  1. I've long said Baumer needs to go. He's overseen the defence for a long time now and has had a lot of players come through the gates and nothing has changed. The D has been bad during his tenure but it hasn't been THAT bad - or I should say it shouldn't have been that bad. Bring back Kevin McCarthy. Nashville knows what they're doing with their back end and he's a big part of it. Some of you may remember he spent 6 seasons playing in Vancouver, and was Captain for 2 or 3 of them. He also was one of the highest scoring defenceman we've ever had with a ppg average just barely behind Jovanovski (0.57 vs 0.59) Kevin McCarthy One of the greatest Vancouver Dmen of all time 1981 All Star (53 points in 80 games that year) (his intro at 4:41.... and immediately following, Tiger comes out and sticks his tongue out at the camera lol)
  2. With respect, It's not misinformation because I'm simply trying to understand how the machine works. And I've asked for info to help in that regard. do you have some links to the info you've posted, because I'd love to dig into that too (no, i'm not interested in your jock!)
  3. So going back to Boeser, et al.... then the actual problem becomes a 13% tax difference on top of the exchange rate which is currently at 1.32 $9.24M CDN (assuming he gets 7US) in Canada base pay = roughly $4.6M vs $5.2M he'd make on average in the States. $600K might not seem like a lot I suppose but it adds up every year. That's an extra $2.4M he could make over the length of a 4 year deal in the US vs Canada. Not chump change!
  4. Can you link to that info please. I'd like to have a look at it.
  5. Interesting that the 2 expansion teams in recent history have been placed in 2 of the 7 states with 0% income tax.... Bettman's nudge for success?
  6. thank you!.... I see that now. Fed rates vary from 10-37% I was honestly freaking out a little bit Still, this makes Tampa, Florida, Vegas, Dallas, and soon Seattle, with 0% income tax, look pretty darn sweet to anyone with an NHL pedigree.
  7. The Romans got so much right.... until they got so much wrong....
  8. Most states have a tiered system. Some have a flat rate. Some are at 0%. As stated, I listed the maximum tax rate for each state (top tier) California tops the list at 13% That's still WAY below 50. If anyone has any info about the american tax system and I'm incorrect please chime in. sure teams can still be relatively competitive now, but that's only thanks to the Cap. The Cap goes up every year... you have to think, at some point, it will just price itself out of Canada? Ironic... because it was implemented to prevent exactly that.
  9. Taxes. Tax on taxes. Taxed taxes on tax. Welcome to Canada! In the 1992-93 Season, the Montreal Canadiens defeated the LA Kings in 5 games to win the last Stanley Cup Canada has seen. Average NHL salary in 1993 = $570,000 USD Average NHL salary in 2018 = $4,000,000 USD I had a look at the tax rates in Canada (see link below), and when making the amount of money we're seeing by even "average" players, the total tax rate, Fed + Prov, seems to hover around 50%, regardless which Province you play in. Think about how high that number is for a second........ Now add in escrow fees that are set aside (15% last season), plus agent fees (4-10%), and you wonder how these guys are making any money at all playing in Canada. Let's have a look at maximum tax rates in the US: Alabama 5.0% Alaska None Arizona 4.54% Arkansas 6.9% California 13.3% Colorado 4.63% Connecticut 6.99% Delaware 6.6% Florida None Georgia 5.8% Hawaii 11.00% Idaho 6.93% Illinois 4.95% Indiana 3.23% Iowa 8.98% Kansas 5.7% Kentucky 6.0% Maine 7.15% Maryland 5.75% Massachusetts 5.10% Michigan 4.25% Minnesota 9.85% Mississippi 5.0% Missouri 5.90% Montana 6.9% Nebraska 6.84% Nevada None New Hampshire 5.0% New Jersey 10.75% New Mexico 4.9% New York 8.82% North Carolina 5.25% North Dakota 2.90% Ohio 4.997% Oklahoma 5.00% Oregon 9.9% Pennsylvania 3.07% Rhode Island 5.99 South Carolina 7.0% South Dakota None Tennessee 2.0% Texas None Utah 4.95% Vermont 8.95% Virginia 5.75% Washington None West Virginia 6.5% Wisconsin 7.65% Wyoming None District of Columbia 8.95% And Bettman's running his mouth about "parity" ? Not only are american tax rates not even close to what we have in Canada, but 7 states have ZERO tax. Add to that ever player in Canada must be paid in USD on top of that all, and we have, what exactly??? How can ANY team in Canada compete with that? I don't care how much money you have (hi Toronto), that is just not sustainable long term. Are we looking at a future where there are no more NHL teams in Canada? Teams only make the real money in the playoffs when they players don't get paid, but you have to shell out big $ just to get into the playoffs. Wheels on the bus go round n round.... I was looking at this because of the recent talk about Boeser's camp looking at $9.24M per ($7M USD) 50% goes straight to the Province and the Feds. Now you're down to $4.6M Average 7% to agent. Now you're down to $4.27M Escrow was at 15% withheld last year. Now you're down to $3.63M And that's a top end player. Imagine how hard that hits a guy like Tyler Motte, making $925,000? Dude probably rents an outhouse in a Fraser Valley raspberry field and commutes to games in a rusted out old berry bus. If I'm wrong about any of this please chime in because looking at it the way I am, I don't honestly see how any teams in Canada can sustain any kind of winning culture and survive. Tell me I'm wrong, please! CDN tax link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Income_taxes_in_Canada USA tax link: https://www.money-zine.com/financial-planning/tax-shelter/state-income-tax-rates/
  10. Also, $7M USD is almost $10M Canadian, and in BC, 50% of that goes down the crapper in taxes. Now take off escrow fees and agent fees, plus the cost of living in Vancouver.... .... you can bet Ben Hankinson mentioned all this to Brock, plus the fact that his dad's sick and Minnesota only has a 9% max income tax. https://neuvoo.ca/tax-calculator/?iam=&uet_calculate=calculate&salary=9240000&from=year&region=British+Columbia And people wonder why Canada hasn't sniffed a Cup (other than the one covering your junk) since 1993. Some interesting notes on that page. $9.2M CDN per year = $4,700 an hour. Beats serving fries, eh
  11. If that's the plan (and the rumor of his agent asking for $7M per) are true, then we can expect him to likely be traded as an RFA after 4 years. A back loaded contract will likely mean a huge qualifying offer. (probably over $10M per) We're talking USD here remember..... At 26/27 he'll still be within his peak window meaning we could really get the riches for him. Then you add to that Podkolzin and Hoglander - both of which I see as legit NHL forwards within 2 years, and it doesn't look so bad. This is what happens when you crap away your star players ELC years. Horvat is a veteran already and hasn't sniffed a thing other than his jock strap!
  12. Is his blood still on it from when he used it to try and turn Tryamkin into Pronger and Tryamkin smashed his face into it? "u mean i do like dis?....... Nikita take ur cayk now jes?"
  13. That's just water retention. Happens once every month.
  14. I guess "If you have it, flaunt it" If the Canucks Management were that significant, they'd post more than a few high res images of 2 or 3 guys that actually do anything for the Canucks. (I'm not counting Utica/Johnson) You've got Benning/Weisbrod/Smyl as our "axis of evil" lol, then some guy who's your #4. Nobody's ever heard of him. His job title is "general counsel" (backup covfefe boy when smyl takes a sick day) Is this some kind of media ploy to make the front office look more "unified" or "strong/tight"? I don't really care one way or the other, so long as they get it done. Just having some fun with it, as it has been mentioned that Vancouver is really shy to most teams when it comes to management staff. Talk lately of Gillis making a comeback in more scientific role has brought those topics back around. And while I'm mentioning Gillis, love him or hate him, the guy was on the cutting edge of new ideas and methods to make our team better - and he did. I say if we can get him back here and let him turn all of our players into the Six Million Dollar Man (except Erik$$on), then I'm all for it.
  15. This. Both Miller and Ferland bring the grits and can provide secondary offence - both things that Jake absolutely must bring into his game if he wants an NHL career. Hopefully those 2 guys lead the way and Jake has a breakout year. I think after what happened at the World Juniors and then that huge hit on Polak he got suspended for, he was talked to by the team and told "get your head straight" and I think maybe he's had some trouble with that because being physical was a huge part of his game, and it seems he's still figuring out where the line is. With Ferland and Miller around him now, I think that line will become a lot clearer to him. #crossesfingers
  16. Any game where Messy-yay gets creamed is the best ever game. Doesn't even matter if it was a Canucks game. Every time that guy got wiped out was a reason to raise your glass and cheer. One of THE dirtiest players of all time, who had zero problems elbowing and kneeing you when you were already down. If that turd started his career in the current NHL, he wouldn't make it through one season before being banned from playing hockey anywhere in the world ever again. "Best Leader" my ass, that guy's no leader. He's Matt Cooke, Marchand, and Jordin Tootoo rolled into one. A true PIECE OF GARBAGE.
  17. Never ever ever gets old Tryank swatting 230lb flies..... "Hello Matheson. I now must break you"
  18. Time will tell if the "minimalist" approach works. The Canucks "front office", is really just a big desk with a couple of laptops, a phone, and a blackboard. It's Benning and Weisbrod, with Stan Smyl on speed dial if they run out of coffee. That's really it. Compare the Canucks management staff, with say, Tampa Bay..... https://www.nhl.com/canucks/team/coaches-and-staff https://www.nhl.com/lightning/team/front-office
  19. Colorado got in with 90 points last year which was 9 points (or 4-0-1) better than us. The thing I'm looking at is goal differential, not wins or points. Colorado was a +14 over the year while we were -29. Can the Canucks collectively score 43 more goals than last year? Ferland and Miller should hit 20-ish, so there's 40. A slight bump (hopefully) from Peety Brock and Bo if they stay healthy, plus (FINALLY) a real offensive defensive presence in Hughes. I'm being pretty simplistic here but I think offensively the numbers will pan out. Add to that a better defence and Clark's influence on Marky starting to pay off.... it could happen. Not saying it will 100%, but to those out there who think this team is still miles away, I'll say this:
  20. Thanks. Yeah I think maybe it's the away jersey that bugs me so much because of all that white space ... it just makes the logo look tiny, ergo, unintimidating.
