I think he got railroaded. lol

Ray, do you realize that Kesler's contract with the NTC was not of Jim Benning's doing but that of Mike Gillis. That contract was agreed upon in 2012 long before JB took over as GM. Contracts are legal documents and if you deliberately break a contract you will most likely be challenged in court and not only by the player and his agent but also the players association and possibly the league as well. I doubt you come out of that scenario without severe repercussions to the GM and the team. IMO, JB did what he could to salvage something out of a lousy contract. In contrast if you delve into the NTC or NMC clauses of JB's signings, the NTC contracts are really not that limiting to the GM if he wants to trade that player. As for the NMC clauses both Edler and Hamonic's contracts expire this year thus they do not need to be protected for the expansion draft. Granted; they may choose to sign elsewhere next season, but may opt to re-sign with the Canucks if a price and term can be agreed upon. The two glaring mistakes that JB made were signing Eriksson for both the price and term of the contract. Ferland was the other big mistake IMO as he already had previous concussion and other issues prior to being signed. It was a very risky move by JB and one that has not turned out well.

He is the forgotten D man for sure.

I think you have to take a closer look at those NTC's and NMC's to properly judge them Sid. Sutter: modified NTC, 15 teams he can not be traded to and UFA at end of season. Roussel: also modified NTC, only 5 he can not be traded to. Beagle, in same situation as Roussel. Edler, NMC was probably a good thing to do (do not have to protect him) and he is a UFA at the end of the season and free to re-sign with the Canucks after the expansion draft which is very likely. Myers, 10 team no trade list (hardly much of a limiting factor). Schmidt, 10 team NT list. Benn 5 team NT list and UFA end of season (might be re-signed for 1 yr so they meet the requirements of exposure). Hamonic full NMC but is a UFA at end of season and possibly re-signed after the expansion draft. Holtby, 4 team NT list. Ferland, full NMC (this was not a good signing or contract given his previous history with concussions). Eriksson, Another bad signing by Jim mainly because of the dwindling performance of the player and excessive cost of acquiring him which makes his contract impossible to move. All in all I would say that the NTC's are really not much of an obstacle if JB wants to move some of them. Eriksson and Ferland are poor signings but one has to realize that they also were some of the 1st moves that JB did as a rookie GM. His performance in the last few years has been much better IMO. One could also argue that Roussel and Beagle were poor signings but at the time of their signings I think he was looking for some leadership and some grit to compliment a very young and inexperienced team.

Juolevi is better than Benn at everything ...except hitting... Yes his skill set is better. Not sure why Ollie is out at the moment; there could be a number of reasons behind that move. For one he may be experiencing some level of discomfort in one of the injuries he sustained over the past few years. He may be out so the physio boys can work on trying to improve his lateral mobility that has not been as good as it was before his many injuries. So for us fans , all we can do is sit and wait for his return. I am sure we will see him back in the fold and on the ice in the next few weeks. I also expect that he will be a full time player for the Canucks next year barring anymore serious injuries.

I agree it is still a bit early for him to be in the big show but with continued improvement in his overall skating, he could find a spot in the bottom 6 as early as next year. Bottom 6 but also possibly a net front presence on the PP. Nice to see the big man taking strides in improving his game.

Not surprised that the US politics thread was so long. There was this humongous pile of total BS to dissect and discuss ad nauseum.

I was trying to be kind in my characterization of that person as he is very knowledgeable as far as determining the skill set of various players but you are right; he is very ignorant about the importance of honouring a players contract and not throwing them under the bus so to speak and also on just how difficult it can be to actually manage a team.
-
I think it comes down to what exactly that particular poster is really knowledgeable about such as evaluating skating, positioning etc. and what they obviously have no clue about such as the management side of the business. JB had very few options at his disposal when he took over the reigns from Mike Gillis. He inherited an aging team with some players on NMC or NTC clauses that had made a push for the cup in 2010 -11 and had very few NHL calibre prospects down on the farm. JB's initial year as GM was not without mistakes but he has become a much better GM over the last few years. Acquiring J.T. Miller turned out to be a very shrewd move and plucking Nate Schmidt out of Vegas for a 3rd is borderline theft. His drafting and development of those draft picks has, IMO, been top notch. His signing of Sutter and Beagle, while a bit pricey, was a good move as it surrounded a young core with seasoned veterans that were the character guys you need to help smooth the transition to the NHL for young players just starting out in the league. This management of players is not easy and the unexpected flat cap due to Covid and also the expansion draft certainly had a major effect on the ability to retain or resign some players. The numbers just were not do able to balance both cap and expansion protection issues and many players just did not fit under those limiting parameters so hard decisions had to be made and they were. This team has a bright future ahead of it and the next two years and beyond look very promising especially with all of the top notch prospects coming down the pipeline in those years.

True... but let's hope that they actually sank in this time.

Brent Seabrook announces retirement after 15 seasons

I have a feeling that Silovs is going to be an NHL goalie in a few year esp. if he stays under the tutelage of Ian Clarke.
-
Perhaps a bit of both. Either way; I am glad to see him have a positive contribution on the team and hope he can repeat his performance tomorrow against the laughers. Canucks need all the help they can get and everyone pulling in the same direction in order to get back in the playoff hunt.
-
Maybe JB should threaten to trade Jake more often lol. It looks like maybe he is finally getting the message that unless he comes to play hard for every minute he is on the ice; his spot on the team is not a gimmie.
-
The motto of a fighter: ya win some ya lose some. They were both tough customers along with a few others around the league.
-
To bad that Pedan just was not skilled enough hockey wise to stick with the Canucks. His pugilistic skill was very good and he could have been a dominant presence on the back end of any NHL team if his skating and positioning had been better. After watching him KO Tinordi while playing in Utica; I liked to refer to him as one punch Pedan lol.

The one thing I think Judd will bring to the table in Minny is a change in focus on what to look for when evaluating young talent for the draft. He is a benefactor of refining his skills under the tutelage of Benning.
-
I'm just as interested in whether there is any up tic in Minnesota's drafting now that he is their director of amateur scouting. Personally, I am not expecting to see any noticeable change in drafting success for either team. Vancouver's drafting will be just fine without him IMO.

I will agree Chatfield is not nearly as far along or as reliable as Tanev but he is still young and a work in progress.

Tanev was back and forth between the AHL and Vancouver for 3 years before staying on full time with the Canucks. He was not gifted with much offensive abilities and was more of a defensive specialist. I see Chatfield in the same mould as Tanev as a defensive specialist but one who has not finished refining his game at the NHL level. Rathbone is not in the same conversation as Chatfield and Tanev. He is far more skilled offensively and looks like he could be more of a blend of Juolevi and Quinn in his development curve. I project he will be a solid two way D man.

Calling Chatfield, a developing prospect, "garbage" says a lot more about you than it does about him. He is not a Rathbone, Quinn or Juolevi type player but more aligned in the Tanev mould. I fully expect that he will continue to refine his game and will be back in the big show at some point going forward.

I agree; JB should not rush into making a deal unless the return is decent. My gut tells me that Jake needs a wake up call and moving him to a different team is probably the only way it might happen. I doubt very much that a different coach will do the trick by itself That being said; there is no need to make a deal right away and certainly not straight across for Danton Heinen. There is no upside, IMO, to the Canucks with that trade.
-
Much prefer Rathman over the previous iterations. Personally I think it is would be very insulting and demeaning to him for the fans to call him the gutter version.
