Bear shouldn't be anywhere near the top 4. Neither should Myers, OEL or Schenn. This is why our defence is so bad. We need legit top 4 Dmen. I don't want to pay Bear $2.5 million so he can play with Hughes and fill a spot. He shouldn't be in that position. JR needs to completely overhaul the D this summer. An OEL buyout would be the start of that. Moving on from Myers, Dermott and Bear continues that plan. The only 2 guys I would actually keep on the roster are Hughes and Stillman and maybe Schenn if he wants to come back. Stillman and Schenn are your bottom pairing guys. So we need THREE top 4 Dmen. We probably can't get all 3 in one summer, so most likely we have to run with Myers for one more year and then use that money in the summer of 2024. For this summer, we need to bring in Jake Livingstone and sign one UFA guy. I'd go hard after Ryan Graves. He would replace OEL on the second pairing. They you need to make a trade. Boeser, Hoglander, the Islanders 1st round pick are all in play. JR needs to hit a home run on a trade that brings in another top 4 Dman.

[Rumour] Canucks Getting Calls on Luke Schenn

OEL may be on the verge of being bought out in the summer. How can you say he is a top pairing guy? What games are you watching? The last game he played he was worse than Stillman... -
Bear doesn't move the needle for me anymore. He's gonna want a $2.2-5 million deal. I'd rather use that money to get an actual top 4 Dman. Myers, Dermott, Bear, Burroughs can all leave. OEL needs to be bought out. That leaves Hughes as our only top 4 guy and then a couple of bottom pairing guys in Schenn and Stillman...

Severson starts at $6 million. Graves will get minimum 5x5. Gavrikov the same. Mayfield doesn't move the needle anymore, he looked weak playing against the Canucks. Soucy is a bottom pairing guy. We don't need bottom pairing guys. We need top 4 Dmen. The only top 4 Dman we currently have the on the team that actually is a top 4 Dman is Hughes. The other guys are all bottom pairing guys... -

Any Dman in the 29-31 age range that is quality will come with a high cap hit and with term. Unless you are suggesting we sign guys like Nick Jensen, Radko Gudas or Travis Hamonic... -

There are 13 guys in the top 50 UFA's for next year that are 27-28. Out of those 13 guys, probably 5-6 are locked up prior to hitting UFA. Pastrnak and Larkin are the two big names that will get locked up. After the top 5-6, you are looking at scraps like Miles Wood, JT Compher, Alexander Kerfoot, Pius Suter, etc. These guys aren't moving the needle at all. Erik Gudbranson signed a 4x4 contract last summer. Those support Dmen you are talking about are not as cheap as you are portraying. We will be overpaying for any UFA we sign, period. Myers, Eriksson, Beagle, Roussel, Poolman, Ferland. Even Mikheyev is overpriced. If you want to add some cheap 4th line support players or 3rd pairing Dmen, then that is a different story. But that's not what we need. We need top 4 Dmen and top 6, top 9 forwards. If you are trading Miller, you are opening up one hole to fill another. So, we trade Miller for a top 4 Dman. Who is then playing 2C? Dries? Or are you praying we win the lottery and draft Bedard or Fantilli? -

UFA's are rarely in the 27-year-old range. Most are 29-30 years old or older. The 27-year-old guys are usually the guys that are either locked up by their current team or traded to another team who locks them up. Horvat is a great example of that. I'm sure Pastrnak will be locked up before he hits UFA as well. I actually agree with you. Not everybody on the team has to be young, even in a rebuild. That's why having Miller around makes sense, even if we were to be rebuilding, which we are not. We don't need to trade Miller in order to fix the defence. There are several other players that need to be dealt with before we ever get to Miller, who is actually doing quite fine right now and living up to his contract, unlike some others on the team. Boeser, OEL, Myers, these are the guys that need to go ASAP. Garland could be another. Miller is way far down the list of players that need to be moved... -

You said you wanted to rebuild the defence though UFA signings. UFA's are usually in the 29-30 year old range are they not? You also said if we are moving all those guys we are committing to a youth movement so what's the point in keeping Miller? Isn't committing to a youth movement classified as a rebuild? -

The only fantasizing that is being done on CDC is your fantasy that Miller is going to be traded. You are literally living that fantasy on a daily basis... -

So, you want to rebuild this team through UFA signings? I'm sorry, but that is not how it works. You literally want to trade a 30-year-old on a 7-year deal to sign more 30 year olds to 5–7-year deals through UFA? Rebuilding means trading your veterans and acquiring picks and prospects. Not signing veterans through UFA. Also, if you trade Miller, who is going to take his spot? Another UFA signing? -

Yes, I am imagining that scenario right here in Vancouver... -

Rebuilding teams don't need cap space, that is why they are rebuilding. Also, you can't ice a lineup of all 20-year-old players, it doesn't work that way unless you want to be like Arizona. You don't need to trade every player over 25 if you are rebuilding. Also, we aren't rebuilding and tearing everything down. We already have our core pieces in place in Petey and Hughes. They won't be hanging around if we trade every single player who has term on their contract over 25 years old. -
It's alot for a 32-year-old rental, but O'Reilly is exactly what the Leafs need. They don't have his caliber of defensive specialist on the roster. We are talking elite Selke trophy winning defensive capabilities. Plus, he is a Stanley cup champion. He will be taking all the important draws, penalty killing and matching up with the other teams top line. You can even throw him on the wing to play with Matthews or Tavares. Just last year he actually had a better year than Horvat, finished 4th in the Selke voting and was a PPG in the playoffs, so he should be rejuvenated to play with his hometown team. The Leafs are basically all in. If they don't win a cup this year, then Matthews probably walks and they are done...
