Jim Benning's mid-season press conference
Devron replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
Yeah I’m bummed about Joulevi not playing too. I want to know the facts. Is there a minimum games played for expansion. protection purposes or not. Or does he have to be protected regardless? As well it would be nice to know if some of it is due to protecting him a bit this year cause of all the injuries he’s had. I have no clarity on this one. Also it doesn’t hurt for Benn to be playing so teams take notice if we do move him. But I’d rather just see OJ play. Hamonic is playing well now. Maybe he fits for a 1 year extension need a righty still -

He’s not going to say that even if it was true. At the end of the day Greens contract it up at the end of the year. He’s not going to say hey guys I think we are going to make some changes when it’s mid season. Anyone on the team can watch these pressers. I guess people were just expecting to feel better about things after this? Haha I don’t know why anyone cares. Literally changes need to be made in off-season. What is the point of rocking the boat. Canucks have a very slim chance here to make the playoffs but a chance nevertheless -

I mean we are still trying to win with the players we have/had. Markstrom was a no brainer to me, why would you move him when you have a chance at playoffs which was a great experience for the young players btw. He was also good for Demko. In a perfect world you would have kept Marky one more year but it doesn’t work that way. We would still be in the same spot right now if he did trade those players away. None of the return would be ready to play right now. I don’t know man I think people read too much into an interview. Losing those players was partly due to covid and that’s a fact. We also wouldn’t have traded for Toffoli if the nhl shutdown before the deadline. Sometimes things change. People are jumping the gun a bit here but I totally get that the message has changed a couple time over the course of his tenure. Part of that is on the owners not just JB -

He wouldn’t say he wasn’t going to resign him. He’d be showing all is cards and that wouldn’t be good for the players. I personally like Pearson but I think you gotta talk to agent and see if there’s a deal that makes sense. If not and the Canucks are out then ya you gotta move him -

Yeah I wish they would have done the same regarding rebuilding with the Sedins. But over the past 3 or 4 years I really liked what he’s done. Everyone complains about the contracts etc but it’s bought time for our young players. I can see guys like Lind or Gadjovich ready for the NHL next year. Where it would have hurt their development without these guys as they weren’t ready to compete in the nhl and would probably have been thrown in. Maybe fans would have been happier with cheaper plugs but it wouldn’t have changed much and everyone could still complain. Literally all theses guys come off the books like a calendar year from now. I would have expected a few more wins this year but it’s kinda like whatever for me. Bigger better years are coming. I was never big into interviews. I only read the tweets. A GM can’t give away everything anyway. I guess people are confused about the Toffoli trade as far as direction goes. Maybe it’s just a gift for the fans at that time after some tough years and Boeser was injured. Then Covid snowballed everything -

I’m not on the same wave. I like what he’s done the last 3-4 years outside some contracts that are a million too high and a year too long. I kinda wish covid happened before the trade deadline or even better not at all and nobody would be saying anything about Toffoli. Last off-season was cap management to certain degree. We made a push last year and I’m fine with that -

Are you arguing about trying to protect 2 goalies and or sending away prospects and picks to keep them both. On what planet does that make sense to do -

Interesting prospect. If I was Columbus I’d hold onto him. Too early to trade unless they are down with him thriving on another team, I’m down -

Struggled he hasn’t even played 30 games in the AHL? It would cost to bring him in. Why would Columbus just give up on him. He’s a rookie. Be like the Canucks trading Joulevi away. -

Peteys 22 and Hughes is 21? We literally have like 40 million off the books over the next 15 months. Yeah I know we have to resign some guys too but to say we are wasting these years when some of these guys are in the early stages or their development is nuts. Heck even Horvat is a couple years from being truly in his prime
