I certainly don't believe I live in a democracy. I don't get to vote for the person/people that I believe will govern us responsibly. That is decided by the political parties through a pre-selection process and then they are beholden to the donors and lobbyists, many of those being ex-political staffers or politicians themselves. You name a country where the common people hold the political power and can rule, which is the true definition of a democracy. https://freedomhouse.org/report/freedom-world/2021/democracy-under-siege Maybe a couple of the Scandinavian countries come the closest to that ideal.

I despise the actual event of Gallipoli and how it has been mythologised. Young Aussies sent to fulfil a long held British dream of sailing up the dardanelles and taking Istanbul/Constantinople. The officer class ordered the ordinary soldiers to charge into machine gun fire and they were mown down in their thousands. The "diggers" who came back from WW1 told people not to celebrate what they had done. They went looking for honour and glory in the name of king and country-the same country that had sent many of their forebears to Aus for petty crimes-and found misery and death. It was Howard who really "resurrected" Anzac Day. Then just a few years later he was sending young Aussies to die in pointless conflicts in the middle east, where some of them have committed war crimes and crimes against humanity. "May we do as history teaches, die on middle eastern beaches". ThisIsSeriousMum

As I have stated in another thread some flat earthers don't believe Australia exists. Other conspiracy nutjobs think it was/is a made up place by Britian so they could kill a bunch of their criminal's. You know the crims I'm speaking of,the ones who stole a loaf of bread to feed their family.

People think that's a movie. It's really a documentary about life here in Aus.

I shouldn't tell you this however one can live for longish periods of time on Yuca tubers and water of course.

A few years back I watched a series called East to West. It was about the "journey of civilization". Eminently worth watching if one is interested in history. Up until the development of the printing press one could state that scientific ideas flowed more from east to the west. I know this particular scientific method is well after that however the printing press was a huge leap forward for the west and it was not adopted in the east until centuries later.

That's why I titled the thread how innoculations came to the west.

Edward Jenner gets all the recognition for the small pox Innoculation however it was lady Mary Wortley Montague who brought the technique back from Constantinople in the early 1700's https://theconversation.com/lady-mary-wortley-montagu-the-forgotten-immunisation-pioneer-164256 I think we need a timely reminder ATM of the importance of innoculations and vaccines and how simple the process actually is.

We got one here as well. As soon as the lockdown ends I will take my son for a ride on it.

Totally Was listening to a lecture by a guy who debunks conspiracy theories. He stated the obvious, there is no point going in there guns blazing, first listen to the others point of view and then offer your own with some facts to back it up. He talked about going to a flat earth society meeting, there are 2 such organisations, one doesn't believe we exist down here in Australia, was pretty funny stuff. He mingled with them listened and took in what they had to say then actually converted a few back to reality just by being reasonable. Human nature ain't hard to work out. It is the one thing that hasn't changed since the beginning of our species.

Swap Hoglander for Pearson. I believe his offensive potential is greater than Pearson's. I honestly believe Pearson is a better fit on the third line. -

In my misspent youth one of my friends and I jumped a Mazda capella RX 2 the 2 cylinder rotary,on a similar style jump just not as big. It exploded on impact. We were wearing all our MX gear and we were off our heads so we walked/crawled away in kinda one piece. Those Rotary's really go. Rev em to hell and gone. Happy days. -

More to the point where is your proof that the Bible isn't a work of fiction ? The Bible is used in court out if social inertia. You are offered 2 forms of "swearing" the evidence you provide is the truth in the Australian court system,an oath and an affirmation. The military founded on the Bible ? More reason to despise it. People were killing each other long before the Bible came along, this just increased the reasons for killing and the amount of killing that has been done.

You shouldn't hate anything apart from injustice mate. And that is in a philosophical context. Hate is such a pointless emotion that just damages the person feeling it.

The Abrahamic God is the one most followers of religious beliefs, believe in. You say potato,I say potato I say tomato, you say tomato Let's call the whole thing off.

No slaves were slaves mate. They were not paid wages or allowed to return to their families at night. It seems in my own country between 55-70 percent of people believe in the possible existence of a god. Yes it does seem odd to someone who thinks in a rational, logical, reasonable manner that so many people believe in something whose existence cannot be proved.

I don't pretend to understand physics beyond a basic level however there are some physicists whose work I admire. I simply admire the fact they are endeavouring to come up with answers to questions that ATM we do not have answers for. https://www.space.com/amp/what-came-before-big-bang.html
