[Signing] Islanders re-sign Bo Horvat
Elias Pettersson replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Real Estate prices fluctuate from year to year, but if you look at the overall trend over a 5 year period or more, they always go up. Same with the stock market. Salaries in the NHL and elsewhere don't really follow that model. Salaries don't go down 20% in one year like Real Estate prices can do. They don't fluctuate to the same level year over year. For the most part, salaries go up every year, unless there is some outlier economic situation like a pandemic or financial crisis... -

[Signing] Islanders re-sign Bo Horvat

Why isn't Miller comparable to Jack Eichel? Just because he was drafted 2nd overall? Eichel has never hit more than 82 points in his entire career, even with over 20 minutes on average in ice time since his rookie year. On a powerhouse Vegas team, he is not even a PPG guy... -

Real Estate prices have actually come down almost 20% off their peak from last April. So bad analogy to be honest. -
[Signing] Islanders re-sign Bo Horvat

True. Horvat's deal is worse because he is a pending UFA. You would think he would have negotiated at least some signing bonuses into his contract since he had total control over his future... -
[Signing] Islanders re-sign Bo Horvat

Last year the Islanders leading scorer had 59 points. NY Islanders also have the worst power play in the entire NHL. So, I don't think you can compare what Horvat was doing with the Canucks players versus what he will do with the Islanders players. If Barzal was playing with Vancouver he is probably a 100 point player. Playing with the Islanders he is a 60 point player on average over the last 4 years. As a matter of fact, Barzal's production over the last 4 years isn't any better than Horvat's. So, if Barzal isn't racking up the points playing on that defence first Islanders team, what makes you think that Horvat will fair any better? -

People keep calling Boeser a 30 goal scorer even though he has never scored 30 goals. How is that rubbish? Last I checked you actually have to actually score 30 goals in order to be called a 30 goal scorer... -

Horvat has 54 points. He could score 7 more points and still not hit more than 61 points. Will he break 61 points this year? Sure, he probably gets 70+. That still doesn't put him at the same level as little Johhny. Even if you are comparing actual annual salaries, Horvat at $8.5 million is a huge overpayment versus Gaudreau at $9.75 million. Gaudreau was at 1.01 PPG average for his entire career before he signed his contract. Even if you include this outlier year, Horvat is at .68 PPG for his career. The two players aren't even in the same stratosphere when it comes to production. If Johhny is at $9.75 million then Horvat should be at $6.75 million. Gabriel Landeskog has had better production than Horvat his entire career, is the captain of his team, and has more intangibles than Horvat. And he is at $7 million per year. Horvat is not worth more than Gabriel Landeskog. Sorry. If a senile and desperate Lou Lam wants to pay Horvat $68 million, good on him. Lou is already regretting the contract and Horvat hasn't even played a game yet for the Islanders... -

He improved in exactly the same way that Boeser improved. I mean Boeser was a 30 goal scorer every year he's been in Vancouver, even though he has never actually scored 30 goals. -

So, how do you know that Horvat would have scored more points playing a few more games? What if he got into a slump? The fact of the matter is that Horvat has never exceeded 61 points. EVER. Not even this year. For all we know he may not even hit 61 points this year. Players don't get $68 million contracts if they are career 60 point players. Horvat had a huge outlier half a season and was overpaid because of it. How else can you look at this? Johnny Gaudreau literally signed for the same amount of total dollars after a 115 point year. On what planet are BO and little Johnny in the same value contract wise? -

Horvat had 52 points in 2016-2017. Horvat had 52 points in 2021-2022. How exactly is that IMPROVING? -

You really think Horvat is going to be popping in 40 goals a year playing with the Islanders? Tell me this isn't so Wai, you are much smarter than this my friend... -

Brock Nelson and Mathew Barzal each had 59 points last year and led the Islanders in scoring. They are not a high scoring team. Their power play this year is also the worst in the league. Right at the bottom with Montreal. I highly doubt that Horvat is going to be getting all those bumper spot goals moving forward. And even if he is their 1C, I don't see him anywhere near his current pace next season... -
OEL has a NMC, so the chances he agrees to a trade are almost zero unless Boston wants him, which I highly doubt they do even at 50% retention...

[Signing] Islanders re-sign Bo Horvat
Elias Pettersson replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
As soon as they signed Miller in the offseason they were going to trade Horvat. They were never going to sign both. If Horvat's camp really wanted $8.5 million then there never was a deal to be made and the last few months were all a show to make it look like they were trying to re-sign him. Horvat was given all the ice time he needed this year to pump his value up as high as possible. He had only 52 points last year, so being on a 90+ point pace is incredibly difficult to do the very next season unless you are being fed opportunities that didn't exist even as late as last season. As for the Miller vs Horvat comparisons, you are being disingenuous when you just lump their entire careers together to make the argument that their numbers are similar. Miller wasn't a 9th overall pick like Horvat. Also, his first 3 years in the league he bounced around from the AHL to the NHL, so he wasn't getting much playing opportunity at all. Miller only averaged 13 minutes in ice time his first 3 years in the league. Even after that he was only at 15 minutes. In Tampa he averaged only 14 minutes for that entire year he was there. In contrast, Horvat was already over 17 minutes in his 2nd season in the NHL, and that number grew to over 20 minutes by his 4th year. Miller never came close to playing 20 minutes a night until he arrived in Vancouver. As soon as Miller hit 20 minutes a night in Vancouver that is when he became a regular PPG guy in the NHL. In contrast, Horvat has been playing 20 minutes a night on average for the last 6 years, but was only getting 50-60 points until this year. You can argue that he wasn't playing with the best players, but Horvat was still getting huge amounts of ice time in comparison to Miller up until Miller arrived in Vancouver. If you think that Horvat is worth more money than Gabriel Landeskog and the same money as Johnny Gaudreau, then good on you. Others don't feel the same way. Gaudreau was a 115 point player last year, so not sure how Horvat could be demanding a similar $68 million contract. That's some bat sh*t crazy stuff right there... -
JR won't be around another 8 years. So IMO I think he will buy out OEL so he can take advantage of the huge cap savings over the next 2 years. The cap will go up substantially in year 3 of the buyout and the cap should be around $92 million in years 3 and 4 when the biggest hits occur. If JR/PA are looking at trying to make the playoffs over the next two years, then the first two years cap savings will be huge and will allow us to get a true top 4 Dman on the left side to complement Hughes. It doesn't make alot of sense to buy out OEL after this year until the last year of his contract as that $7 million in savings only happens this summer, so if they are contemplating buying him out, it will only happen either this summer or in the last year of his deal...

[Signing] Islanders re-sign Bo Horvat
Elias Pettersson replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
That's a pretty good analogy really. The Canucks pumped up Horvat's value to the moon and sold him at his highest point ever. The Islanders took the bait and now will be left holding the bag. If Horvat was a $100 stock I would say his value has already dropped to $90 and will be $70 by the end of the year. The value will probably be less than $50 at the end of next year once Horvat plays a full year in the Islanders defence first system... -

We will know if we are getting Bedard after the lottery, which gives us plenty of time to look at the roster. If we actually get Bedard, then yeah I don't think we need to buyout OEL. In fact, we might end up trading Petey in that scenario and make Bedard the face of the franchise. I'm not sure both players could co-exist, primarily because of the money involved to tie both players up long term. We don't really want to be Edmonton or even Toronto... -
[DEBATE] JT Miller or Bo Horvat? Who you got?

I agree. If BO is at $8.5 million then Miller's contract is definitely moveable if he is at 70+ points. He has a NMC however, so they would have to make a decision before July 1. -

Elias Pettersson replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I agree, it's not like I'm advocating to have dead money on the books for 8 years. It all depends on what the plan is. If the plan is to suck for 4 years and rebuild, then yeah we can just ride out the contract. If the plan is actually to be competitive in 2 years, then we need to get OEL's contract off of the roster and use that freed up money for a player that can play in the top 4. -

I don't agree. The cap hit is almost zero next year and only $2 million the year after. There are a couple of years of pain but it beats having OEL playing on the 3rd pairing at $7.26 million...
