With the D that we have on our roster and in our system I would much rather have a long term plan for the future then a short term plan for the now. It’s not likely the 5th becomes anything but you are absolutely correct. This team needs picks, we are more of a pretender then a contender. I’m all for more picks then trading for placeholder players that will be with the team 1-2 years. It’s been a very long time since this team has had more picks then the allotment 7 it is given every year. While I like the trade because it addresses a position of need right now, I am exhausted at seeing this team bleed picks

This was my biggest take away from this. Not the trade itself but the loud message that’s become clear. This team doesn’t have the stomach to wait things out and develop our own D corps and farm blueline. It’s win now, because we have done so much of that in the last while and we are all convinced that we have the team to win it all. 100% have to tare it all down, something that over 17 years of ownership the man atop has refused to do. At some point the stubbornness will come to roost. No team is immune to a rebuild but the big guy here seems to think his team is. The sooner we change the mandate of this franchise the sooner you, me, @Coconuts among others will finally shut up about it. Until then our skepticism will remain.

Absolutely we have to wait and see. That said and others have voiced their skepticism. With the moves like these over the years, the short term trade as not benefited this franchise. Forsling for Clendenning, a 2nd that turned out to be Ramus Andersson for Bärtchi among other shortcut trades that hasn’t moved the needle at all. Not that this trade moves either teams, it’s the principle that the team isn’t patient enough to allow our own D prospects to develop and graduate onto the team. No question we won’t know who becomes what for years, but the skepticism of have impatience from the top is warranted as we have seen this play out before. On another note, what trade that was focused on the here and now, in the last fifteen years and three different management teams has come out as a win? Miller comes to mind but there aren’t many. That’s where I’m coming from JM. We need to have a long term plan, especially on RD and I can’t see us contending in the here and now. The most likely scenario is that both players are nothing burgers, as you said we will have to wait and see.

It's funny that people on here are saying how he is 5-6 years away and yet you look at our prospect pool on RD and wonder why we don't have many. Is 4-5 years too long for this management/organization to develop Defensemen? The words that stuck out to me in all this is "he is an interesting player but he is 5 years away" so basically don't bother developing Defense because that's how long it usually takes. While sure he could be nothing. It's the principle of not being patient enough to show the fruits of your labor. It takes a long time to get D prospects to make the team. The teams impatience of drafting and developing shows. But what do we know WH, mere mortal fans that are tired of seeing this.

With the lack of RD that the organization has drafted in the last 18 seasons that @Warhippy has well documented, you are probably right about that. A fanbase has needs. We need RD as much as we need air to breath. This team is dead without a revamp in the scouting/draft plan. 18 YEARS of this man! -

And that’s without even talking about Rasmus Andersson (the player is who was the 2nd rounder that we traded to Calgary for Sven Bärtschi) you know the 50 point +30 Right Side D that we have been waiting for… It’s almost a tragic comedy at this point -

Post of the year! Very happy you made this thread. It’s long overdue. With what you said with regards to our competitive timeline it would take to rebuild our defence, without a rebuild our timeline would be all F-ed up. There is no way around it. Thank you WH for this post and all the hard hitting facts that the people running the team MUST come to grips with. -

You are the Preacher in Penticton and I’m all for it. Such a sad reality that the best drafted and developed RD was juice. At some point you would think our scouting for this position has to drastically change no? You have been a very loud advocator of this glaring organizational weakness for awhile. I strongly appreciate it. Somethings got to change it has to. It’s why we are in this mess with no contingency plan on the farm and on the roster. It’s long overdue my friend. -

Amazing and well spoken post! It’s therapeutic to share our inner Canuck thoughts and pain. I didn’t know that about you Spooks, I really appreciate what you have to do to watch the boys play. Always dedicated and bleed blue and green. One day hopefully we can all witness our team win it all because it’s dedication like yours that shines through the darkness. Thanks again for such an awesome reply. Hope you have a solid day Spooks! Cheers!
