  1. Hughes may be not at the same level defensively as most of those players right now, but he is improving each year. It is not entirely impossible that he puts together an incredible year both offensively and defensively as some point in the future. Also, Rick Tocchet is installing a more defensive structure which will help the entire defence to keep shot totals down and suppress more high-quality chances. Plus, on top of that, Hughes now has Adam Foote and Sergei Gonchar working with him. Two of the better defensive Dmen in recent history. Petey took a huge step forward in his defensive game and is now being looked at as a Selke trophy nominee at some point. I can see Hughes doing the same thing defensively and getting some Norris trophy votes at some point in the near future.
  2. Hughes is currently a +13 on one of the worst defensive teams in the NHL. Nobody else is even close to him on our team. And he is doing that playing over 24 minutes a night and playing with Ethan Bear and Luke Schenn. Compare that to all of the guys you just mentioned who play on teams with a much better defensive record. Not to mention they have far superior playing partners that play with them. Hedman plays with Cernak or Sergachev. Makar plays with Toews. McAvoy plays with Lindholm. Imagine if Hughes had a partner like Cernak or Lindholm? Imagine if the Canucks could actually play defence? The current Norris trophy winner, Makar, has 45 points and is a +5. Hughes has 49 points and is a +13. That’s pretty damn impressive if you ask me considering the sh*t show Hughes has been playing in this year. I think at some point Hughes will be in the conversation for Norris Trophy. He’s only 23. Lidstrom didn’t win his first Norris trophy until he was 31. So Hughes has a lot of time and alot of the guys you mentioned are much older and will be past their prime in 4-5 years.
  3. Petey is a 100 point player. He’s currently a top 5 centre in the league. Plus he’s probably gonna win the Selke trophy at some point. If you add a top 6 forward plus a top 4 Dman as a package with him then that is far superior in trade value than McDavid by himself.
  4. Bear needs to be injured for at least the next 5 minutes so Petey can take the penalty shot…
  5. We are showcasing Boeser. He is doing his part by piling up those assists. Hopefully we get a decent return for him.
  6. Yes, of course. I add the spaghetti to make it look Italian…
  7. Miller is teaching him a lot more right now than Podkolzin would ever learn playing with Raty…
  8. I think I’m having spaghetti and meatballs for lunch…
  9. They probably feel just as bad as Canucks fans after watching Tkachuk play…
  10. We seem to play much better when there is an Italian in the lineup…
  11. Our best offer that was publicized was 7.5x7. I heard 7x8 from Frank Seravalli as well. That is market value for BO. He isn’t worth more than Gabriel Landeskog and certainly isn’t worth the same contract as little Johnny. At the end of the day, he found a team that would overpay for him. It happens. We gave Loui a 6x6 contract. So it happens. Doesn’t mean we needed to do it this time. We picked Miller over BO. That’s the bottom line. Even Satiar Shah said it was the correct decision. We picked the 99 point player over the 52 point player. Horvat supposedly brought us all the intangibles, but without him we are just as good in the faceoff circle and our penalty killing is actually better since he left. Our PP looked fine without him as well with Beauviller in the bumper spot. Believe it or not we can survive and even thrive without Horvat and his $68 million contract.
  12. The year Boston traded Joe Thornton to San Jose, he got 125 points and won the Art Ross trophy and the Hart trophy. I wonder if BO will follow in his footsteps...
  13. Sure, that makes sense long term. However, it doesn't really help JR and Tocchet for the short term. I guess we will find out in the summer what direction these guys take.
  14. His buyout next year saves over $7 million. And the year after it saves over $5 million. The cap savings are huge in the first two years. Much more than $2.5 million. With a $7 million cap savings next year and if we are able to trade Myers as well that frees up over $13 million in cap space for next season. We could get 3 Dmen at $4 million each to take their place.
  15. Both OEL and Myers will be gone next year. My hunch is OEL will be bought out. The reason I think that is that we really need to shore up the top 4 D. OEL doesn't fit in the top 4 anymore, not for Tocchet type hockey anyways. People are saying that the 8-year buyout is crazy, but Minnesota did the exact same thing with TWO players, not one. And those buyouts were actually worse. People who think OEL isn't going to get bought out aren't looking at the big picture. JR is 74. He's not gonna be around to see out OEL's last 4 years. Tocchet is on a 3-year deal. He won't be around either. And neither will Allvin. Petey and Quinn are just coming into their prime. We can't afford to wait it out 4 more years in order to get rid of OEL's contract. We need his cap space next year and his spot in the top 4 taken by someone who can eat 23 minutes a night and can play a Tocchet defensive minded game. If we were to get rid of OEL and Myers then Miller would be a perfect fit to be our veteran presence on the team, he already has an "A". His contract is totally fine for someone putting a PPG numbers and taking the important faceoffs.
  16. So, what exactly is the plan to bottom out? Our goalie has been out for 3 months. We are playing 2 AHL goalies, rotating them every game. We have a borderline NHL defence, with Riley Stillman as our tank commander. The only way to make the defence worse is to trade Quinn or hope he gets injured. Do you suggest we trade Quinn for picks and prospects in order to tank harder for Bedard? What about the forwards? We traded our captain and leading goal scorer for picks and prospects. We shut down Mikheyev. Pearson has been out for months. We sent Podkolzin and Aman to the minors. We only called them back up because we needed some warm bodies in the lineup. We are playing Boeser over Kuzmenko and basically shutting down Petey's wingman, but Boeser doesn't seem to be cooperating because he is playing his best hockey of the season. Petey isn't cooperating either because he is still getting points in bunches even without his wingman. Miller is playing like the old Miller. So, what do we do? Do we trade Miller and Petey for picks and prospects in order to tank harder for Bedard? At the end of the day, we are better than the bottom feeders. The only way we could be worse than Chicago, Arizona, Columbus, Anaheim and San Jose is if we traded Petey and Quinn. I don't think management wants to risk trading our two star players for a small chance in getting another star player. That doesn't really help us, it actually makes us worse. The only way we could ever fully tank is if we didn't have star players on the team already. Basically, it's Petey and Quinn that are not allowing us to go full on tank mode and lose every game...
  17. How are Edmonton and Buffalo doing over these last 10 years after multiple first overall picks? Have they won the cup yet? Rangers? New Jersey? Aren't the Rangers top two draft picks currently playing on their 3rd line? How much are they contributing to their success?
  18. You can't force players to lose games. They won't listen. Every player wants to win. Try telling Petey that he needs to lose the next 30 games so they can draft Connor Bedard. How do you think Petey is going to respond to that? If a team truly wants to tank, then you have to trade off all or most of their good players for picks and prospects. You have to make the team really bad because the players aren't going to purposely tank. We have shut down Demko for the better part of 3 months and are playing AHL quality goalies, we traded our top goal scorer for mostly future players, we have Myers and OEL playing in the top 4 and Stillman commanding the left side. We have multiple AHL call ups in the lineup. What else are we supposed to do? It's not the players fault that the remaining guys in the lineup are still good enough to win games...
  19. Actually, I was being generous to Horvat. I failed to mention that he went from 52 points in year 3, to 61 points in year 5, and then back down to 52 points in year 8. So, I am not sure how anyone can objectively state that that is progression of a player...
