been building that team and signing their young guys. Hopefully the Canucks can start locking in the young core to 8 year deals when the time/price is right. I think Petey will be a big factor in what our team ceiling is.
  3. Excited about Raty! He needs to develop more and I'm hoping for a big season in Abby. Doesn't matter to me if he doesn't get called up, but there is a chance for sure. Like many of us I hope the revamp of the development system in Vancouver has been going successfully and Raty benefits from that in the areas he needs help in.
  4. Winnipeg screams yes, but not a deal I would do if I was Montreal. I like Suzuki a lot. Had a solid year on a terrible team and is their captain.
  5. I think every Canucks fan would want to do this deal. We know a winger needs to be moved for cap reasons and Peeke is somewhat young and signed for 3 years at a decent price (if he's top 4 quality). I'm just not sure how highly they value him. RHD are often needed by many teams, but it is true they really need quality forwards now that their D group is bolstered. Maybe Garland and Rathbone for Peeke? Or Garland and Beau for Peeke and a bottom 6 winger of theirs (to clear some cap).
  6. Severson is really good by all accounts, but is likely too old for our core and Hronek kinda fills his role as a 2 way RHD. I agree with others that are saying we should focus on a cheaper target that is primarily a shutdown/pk Dman. Go after Schenn again maybe offer something like 1.5 x 3 years for him or 2 x 2 and resign Bear for a couple years below 3 million. Or shoot a bit bigger and go for Mayfield and pay a little extra. Our Dgroup then goes roughly: - Hughes - Hronek - OEL - Meyers (aim to trade him, if not run the year out as our #4/5) - Bear - UFA D (Schenn/Mayfield/Graves) - Rookie(s) (Hirose/Rathbone/Brisebois/Johansson/Poolman?) A lot of this group will be based on how OEL bounces back and if Hronek is good or not. If they both pull through then it could be okay. Still will need some work, but an improvement over this year and with consistent offense and good goaltending we might be decent.
  7. I like the player and speed he brings. But seems like an overpay for no reason. More like a 3-3.5 million dollar guy for a few years. Maybe Chicago is struggling to find talent to join them? Hopefully someone is interested in one of our currently signed wingers. Even for a mid pick.
  8. Yeah good ideas overall. Like those 2 UFA Dman you proposed we sign even though them combined with Hughes, OEL, Hronek is an extremely expensive d group. If those happened I'd pass on Bear (maybe trade his rights for a 6th or 7th if possible). Podz at center is fun, but he won't be ready for that role yet, so instead of Bear use that money on a 3C (could even an older guy for 1-2 years). I'm still high on Hogs so definitely resign him and play him lots.
  9. Like the idea of trading down to move bad contracts. But honestly likely not worth it. Meyers only has 1 year left and if the draft is as stacked as people are saying I think there is way more value in keeping him for 1 more year and taking best player available at 11. side note... I think Chicago would do this immediately. They are a rebuilding team and we are offering them to go 8 spots earlier in the 1st round for just 1 year of a couple cap dumps? They are a cap floor team, that is an easy yes. They still need to ice a team and Meyers will play 25 mins a night for them.
  10. The point of the point is to address the numerous headlines/topics around the Canucks being over the cap already for next season. I think OP just wanted to clarify we are technically fine for next season and it is unlikely the Canucks will be in a situation to dump a solid player like Garland or Beau for nothing. For goaltending I think Silovs should be the Abby starter for 1 more year, so that means Martin back in as backup. He wasn't great, but had to play way more then he should have this past year. Demko will be the make or break for this team in the net, not who our backup ends up being if it is very concerning they can go spend a million on a backup, but again Demko is the plan for Van in net. (I have faith in Demko btw to be a great starter next season) Then yeah the main focus will likely be on acquiring a 3C and rounding out the D. The plan is still to move a winger which will free up another 4-6 million in cap depending on who goes or will be apart of the trade to acquire something like a 3C. If they can move Meyers as well (this one can be for nothing) then that is even more cap freed up to perhaps look at getting another top 4 dman.
  11. Florida made the biggest trade last season/offseason right? The Calgary/Florida deal was massive for both organizations and had huge risks involved for both teams. Vegas has been making massive moves since they were created. From big trades to get Eichel to signing guys like Pietro to dumping their all star goalie for nothing. That team feels like it immediately established a reputation of going for the cup no matter the cost. Carolina got unlucky with injuries sure, but they themselves acknowledge the need for more scoring, so I bet you they wish they did something more around that (and likely will this offseason). So sure not a ton a deadline moves this year maybe, but these teams are taking risks and have made big moves over the past few years to try and build a championship team.
  12. Keep Boeser. His value is as low as it has ever been, but we have seen him play really well during different periods throughout his time here. Give him another go. Garland and/or Beau are the ones I'd move. Garland has upside, but man he can be frustrating at times to watch. Maybe just paired with the wrong players, but so hot or cold.
  13. Calgary isn't in the worst position in my opinion. Yeah not a good year and Hub struggled. However, lots of good players (mostly solid contracts) and a great D-core. I bet they bounce back next season. Coaching change will help a lot.
  14. I agree they don't need to panic. The team is great and mostly fairly young still. They are in their competition window, but they will have more cracks at it still. However...they still got swept no matter how you want to swing it. They do need to add more scoring, Carolina themselves it sounds like tried to add scoring multiple times over the last year. Miller is signed and provides offensive. I think a deal could be worked out here. Depends on how high they are on KK and maybe someone like Morrow.
  15. I think this is a trade that could be great for both teams. Carolina really needs to add something significant around scoring. Miller is a great addition for them, will play in a no nonsense system and thrive. Canucks gets a 1st round pick, a young center who had their first really solid season and a RD prospect.
  16. I'd rather we go for Adma Lowry out of Winnipeg. 3rd line center at a cap hit of 3.25 for 3 more years. Winnipeg needs to do something and although I've heard they love Lowry, doesn't change the fact that changes need to happen there. Garland for Lowry? They get more scoring and Canucks get their 3C.
  17. I like the idea of trading down to move cap and pick up an extra draft pick, but this draft is so deep it is tough to give up the higher pick. Maybe something like this: To Van: 2023 19th overall pick 2023 2nd round pick 2024 Van 2nd round pick To Chi: 2024 Van 1st round Garland Vancouver gets another 1st and a 2rd in this draft plus a 2nd next one. Trading down a 1st usually nets you a couple picks (late first and a 2nd), Garland should be worth a 2nd. Chicago does it for our unprotected 1st next draft. Chicago gets a decent top 6 winger to start adding some culture and skill to the team for Bedard as well as our 1st next year. Having it be unprotected is the exciting part for them cause if we're a tire fire again then pick could be huge. If Van doesn't suck we could come out ahead here. Lots of risk and reward.
  18. If he is open to signing short term for like 1 mil then I'm open to giving him another crack at it. His injuries were unlucky. Worst case he can play in Abby if the left side in Van is full, but he could likely crack the top 6 if healthy or at least be our #7 Dman.
  19. I just don't see how anyone can judge this trade until 2 things happen: 1) Hronek is a legit top 4 RD. He is a great 2 way Dman that can contribute offensively and plays well in his own end. 2) He resigns with Vancouver at a cap hit we can manage (maybe 6.5ish with term or slightly more if his play is extremely strong). Without those 2 things happening then no the trade of course sucks. We need him to be the 2nd best Dman on the team and he has to sign here long term. After that it feels far more reasonable to judge the trade.
  20. I thought Dubas did a pretty good job, that team is clearly talented and had regular season success. Especially looking at the team this season and the deadline moves, at a certain point it falls on the players. His biggest issue was he overpaid for his core because he thought the cap would be way higher today then it is. But Covid happened and that threw everything off and he never was able to recover from that fully imo. This was likely some really good experience and training for Dubas being GM in Toronto lol. Made mistakes, learnt some stuff and now whoever gets him next is honestly gonna be rather lucky I'd guess.
  21. I'm open to trading Kuz for a pick and a young player with upside. However, I don't think Detroit is that team. Kuz is ready now, teams who are in win-now mode will be more interested then teams just now ending their rebuild phase.
  22. Yeah I'd do it. Boeser likely could still be the better offensive player at the end of the day. But we clear some cap and I like the style of game Crouse will bring. Arizona may want us to add though. So maybe we turn it into a bigger trade and move some money out. To Van: - Crouse To Ari: - Boeser - Meyers (50% retained) - Rathbone - 2023 3rd round pick I wonder if that would be interesting to Arizona. They get a scoring winger that needs a fresh start (neutral value), Meyers at 50% retained which isn't worth much however they do need the cap hits because they are around the floor, Rathbone is a C+ prospect I'd say (maybe B-) and the pick. Honestly they may still say no. Or they'd want to simplify it to Boeser + a pick for Crouse.
  23. I think Matthews stays in Toronto still. But for fun, if he was to move LA should go hard for him. They have tons of young players with lots of value. A bunch of talented wingers signed long term. 1st round pick next season. I'd go hard with an offer starting with Byfield and a 1st + a top 6 forward (lots to pick from, including some centers). Then smooth out the details maybe another prospect added in or another 1st round pick. LA gives up a ton of stuff to Toronto, but keeps most of their best players and adds an elite #1C (contract agreed upon prior to the trade). They still have great young players, guys like Kopitar who are good, but also about to expire in another year (10 million freed up) and LA is ready for their contending window. As a Canucks fan I hate it. We'd be playing regularly against McDavid, Matthews, Bedard all in the West...what the heck. But LA should do it, cause why not and Matthews will be a star in that city.
  24. What an interesting team lol. I think Matthews will sign there still. Might even be for less then originally planned due to repeatedly losing like this. They may need to move out someone significant though. Do a shakeup and clear some cap maybe (more like reallocate some cap). I've been hearing some Toronto coverage and they loved Schenn. Sounds like most fans/media want him resigned. Would like him back in Van, but good for him if this results in him getting some money from Toronto.
  25. Lol no shot Toronto even entertains this deal. Nylander is really good (borderline elite at times) and Rathbone couldn't even make the D-core of one of the worst defensive teams in the NHL. They may trade Nylander, but it'll be for much more then this.
