  1. Yeeessss We have a new government. It's looking like the cross benchers will hold the power. Aussies are sick of the 2 major parties. Hopefully they will keep the bastards honest. We are not going down this path
  2. Alright then even a dumbass farmer like me here in Aus knows that the property tax rate in Vancouver is the lowest in North America. So what would I do if I was a hockey player earning millions in Vancouver ? Maybe invest in property ? A clever accountant will turn millions into millions more. Apples are Apples. I am sick of hearing the excuses made that taxes are less or blah blah blah. The fact of the matter is we don't draft as well as other teams and we do not manage our cap as well.
  3. Early days but things are looking good. Hopefully it's the end of nut jobs reign. He was never a king however I feel this is just like when we dumped Howard after his ten years So...... And yes I am dancing
  4. We can afford to do that next year however the year after those 3 guys will probably be taking up over a quarter of our cap space. We don't have quality prospects coming through that will be on ELC's to balance them out. Cup winning teams are built through drafting https://puckprose.com/2021/07/20/nhl-draft-teams-best-draft-pick-time/ While Jim has drafted decently players like Hughes and Petersson, they aren't giving us those few years on cheaper contracts to help build a contender. While I appreciate what Hughes brings to our team he gets the same amount $7,850,000 AAV as Hedman ? Both have 6 years left on their contract. Hedman is a true franchise D- man, his defensive game is just as good as his offensive game, a complete D- man. He scored 85 points in 82 games this year. Hughes scored 68 points in 76. He is nowhere near the defenseman Hedman is. And before anyone brings age into the discussion Lidstrom won the first of his Norris Trophies at Victors age. If anyone reminds me of Nik it's Victor and he has already won one. That however is not my point. My point is using cap space and the draft wisely. The real contenders are masters of this, we not so much.
  5. Bloody good series that- light bringer. Brent also wrote The Night Angel Triology Solid fantasy. Just finished reading Alistair Reynolds trio of books, Revelation Space, Redemption Ark and Absolution Gap. I have nearly finished his fourth book in that " world" Chasm City. Got a few to choose from Next. Maybe David Brin's Uplift series or Peter.F.Hamiltons Void Trilogy. Loved his Nights Dawn Trilogy. Best space opera I have ever read.
  6. That is a Steven Weinberg quote that is BS. What about a atheist drug addict that hurts others while under the influence of drugs. What about soldiers that commit war crimes, then state they were just following orders. Poverty can drive people to do what we could consider evil things.
  7. Being nice to people and treating them with respect is exactly how I want them treat to me, ergo so treat others the way I expect to be treated. Who doesn't wanted to be treated kindly and with respect. So what if they want something different, that doesn't mean you should not treat them with kindness and respect. And if people #$#$ with you it's even more important to treat them nicely and with respect. That's being true to yourself and that is the only real thing one can take to the grave. You wouldn't believe what I have been through in the last five years in regards to my ex and custody of my son. Even though she has treated me in a way that she, or anyone for that matter, would want to be treated, I still treat her with kindness and respect. That's being true to myself and doing the right, simply because it's the right thing to do. As for killing someone, as I have stated you have just rationalised it. Thats what human beings do. Before you state would I kill someone in defense of someone I love, no I would not. I have trained myself to be able to defend myself and those I love so I can defend them without having to kill the person/s who might try to hurt them. If I lived where a war started I would get myself and my loved ones away from that area. Nothing is worth killing or dying for.
  8. Another first that confirms theoretical research. https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/x-ray-explosion-of-a-white-dwarf-star-captured-for-the-first-time/
  9. We rationalise that killing people in wars is acceptable. That's why our species continues to kill each other for no rational purpose. If there is a golden rule ethically wise it is, treat others the way you wish to be treated. It boils down to you don't want to be ##$#$# with so don't ##$#$# with others. I posted an article earlier in this thread which details how morality Evolved long before religion began. https://centerforinquiry.org/blog/morality_evolved_first_long_before_religion/
  10. As you know it's the code I live my life by.
  11. So you are the arbiter ? You decide that whatever society at whatever time decides what's right or wrong ? That there is no consistent set of values/ ethics that are timeless across all human societies ? We are all humans, why shouldn't we share the same set of values ? You say Canada's society has been trending in the right direction, what direction is that ? Thats your opinion, others don't feel the same. Are your set of values/ ethics those we all should live by ? If so why ? Why not mine ? Why not some or else who has a completely different set of values ? I am not claiming you are wrong just making my point. There is no correct answer to the question I posed.
  12. "We may not be the young ones for very long !" Makes me think of playing this next song flat out when I was a teenager telling my parents that ....
  13. This is an interesting article which discusses when our species achieved consiousness and the benefits this gave our species https://science.thewire.in/culture/books/evolution-human-intelligence-consciousness-social-order-brain-size/ I firmly believe that our distant ancestors developed social constructs in order to maintain relationships ships in their particular group. As the article above suggests, religion/ mythology began when our hominids started to fear death. So it is reasonably clear what we now define as ethics/ morality existed long before Religion/ mythology. I am not stating non religious people cannot comment on religion. I am non religious. I wish they would bring more to the discussion than just bashing religion.
  14. Please translate this for this particular ignorant sod- me
  15. Did you read the article I posted in reply to JM ? Ethics and morality existed long before modern forms of religion. They are constructs that enable us to coexist in a somewhat peaceful manner. These constructs seem to work in communities that consist of small numbers of people, however they seem to break down as the number of people reaches shall we say a " national " level, therefore defining us as " something " different from people from " another nation ". Then there is the Dunbar number I will let Robin himself explain this https://theconversation.com/amp/dunbars-number-why-my-theory-that-humans-can-only-maintain-150-friendships-has-withstood-30-years-of-scrutiny-160676 I really don't understand why people I know are not religious, bring religion into this conversation and contribute nothing else.
  16. But do numbers really exist ? Are they not just abstract objects ? Edit in regards to your edit. I don't think your thoughts can be flawed in regards to these questions. These questions have no real answers, or rather answers we have yet to find.
  17. Thanks for the post Jan It makes me think about this subject from anither angle.
  18. Thanks for posting. I have heard of Derek however I am not very conversant with his work. I will have to research his work. To quote a hero of mine " The great thing about being human is our ability to reason But reason it don't work when no one cares 2 parts apathy one part despair " Those few lines kinda sum up how I believe many people feel about the problems our species currently face.
  19. I used to invite them in and give them as much intense Dave as I could. It usually only took about 10 minutes then they were wanting to go.
  20. No offence however you haven't really given me an answer. The only social media I use is this forum. I get my knowledge from books. From research/ scholarly papers on the web. I use my BS detectors. The three basic BS detectors are, who is the person informing me, what is their history, what is their motivation for disseminating the information. However none of this addressess who or what defines what is ultimately right or wrong, or what right and wrong actually are.
  21. Why do you make this about religion ? As the title of this article states Morality Evolved first, long before Religion. https://centerforinquiry.org/blog/morality_evolved_first_long_before_religion/
  22. Now you are touching on another question that I have asked myself since my teens, what " makes" each of us the person that we are. Is it nature ? Is it nurture ? 0ver 40 years of research have lead me to believe that it is a combination of both these things and also how our brains are wired, the neural connections between the different parts of the brain. I watched a doco where a researcher took 250 of the worst pyschopath's in American jail's and used an MRI machine to scan their brains. He then scanned the brains of 250 people who devoted their lives to helping others, what I would define as kind people. Even a layman like myself could see the difference in the images. The neural pathways to the prefrontal cortex- the part of the brain that is connected with empathy and compassion- were nearly non existent in the pyschopath's brains. In the kind peoples brains the neural pathways were strong. Our lives and our characters are shaped by events we have control over and some that we don't.
