Who cares if Hoglander can or cannot score a lacrosse-style goal in the NHL? Nobody's winning the Art Ross by potting 50 of those. We're talking about a move that might work once every other season. It has no bearing on anything. The point is that he had the presence of mind to bypass the defenseman by using the back of the net to pass to himself, and the stickhandling skills to grab the puck and tuck it in on the far side. The creativity and puck control that he showed is what's promising. Those are attributes that could make him a 30 goal scorer in the NHL. This is why we can't have nice things. A prospect scores a pretty goal and suddenly he's going to lose his teeth the next time he tries it.

Virtanen reminds me a bit of Brett Connolly. Also a sixth overall pick, touted as a scoring power forward, rushed into the NHL at 19 when he probably should've went back to the Dub another year. Sent down to the AHL at 20 once he was eligible, didn't establish himself as a full time NHLer until he was 22. Broke out last year with the Caps and is now on pace for a 60+ point season with the Panthers at age 27. Virtanen just turned 23 two months ago. Even then, was Connolly the best pick at No. 6? No, not when Skinner went one pick after at No. 7, and Schwarz, Tarasenko and Kuznetsov were still on the board. Similarly, Virtanen would never go top 10 in a redraft, but neither would Bennett, Dal Colle, Fleury or Ritchie. Through no fault of his own, he's been a victim of high expectations. A B.C. boy who plays a heavy game, people were hoping for Cam Neely, not Raffi Torres. Fans want a home run every year but sometimes all you get is a guy who can play. And that's what Virtanen is. He's not Ehlers or Pastrnak but he's a solid player. Benning didn't win the draft in 2014, just like Yzerman didn't win the draft in 2010, but he still got the Canucks a useful piece that can contribute to a winning team. People who poop on Virtanen because he's not better than every single guy drafted after him are being unreasonable. You would literally have to be God to pick the absolute best player every time you're at the draft table.

Pleasantly surprised at how quickly DiPietro adjusted to the pros, considering questions about his size and raw, acrobatic style. Demko played three years of college hockey against older competition and was 3.71 GAA, 0.869 SV% in his first three games. Granted DP is playing in front of a better team, but Demko was the consensus #1 goalie from his draft and due to his late birthday, 6 months older than DP when he started in the AHL. DP's 1.62 GAA and 0.940 SV% puts him 6th and 8th in the AHL, respectively.

Madden played with fellow Canucks draftee Aidan McDonough as Northeastern beat St. Cloud State 4-1. Madden had 2 goals, 5 shots, and 8/13 on faceoffs. He's now up to 4 goals in 5 games on the season.
