(Rumour) 4 teams interested in J.T. Miller
Elias Pettersson replied to combover's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
That is 100% not true. Lindros had several years where he was top 20 in Selke voting. He wasn’t as good as Forsberg defensively but to say he was one dimensional is false. -

Lindros in today’s game would easily be at McDavid’s level. Without Scott Stevens around and other defencemen headhunting you wouldn’t be able to stop Lindros. He would be like Tage Thompson on sterioids. Imagine if Lindros was in the St. Louis Blues lineup tonight. He’d easily get 7-8 points playing against Vancouver. -

Prime Lindros was a top 10 player of all time. Virtually an unstoppable force. Never seen a player that big dominate so easily. Forsberg was never at that level and was sheltered to a degree playing with Sakic. Both players are hall of famers, but prime Lindros was only a notch below Lemieux and Gretzky. -
Part of being a GM is being able to figure out if a guy has the potential to succeed in the NHL. On the one hand you claim that Benning did a great job in drafting Forsling, but then you turn around and say that it was better to trade him for an AHL all-star. Wasn't Brogan Rafferty also an AHL all star? Who cares what a player does in the AHL. It only matters what they do in the NHL. If Benning felt highly of Forsling, he should have just let him develop for a few years, which is what you are supposed to do with 5th rounders. Most don't make it but the ones that do need 3-4 years minimum in the AHL. Like I said, Benning did this several times and most of his trades backfired. He even traded like 12 draft picks to get these ready-made NHL players where most of them flopped. Linden Vey, Sven Baertschi, Madison Bowey, Adam Clendening, Derek Pouliot, Philip Larsen, Erik Gudbranson, Jason Dickinson. These guys turned out to be all garbage and Benning threw away like 12 draft picks for these guys plus Jared McCann. I was one of the bigger Benning supporters on this board for quite awhile, but I changed my mind on that after reviewing everything he did. The OEL/Garland trade was the one that broke me. Benning was a good drafter, not a great one, but a good one. Of course, he was a better drafter than Gillis. But at least Gillis was able to trade for some complimentary players and pick up some free agents that helped us to get to the cup finals. Benning screwed up most of his trades and some of his free agent signings were absolutely horrific. Loui Eriksson, Tyler Myers and Tucker Poolman just to name 3 guys off the top of my head.

Forsling was a great pick, so why did Benning trade him away for nothing? Same with McCann. What's the point in drafting these guys if you don't bother to develop them and keep them? Benning went out and drafted some good players and then turned around and traded them for scraps that turned into nothing. He also traded like 12-14 draft picks for guys who ended up being busts. There is more to being a GM than just drafting players. Throwing those drafted players away and trading half your picks for scraps is the reason he was ultimately fired.

(Rumour) 4 teams interested in J.T. Miller

Your definition of throw in must be different than mine. Throw in meaning he needed to be a part of the deal to make the numbers work, not that he was an actual cap dump. If NYI had the cap space, the Canucks may have gone in a different route and chose to take another prospect instead of Beau. When you say targeted, he was targeted as the player they wanted given the cap they needed to take back. He wasn't necessarily their first choice. Perhaps they take Wahlstrom instead or Bolduc if cap didn't matter. -

Lindros > Forsberg. If it wasn't for the concussions, Lindros would have been in the top 10 players of all time... -

Beau needed to be included to make the cap work, we even needed to retain money to trade BO. However, yes I do agree that they targeted Beau as the guy they wanted back and made it work by retaining money on the deal... -

Lindros was the best player when he was traded. Colorado was the team that won the cups... -

Beau was a throw in in the trade to make the cap work. You would think BO would be outproducing him big time, instead Beau is keeping pace with BO point for point. Plus, on top of that we got their top prospect plus a 1st round pick. At the end of the day, if Beau is getting 50 points, then we win this trade easy if you include the other assets in the trade. It's actually a lopsided trade if Raty turns into a 2C/3C tweener and the 1st round pick is an NHL player... -
[Rumour] Canucks Getting Calls on Luke Schenn

He was also talking about them having to book flights, so could be anywhere. I doubt she would fly anytime in the next couple of weeks, but she probably would be flying out afterwards. Remember, Luke is probably going to a contender, so he may be playing hockey until May or even June... -

I agree. All successful teams build through the draft. That’s where they get their core players from. Even Benning knew this. I don’t know of one example where a team has been successful in building their team by trading like 12-14 draft picks for other team’s misfits. Benning is the only one I can remember who actually went all in and tried this. And of course he failed miserably. At the end of the day, if those 21-23 year old players are actually any good then why would a team trade them away? Makes no sense. The theory behind that is to try and speed up the rebuild to get more ready NHL players into the lineup more quickly than by waiting 3-5 years for those draft picks to develop. In theory, that may be logical. But in practice it never works because those 21-23 year old players that are available in a trade are guys that other teams feel won’t make an impact after trying to develop them for 3-5 years. There is the odd time that you will get lucky. Once in a while a player will develop after age 23 and become a star. Tage Thompson is a perfect example. But those players are rare. You might need to trade 12-14 draft picks before you hit on a Tage Thompson. -

So, who are you talking about then? Is there a specific GM who has traded away 12-14 draft picks over a 5-6 year period for 21-23 year old players and has been successful in rebuilding their team that way? -

Yeah. I hear OEL is on his way to LTIR. I wonder how long he will stay there? Can a sprained ankle linger on for a few years? -

Wasn't the 21-23-year-old originally a draft pick? Or did they arrive from some other place other than the draft? You are basically saying to trade draft picks for guys who have already been drafted and are now 21-23 years old. Those 21–23-year-old guys that are available are normally guys that haven't panned out on another team, so they are now available for trade. You know, the guys you say that will be mostly flops after the 1st round. This is the strategy that Jim Benning followed that went horribly wrong. The worst one being the trading of a 2nd round pick for Sven Baertschi. That 2nd round pick turned out to be Rasmus Andersson, who is a top 2 RHD and would be a perfect partner for Hughes now. Other notable players from Benning's strategic fail plan of trading picks for ready-made NHL'ers are Linden Vey (2nd round pick), Derek Pouliot (4th round pick), Erik Gudbranson (Jared Mccann, a 2nd round pick and a 4th round pick), Philip Larsen (5th round pick), Madison Bowey (4th and a 5th round pick), Jason Dickinson (3rd round pick), Nate Schmidt (3rd round pick), Tyler Toffoli (2nd round pick). The Toffoli trade would have been fine, except for the fact that Benning used Toffoli only as a rental for 3 months and then let him walk. But the absolute worst trade of them all, the horror of all horrors, was OEL and Garland for a 1st round pick (top 10 pick in a draft) and a 2nd round pick. Add it all up and Benning traded one 1st round pick, four 2nd round picks, two 3rd round picks, three 4th round picks, two 5th round picks, PLUS Jared McCann and all we have to show for it are OEL, Garland, Tanner Pearson, Riley Stillman and Elias Pettersson (no not me, the other guy). That's how you completely ruin the prospect pool of a franchise and why our cupboards are bare of talent... -

Yeah, after watching Silovs for a couple of games I think that Clark likes the big rangy guys who can move. Jarry is not like that. Silovs I think is going to be a star, so I wouldn't commit to any goalie long term, including Jarry. I think at this point we can just ride it out with Demko who is on a good contract for 3 more years. By the time Demko is done, Silovs will be ready to go... -
True. But if Arizona's MO is to save money, then why not take on contracts that don't cost any real dollars while getting rid of the ones that do? If Crouse is involved, we obviously would have to give them something other than contracts. If NYI end up with a pick in the 18-20 range this year and we get it, I wouldn't have a problem giving Arizona that pick if they take Myers, Pearson and Poolman off our hands and give us Lawson Crouse.
