  1. Interesting thought about injuries. The top five teams, in terms of man games lost this year, were Anaheim (428 games), Dallas (406 games), Arizona (388 games), New Jersey (362 games) and Vancouver (319 games). While the bottom five teams were Columbus (90 games), San Jose (101 games), Washington (104 games), Toronto (118 games) and Tampa Bay (122 games). Comparing the two groups, the most injured teams certainly spends more games chasing from behind, instead of building on a lead, compared to the least injured teams.
  2. The clearest sign of better times ahead: No Gagner in the top six, no AHLers like Jokinen and Archibald in the lineup, and most of all, no Pouliot in the top four (or at all).
  3. How lucky are we, to get Petey just as the Sedins retired?
  4. A good night for the young guns. Gadjovich with a goal, Jasek with an assist, and MacEwen with an (empty net) goal and an assist.
  5. Hughes got 21:42 TOI and 2:10 PP time in the season finale, compared to 15:36 TOI and no PP time in his debut just four games ago. His skating and breakouts are sublime, but it's the way he's handled the increasing responsibility each game that impresses me the most. What distinguishes a good prospect from a great one is their development curve -- look at the improvement that Petey made from his draft year to D+1, then to the NHL. Excited to see what Hughes will look like after a full summer of training and another go at World's.
  6. People are responding because making mountains out of molehills seems to be a full time sport for some. Can you name one example where a club loses a player because they burned off a year of waiver exemption, then the said player went on to become an impact player for his next team? If there isn't a single instance then why is this even a discussion? You used Rafferty/ Teves as an example of Benning giving away the store. Now you're saying that move isn't a big deal, but maybe these other ones are? How convenient is it to forget that Burrows, Bieksa and Hansen waived their NTC, or that Benning got Granlund for Shinkaruk, Pearson for Gudbranson, Leivo for Carcone, and Baertschi for a second, or that Horvat is signed for $5.5m a year until 2023. What about McPhee trading a 18 year old Forsberg for a 32 year old Erat, or Treliving signing Neal to $5.75m x 5 years, or Yzerman re-signing Callahan to $5.8m x 6 years (with a NMC, no less). It's a minor miracle that these guys ever got a job in the NHL. Please illustrate the actual impact on the Canucks based on where in the AHL Gagner plays. If it makes no difference then it's another moot point. He was available for call-ups whenever needed. Benning's job is to consider the effect each move will have on the Canucks. And unless you're privy to what other offers Beagle had on the table, how do you know what was needed to get him signed? He's the only reason that Horvat doesn't have to take every single D zone faceoff right now. Without him, the other options would be Pettersson, Gaudette and... Granlund. No, thank you.
  7. Looks like Woo will go home and rest his injury. Hopefully it’s nothing serious and he gets a full summer of training.
  8. An update on the sleeper pick. Utunen is now playing in the second round of Liiga playoffs. Per Ryan Biech: He has 3pts in 43 regular season games, and so far no points in 5 playoff games. Though he's still 18 years old for a few more weeks. A scouting report from a Finnish fan on HFBoards: Seems like an Anton Stralman type if he ever reaches his ceiling. Stralman at the same age had 18pts in 41 games in the Allsvenskan, but the next year he had 5pts in 45 games when he moved up to the SHL. He played a second year in the SHL before making the jump to North America. Utunen could be on a similar timeline, another couple years in the Liiga before he comes over to the farm team.
  9. HPK knocked Palmu's (and Kakko's) TPS out of the first round in five games. Final stats for Palmu: Regular season: 29GP - 4G - 18pts Playoffs: 4GP - 0G - 0pts His rookie year with TPS: Regular season: 59GP - 17G - 36pts Playoffs: 11GP - 4G - 6pts
  10. Brady Keeper played one game for Florida, burning a year off of his waiver exemption. Nico Sturm played one game for Minnesota, burning a year off of his waiver exemption. Blake Lizotte and Jimmy Schuldt are set to make their NHL debuts tonight in the last regular season game for L.A. and Las Vegas, burning a year off of their waiver exemptions. Taro Hirose, Ryan Kuffner, and Max Veronneau all played "meaningless games" for clear non-playoff teams (Detroit and Ottawa), burning a year off of their waiver exemptions. And that's only what I can recall from this year. I guess there are just tons of bad sales rep that make procurement managers salivate around the league. Can you name one player, who was put on waivers because a team unnecessarily burned a year off of his waiver exemption, then went on to become an impact player for his next NHL team? Why should Benning, or anybody else, care about the Frankie Corrados of the league? How has his loss impacted Vancouver long term, and what difference did he make in Toronto and Pittsburgh?
  11. Hope MacEwen takes another step this summer and make the big team out of training camp! The guy’s got guts.
  12. I probably should've been clearer, I agree that signing college free agents is more worthwhile than hoping some career journeyman can fill a hole. I meant more in terms of the hoopla over waiver exemption, burning a year off makes little difference when the prospect is already 24 years old. If they can't make the roster by the time they're waiver eligible, then let whichever team that wants a 26 year old AHLer take them. On the other hand, if they surprise and become solid NHLers, then they won't end up on waivers anyway.
  13. Petey has been perfecting this move for years:
  14. The way I see it, there are three possibilities for guys like Rafferty/ Teves: - They blow the door off next season like Hutton/ Stecher. Therefore they will not be on waivers two years from now. - They develop more into a Sautner or a Biega. Guys like them pass through waivers every year. - They develop into career AHLers. Please do not re-sign. The only reason Corrado was picked up off waivers was because he was 22 years old. There was a perceived upside because he was young. He's now 26 and has no trouble passing through waivers. Rafferty/ Teves are 24 years old. In a couple years, if they still can't crack it as a 7th/8th D, do we even care what happens to them? Borderline NHLers who get called up 10-20 games a year are a dime a dozen. Exactly what has Corrado done for any team? Players like that are inconsequential. Take two Corrados from Tampa and add them to Vancouver and you'll still see the same results.
  15. Would be great to get him a few more games!

  20. As expected, Madden is going back to college next year:
  21. The problem with Desjardins is that it's a teacher's job to teach, it's a student's job to learn. Even when the student isn't taking it all in, it's still the teacher's job to teach. You can't just walk out the door and put on a movie because your students aren't doing what you want. For example: Unless Desjardins has secret telepathic abilities, what was he teaching? Virtanen didn't even know why he was being sent down or called up. Now, some of what happened with Virtanen/ Tryamkin/ Kovalchuk are absolutely on them. There's a common theme here -- they're all flawed characters. But you're never going to get 23 Bo Horvats on your team. I can coach Bo Horvat. A young Ovechkin and a young Doughty were a handful to deal with. They were not model citizens who came in and did all the little things and worked hard in all three zones. That's why their coaches got paid seven figures while I dole out my opinion for free on an internet forum. If a player isn't doing everything asked of him consistently, the solution isn't just bench him and call it a day. Tryamkin seemed surprised that Desjardins said he could be a top pairing D if he played a certain way. Now, if you frame the ice time discussion as -- if you keep doing X and limit doing Y, you'll see your ice time go up -- then the player may be willing to stick it out because they know they can work towards more TOI. But if you frame it more like -- you don't deserve the time yet and I don't really trust you so you're just going to have to wait -- that's an entirely different feeling. Desjardins gets so stuck on doing things a certain way that some of his decisions were simply nonsensical.
