(Rumour) 4 teams interested in J.T. Miller
Elias Pettersson replied to combover's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
JR knows what the number is going to be. He knows it isn't going to be $9 or even $10 million. We are talking about locking up our superstar, future captain, who is on pace for over 100 points and may be a Selke nominee next year. Barzal is definitely not the comparable for Petey. His numbers are closer to MacKinnon then they are to Barzal. What did MacKinnon sign for? I think the guy they should have locked up long term is Petey not Hughes. We probably could have had him for the BO contract. Instead, we may need to pay him the MacKinnon contract now... -

Sure, I agree with all of that. The bottom line though is there is risk in every scenario. There is no guarantee that JR/PA will use their newfound cap space wisely. There is no guarantee that those assets we get from flipping other assets will be NHL players. As for Petey, I do agree that money will play a big factor in his decision. But he may also not want to be a part of a rebuild either. He is saying all the right things, but little Johnny said all the right things too. Players can change their minds and their agents play a big part in their decision making. Remember, Petey switched agents and held out of training camp along with Hughes, so the negotiations on that next contract won't be easy. Petey knows he is the face of the franchise now. He isn't dumb. I wouldn't be surprised if J.P. Barry starts the bidding at $12 million... -

In 5 years, Miller will have 2 years left on his contract. The cap will be pushing $100 million. I don't see a scenario where his contract is an issue at all, unless he stops producing. Also, Petey needs to make a decision on his long-term future as early as this summer. If we are dumping Miller and going into full rebuild, he may not want to hang around. That is the risk we take. There is risk in every scenario, whether it's keeping Miller or trading him. -

Crosby is at 1.21 PPG right now. He has turned back the clock and is still one of the best players in the NHL. As for Miller, anything we do with him has risk. Do you think the probability is high that we become a cup contender if he is traded? What if the assets coming back amount to nothing? What if we spend the $8 million on UFA's that turn into Loui Eriksson? Everything has some level of risk to it. Keeping Miller means we know exactly what we have moving forward. Lots of people were eager to sign BO to an 8x8 deal thinking he is less of a risk moving forward then Miller. BO could be a 60-point player next year. Would that have helped us in the rebuild to sign him to an 8x8 contract like some people wanted to do? I'm not saying that keeping Miller is risk free and he will lead us to the promised land. I am open to trading him if it is a hockey trade. However, this notion that we can't move forward with Miller and be a contender with him and he must be traded is a fallacy. There is a scenario where we can keep Miller and he helps us to win a cup. Getting rid of Garland, OEL, Boeser and Myers may not be as difficult as you think. An OEL buyout this summer will solve alot of problems. Waiting until next summer to allow Myers contract to expire is totally fine and only burns one more year with him. Garland and Boeser can be traded, we may need to retain a bit on Boeser, but Garland could be traded next year without retention if he has a good year playing under Tocchet and playing with Miller... -

A guy who is producing at a PPG isn't "hurting" your team. We need to focus on the guys that are. There are several that need to be dealt with. Miller isn't one of them... -

Miller should be productive for the next 4-5 years. He rarely gets injured and has been a consistent PPG guy since he arrived. Our window with Petey is 4-5 years. After that time Petey will be 30 years old and if he hasn't won anything by that time or isn't even close then he may just ride out the last 3-4 years of his deal or demand a trade to a contender. This is similar situation with the Sedins. They hit their prime a little later, around 26, and were good into their early 30's. When we went to the cup in 2011, they were 30 years old. We had several veterans on the team to take us to the cup final. Mikael Samuelsson was a big contributor that year, he was 34. Sami Salo was 36 and played most of the playoff games. Luongo was also a year older than the Sedins. We then had a bunch of younger guys in the mix. Miller can be one of those few veterans that we have around for a cup run in 4-5 years. Of course we need youth as well, so that is why getting Raty and developing Podkolzin, Klimovich, Hoglander, Lekkerimaki and others is important. And that is why this year's pick is so important. Landing a Bedard or Fantilli could push this team over the top in 3-4 years. -

Petey is going to get 100 points this year. He is entering his prime years and needs to make a decision this summer as to whether he will stay with us for another 8 years. Trading Miller for futures probably doesn't help to keep Petey around. Also, I don't get the argument that keeping Miller is wasting Petey's prime years, because Petey will already be entering his prime next season. His prime will probably last between 7-9 years depending on how well he keeps himself in shape. Crosby is 35 and still technically in his prime as he is as good as he was 4 years ago. Crosby is also on pace for 100 points this year. There is a scenario where we can keep Miller and also be competitive in 2 years. What needs to happen is we need to figure out what to do with Boeser, Garland, OEL and Myers. Those are the 4 players that are eating up a large chunk of our cap and are not contributing to their contract levels. Once we figure what to do with those guys, we can move forward WITH Miller. Miller is actually contributing to his contract level and may do so for several more years, so he is the farthest thing from the issue with this team... -

I think it boils down to two things. First one is that some people are still pissed that we kept Miller over BO, so they want Miller gone regardless of what the trade is. That sentiment seems to have died down a bit, but it is still around. Second one is that now that BO is gone, we need to completely gut this team to the ground and trade everyone we can other than Petey and go for the rebuild. Some even want to trade Hughes. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, so that is the discussion we are having in this thread. I am actually open to a Miller trade if it is a hockey trade. Some however want to trade Miller at all costs and cannot even consider the argument of keeping him, which is why this thread is now 111 pages. -

I'm not opposed to trading Miller if it is a hockey trade. I even suggested some trades last year before the deadline. What I am opposed and what makes absolutely no sense is to trade him as a cap dump type deal. Miller for a 3C and a late first plus a Dman that hasn't even signed a contract yet is not a "hockey trade". That is a trade to try and get Miller off the books so we can rebuild with younger players. We are one of the youngest teams in the league. We need at least a couple of veterans to take us to the next level. Miller is one of those veterans. The narrative that he doesn't fit our window for playoff contention also makes no sense. He's not even 30 yet. Lots of guys are productive into their mid 30's. Like I said we need some veteran leadership in the locker room or else we turn into the Arizona Coyotes or the Edmonton Oilers and Buffalo Sabres of past years who are continually rebuilding. If we are offered a top 4 Dman who can play right away and partner Hughes then I would be all ears. I haven't seen any of those trades around though. Most teams are not going to give up a top 4 RHD. They are the most valuable players around, which is why most teams draft their RHD not trade for them. If the Cancuks want to really be serious about rebuilding their defence, then they need to not throw away all of their picks every year. Keep those 2nd rounders so that you have a shot at the next Shea Weber or Duncan Keith... -
BO is Fredo, the most passive one of the family. He is never coming back. He could get whacked if he does. Miller is Sunny, he is the hothead with the temper who will do anything for the family. He needs to be careful as he could get whacked too. Schenn is Vito, the father and protector of the family. Nobody messes with the father. Hughes is Tom Hagen, the consigliere of the family. He is the low key one who will give the family all the legal advice they need. Petey is Michael, the one who will become the new leader of the family. He is the one who is most like his father, cunning, even tempered but quietly ruthless. Everyone will soon be listening to Michael...

[Proposal] Potential Schenn trades
Elias Pettersson replied to Coconuts's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Boston's 1st and our 2nd could only be a difference of 5-6 spots. I'd rather just keep Schenn. Or we could do our 3rd and Schenn for Boston's 1st and Ryan Mast... -

I believe the trade Miller plan is to trade him to Carolina for an overpriced 3C and a late first round pick. As well, we will pick up a Dman who hasn’t even signed a contract yet in the NHL, so he can potentially pull an Adam Fox and walk for nothing. The 3C we are getting has a very favourable buyout friendly contract, so if he busts then we can simply buy him out and keep him on the books for under a million dollars for the next 12 years and then start the process all over again. That’s the plan. Or we could just keep Miller and have him as our 2C and putting up a PPG numbers for the next several years. It’s a tough choice really. -
Raty is a good skater. Not sure where the idea came that he was a terrible skater. As per his draft report: Skating Raty is a good but not great skater. He can get around the ice well enough and keeps up with the play but he is not going to beat opponents purely on his footwork. His first few steps are good, and his acceleration is decent. His top-end speed is also good but does not challenge the best players in the draft. The best aspect of Raty’s skating is his agility and edgework. He has very good lateral movement. This allows him to get by defenders, both on the rush and in the offensive zone. When facing his own age group, he is strong on his skates with the ability to battle through checks and keep going. He also wins battles on the boards and in front of the net. However, he must get stronger to face men. https://lastwordonsports.com/hockey/2021/05/18/aatu-raty-scouting-report/amp/

If we are at 5 and the Islanders pick is 8-10, then yes we may have a good shot at moving up to 3. I think Bedard and Fantilli are untouchable at 1 and 2. But Carlsson may be a notch below Fantilli, so 2 top 10 picks might be able to get the 3 pick, depending which team has that pick. Arizona for example might take the two picks for 3.

I'm pretty sure Barzal blew out his knee. They couldn't make that call so quickly that he is out indefinitely. It's like Mikheyev, it was leaked he blew out his knee right away, but then he continued to play as the ACL wasn't fully torn. I think Barzal has a torn ACL. If that is the case, not only is he done for the year, but he may miss a part of next year as well. As long as the Islanders don't get one of the top 2 picks from the lottery, I think they will give us their 2023 pick, which could be as low as 8 or 9 now that Barzal is done for the year.

Aatu Raty had 40 points in 41 games as a 19 year old playing in the top league in Finland against men. In comparison, Roope Hintz had 20 points in 33 games as a 19 year old playing in Finland. Roope was also a 2nd round pick from Finland. Roope Hintz also played one more year in Finland and had 30 points in 44 games as a 20 year old. As a 21 year old, Roope Hintz had 35 points in 70 games in the AHL. That’s worse than what Räty was doing this year as a 20 year old when he played with the Islanders AHL team. At 22, Roope played both in the AHL and the NHL. He was a PPG in the AHL. At 23, Roope finally made the NHL full time. At 26, he is now regarded as one of the top two way centres in the NHL. The odds are never great that a 2nd round pick can turn into a top two way centre in the NHL. Räty might be a bust. Or he may be the next Roope Hintz. Time will tell, but it’s too early to write him off. FYI, Roope was projected to be a 3C in the NHL, they compared him to Patrik Berglund. Raty is projected to be a 2C in the NHL and they compare him to Nazem Kadri.

[Rumour] Canucks Getting Calls on Luke Schenn
Elias Pettersson replied to Warhippy's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I think they are very desperate to make the playoffs. They signed Huberdeau, Weegar and Kadri to those long term contracts. Markstrom only has 3 years left. Their window is closing fast... -

You’re not freeing up $8 million if you trade Miller. Most certainly you are taking money back. A trade to Carolina most certainly would involve JK and taking back a 3C at $5 million. So over 60% of that $8 million in cap space is already spent. I believe stawns is the one suggesting to go out and get UFA’s to fill some holes. -

IMO, once Miller was signed Horvat was going to get traded. I don’t buy what JR/PA were selling to be totally honest. I don’t believe they had any intention of signing both of them and the last few months were just for show. That’s my own opinion and I could be totally wrong.
