[Signing] Maple Leafs re-sign Mark Giordano
Ilunga replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I believe it's the history factor as well, original 6 team. I remember my first season- ski- in Canada and buying a book about the history of the game. Bloody good stuff. I totally realised why hockey is a religion in your country. -
[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
Ilunga replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I know Montreal needs a centre, however on pure talent alone do you believe Slavkofsky is the best player in this draft ? The more video I watch of both players, the more I believe he is. -
Thanks my friend, I really needed that. Due to custody arrangements and him getting Covid then his mum, isolation rules, I haven't seen my son in nearly 3 weeks.
-
I think Jiricek dropped a bit in some scouts opinion because of his knee injury. However I am not critisising your opinion. From reading your other hockey related posts on this forum and plus you actually play/ played our sport, I respect your opinion.
-
I would never chuckle at a fellow board member when they state what you have. I take you at your word. It ain't hard to be a property developer, especially when your buddies are tradies and you already have bought a house. Harder for the younger generation for sure. Money means nothing to me. I am far from rich, my parents left me the family farm, however I payed my own way travelling the world, sleeping on couches, washing dishes, getting support from some great companies once I got good at what I do. What's important is I do what I want, when I want. I love what I do, growing flowers and some days that is hard work, physically wise. However I live in paradise and am known as a good person who cares about others,I share my wealth, giving to those less fortunate than myself. I can go to my grave knowing that people respect who I am. Ones Legacy is far more important than money IMO.
-
Those top five are a lock for great players at their position. I do think Nemec will be more defence orientated, which is what a D- man should be, he will chip in points. Would love Jiricek, I think he has the potential to be the complete package.

I am from Melbourne Australia. Bottom line as I stated, an athlete's motivation is either winning or money. As I stated I would play for a million if it meant winning Stanley cups. Here in Melbourne you can negatively gear the house/s you buy. Lots of mum and dad and CHINESE investors making a fortune in the last 20 years. What's stopping a Canadian or American hockey player from doing the same thing ? Then you can buy one of the old quarter acre blocks, knock down the house, put 4- 6 townhouses on it and double your money in less than a year. Once you have millions it's easy to make millions more, I have friends that do this. Anyway as I stated I would rather play for cups/ winning and immortality, being remembered for winning, than for a few lousy extra million.

I too would take Hedman over Tavares any day of the week. I don't get why many Canucks fans think the world is against them. We can't win the lottery, the NHL tell the refs to rig our games, taxes. Good management builds a winning environment, and a winning environment attracts good/ great players who will want to play for a team, and maybe take a bit less to win. Living in Vancouver alone is worth a lot. I have travelled the world skiing, I live on a ten acre farm on the outskirts of Melbourne, surf and bikinis just over an hour from home, ski hill, just under 3 hours. Vancouver is one of the few places I would consider moving to. Both our cities are consistently rated as some of the best places to live in. Vancouver is a selling point to a player IMO.

So you think he will go 8th brother ? I am so torn in regards to my second and fifth picks. I know this is fantasy wise and I am relying on not just the quality of the player but also teams participation in playoffs. You think jersey will probably pick Slavkofsky and he will play with Hughes ? Cooley will probably gone by my fifth and so will Jiricek. If Savoie is still there I will pick him however if he is not I am not sold on Nemec, as a point scorer. I have got some ideas about point scoring D-men for my actual pick which will be mid to late 20's, I am in the playoffs however will probably be out this round.

Like I stated mate, a players motivation is either money or winning. 40 million, 50 million , 60 million who cares you are set for life. Me if I was the best player in the world I would play for a million bucks a year if it meant winning Stanley cups. I would still be set for life and making a living doing something I love. You ask what property taxes have to do with it ? Well you brought up taxes and the best investment I know is property. The player that earns millions can invest in property and what he loses in playing in Canada re taxes he gets back by investing in property then selling it. As I stated Vancouver has the lowest property taxes in North America. And property prices went up nearly 20 per ent last year alone. Do the math. Someone who invests 8 million turns that into nearly 10. I stated that fantasy gives you an idea of what it takes to build a team, especially the 4 major factors, drafting, cap management, trading and talent evaluation. Those things are what real life GM's have to get right to win and it's the same in our league. Like some in this thread I watch hours of video and read $hitloads of scouting reports.

Good post Jan Colorado's top 10 pick in 2015, Mikko Rantanen has been a beauty to. After his first full season in the NHL he has been over a PPG player. I remember drafting him in the CDCGML that year.
-
Mate, Savoie is only an inch shorter than Cooley and has five pounds on him. Not saying your rankings are wrong, we all have our opinions however I don't think his size will be a problem.
-
I have got a fair bit of respect for @hammertime opinion on prospects and digging a bit deeper this article backs up his opinion with facts about arschdeeps game https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/canucks-sign-whl-scoring-leader-surrey-arshdeep-bains All prospects are hard to evaluate, especially undrafted ones, however don't write the kid off yet.

I have addressed this point. I am really sick of hearing about taxes. When you are talking about 60 million dollars for 8 years ? It boils down to does a player want to win ? Or does he play for the money ? Me I used to be the best at what I did, skiing and downhill MTB and I didn't do it for the money. Take a team discount like Stamkos and Hedman have done or be greedy and ask for the big bucks at 22 when he hasn't even proved he can sustain that level ? Give me 10 million and I will turn that into 15 easy in five years, let alone 50. Melbourne property prices rose over 35 percent in the last 3 years alone. Vancouver's property rose nearly 20 percent to Feb, one year and as I have pointed out Vancouver has the lowest property tax in North America. I totally agree that what we need is ELC's, that has been my point. Previous management has mismanaged our cap and drafting. Giving away first round picks, Solid player ELC's and trying to plug holes with the wrong pieces. Demko is a franchise tender and as you state a bargain at his caphit. I was stoked when OEL was acquired, bit disappointed in his first year however he can still and hopefully will pick up his play. This is the prediction for salary cap raise https://www.nhl.com/news/nhl-salary-cap-projections-for-next-season/c-315855100 But remember the players all expect a raise, it's hard to say what that means team wise. You should get into fantasy hockey. While it is fantasy it teaches one the fundamentals of building a winning team, drafting, cap management and trading.

If I had to choose which D- man out of Hedman or Hughes it would be Hedman every day of the week. He is by far the more complete defensman of the 2. It's not even an argument. https://www.nhl.com/news/nhl-top-players-top-20-defensemen/c-319546918 I know it's only one article from 2 years ago however those facts remain the same. Who are you gonna choose , a 6 foot 6inch players who plays all facets of the game at the elite level or a 5 foot 10 inch guy who excels on offense but will never be the true D- man Hedman is. Hughes is a great player don't get me wrong and I am glad he is on our team. I would trade Hughes for an exorbitant return. I would never trade Hedman, he is what you build a Stanley Cup winner around as he has proved. He is just as important as Stamkos or Vasilevskiy to his team's success. A true franchise defender and he will be in the hall of fame. I do hope one day that we can say Hughes has won 3 cups however what do you think the odds of that are ? I would give my left nut for that. Not my right, it's slightly bigger.

He knows how to win for sure. Currently he is coaching in the ducks system a team he played for, so I don't know if he wants to come here. Same story with all players that coach, can they teach their skills, acumen and general hockey knowledge to the current generation. I, like others on this board want our team, not just our defense to play a bit more physical. The new management talks about " sandpaper" Any coach or approach that helps our team in this regard I am behind 100 percent.
-
I know his career is defined by that hit on Lindros however that was a different time. He only received four minor elbowing penalties in his entire career. I consider him to be one of the greatest physical playing defensman of all time. If he can come in and teach our defence to play a physical game like his within the current rules, I would be stoked.

When I took over the Detroit Red wings in the CDCGML this year I had quite a few GM's hassling me for Quinn. I eventually traded him for Alex Turcotte, Cal Foote, Andrew Peeke and what has turned into this year's second pick in the draft. I know Turcotte's career has been derailed a bit by injuries however I still totally believe he will be a solid second line centre. Cal Foote will be a top pairing defenseman, he will score points, not as many as Quinn, however he will be a fair bit Cheaper. I believe Peeke will develop into at least a 30, maybe 40 point - man, he scored 15 points in his first year, this year at 22. I have yet to decide who I pick second. I love Slafkovsky and I think he will probably play next year some time and if the devil's pick him with their second pick and he plays with Hughes ? However I can also pick Cooley or Savoie. Both will be top line centres IMO. From a team building perspective do you believe Hughes or the players I have will contribute more to winning a Stanley Cup ?
-
I like our core as well however this current version of the Canucks will not win us a cup. We don't have the depth of talent pure and simple. Check out capfriendly, see our cap space, who we have signed and for how long. Think about our prospects and how they will develop/ play in the next few years. I put a lot of work into studying drafts, researching players for this draft, and players from the last 20 years worth of NHL drafts. Admittedly this is in regards from a fantasy team perspective however it gives one an insight into how to build a team and also how to spot talent. I love you brother however loving a team and stating I like our core will not win us a cup. Drafting, Cap management and making the right moves will.
-
I started off comparing both teams best d- man and expanded that to to who had the best defense full stop. Defense wins most contact team sports. With all respect can you expand on load up ? What moves would you make this off season for starters ? Who would you draft ? Out of the players we have the potential to draft at 15 this year who do you think is the best fit and can contribute ASAP ?
-
That my point my friend, that core will not win us a cup on its own, and certainly not with the current supporting cast. You have to give to get. Look at Tampa's D that can actually play defense as well as score. Their top Four, Hedman, McDonagh, Sergachev and Cernak cost them a total of cost them just over 21.5 million. They are 31,32, 23,24 respectively. And they have Cal Foote coming up who I believe is going to be a solid top pairing D-Man. Look at our top four Hughes, OEL, Myers and Dermott that cost us a million more and are 22, 30, 32, 25. Which D are you going to take. It's not even a competition. I agree build around the core of younger guys however we won't win a cup next year and paying Miller northwards of 8 million, maybe even 9 in his thirties on the back of a couple of years where he played over a PPG ? Check his career stats they are not those of a consistently top scoring player in the NHL.

I hate losing. I mean I really hate losing. Money means nothing to me, winning means everything. The few times I lost a race or lost a street fight, lost a few more of them l, I would go home, cry, then train my ass off and win the next one. I love ice hockey, it's the only team sport I play. Smashed and getting smashed on the most frictionless substance known to our species is so much fun even as I approach 60. I love the Canucks however this current version will not win a cup. We do not have the defense to win. We do not have the star power on our wings. We do have the depth at centre and Demko is shaping up as one of the best goal tenders in the league. As for Hughes it's not just about numbers it's about a defensman being able to play defense, that is a defensmans job first and foremost and he is not even in the same league as Hedman. None of our defensman are. Like it or not there is a salary cap. You have to build a team around that structure. Management has not managed our cap well. The only way this team will win a cup in the next five years is to trade guys like Miller and OEL maybe Garland, and Boeser, guys we can get a good return for. In return we get back some picks and more importantly prospects that are near or ready to step into the NHL. Those prospects learn their trade for the next 3- 4 years. Then those picks will enter the NHL around the same time and boom we have a contender. If we make the right moves and draft well. I guarantee you this, if we spend 30 mill plus on four players, Hughes, Miller, Petersson and Horvat, in the next four years, we do not have the supporting cast to win a cup, talent and cap space wise.
