  1. BO and Beagle can take those draws. Much more important to have a top PK'er who can play with Motte. And his play without the puck is very good. He can even drop the gloves if he has too. This is what Benning was looking for. a 3C with size who can play physical and be a top Pk'er. He's not a perfect specimen, you are not going to get that for a 3rd round pick. I would have preferred Appleton but the cost was much higher.
  2. Why would we have traded for Leddy when we already have Hughes, Rathbone and Schmidt? Leddy doesn't kill penalties. We have enough smallish Dmen who don't play physical.
  3. There's more to defensive play then just taking draws. Apparently Dickinson was Dallas's top PK'er last year...
  4. "Dickinson can go unnoticed to casual hockey fans. He’s a fourth-line center — and occasional top-six winger — who is among the team’s best at killing penalties and shutting down top opponents with his speed and smarts. He’s a former first-round pick who has become a reliable everyday player in Dallas, not with his offense but with his responsible defense". Looks like we found our C for the penalty kill. Will take a load off of BO as well for defensive matchups.
  5. Deals will be made public up until around 12:30pm our time as paperwork is being processed. The deal has to be final, can't be a handshake, needs to be in writing and sent to the league by 12 noon our time.
  6. Sure you can wait the 4 years, but then when we don't make the playoffs you will want everyone fired with a full rebuild as well. Can't have it both ways. Benning is trying to build a playoff team right now, not 4 years from now. We have most of the pieces in place. A 3rd line RW/3C is exactly what we are missing from the core and we don't have that player in the system.
  7. Gillis traded picks to get veterans to help with the Cup run. He wasn't picking up 25 year old guys on cheap contracts who haven't hit their peak yet. Would you prefer we wait 4 years for our 2021 2nd round pick to develop or get someone who can help now who is at the right age group with our core players? Remember BO is 26, so Appleton is still younger than him.
  8. 2nd round picks are not a given to even play in the NHL. Sure you can get Hoglander who can play in your top 6 but like you said you can also get a Lind or Gadjovich where 4 years later they are not even in your lineup. It's a crapshoot even for Benning. Appleton ticks all the boxes and can play with our core right now. At 25 he hasn't even hit his prime yet. At 900k his cap hit is minimal for this year and we can give him a big raise next year when we have millions in cap space.
  9. They probably want someone they don't need to protect. So a 2nd and Utunen or Focht. I think Appleton would be a perfect fit on the 3rd line. He can play right wing or centre and be a top penalty killer. He can also move up into the top 6 when needed, Has speed to burn and I think he can be a 20 goal scorer. The cost might be too high though. If we can somehow get another 2nd round pick I would do it and give Winnipeg our 2nd. Maybe we can get a 2nd for Schmidt and then sign Hakanpaa and Hamonic as UFA's to play the right side.
  10. 8x8 is the new 6x6. I'd do an 8x8 for Quinn and Petey. All we need to do it is for Eriksson to retire. One can dream...
  11. That sounds like fun. I never was much of a skier myself. Too scared to go up the mountains really. I grew up playing and watching football (soccer) though. I do remember the days when athletes played for the love of the game. Some still do. In terms of football, especially in Europe, the salaries are crazy now. You have guys making $10-15 million per year net after taxes. Guys like Messi and Ronaldo are making $30 million+. Of course your legacy is important. But feeding your family is also important. I get what you are saying, what's the difference of a few million on a $36 million contract? To us normal people it doesn't mean much, but to an athlete it does. I mean after taxes, after paying their agent, after escrow, that money goes real quick. And some of these guys are moving around alot. Also, most of these guys aren't very good with their money, they let an agent or an adviser handle their affairs, sometimes their parents. I'm sure you know all the horror stories of players declaring bankruptcy, their parents stealing their money, people suing them for millions. Alot of these guys barely passed high school, so for them to be getting millions when they are in their 20's it is easy to spend that money. Anyways, I do remember the days when most athletes played just for the love of the game. Sports has changed and it's a multi-billion dollar business now. You are one head shot away from your career ending so you better make sure you provide for your family. Most careers don't last very long either. Some guys only play a few years and then they have to find a regular job in their 20's or 30's.
  12. Ah right, that Sergachev trade was before the Pacioretty trade. Well they've been in rebuild mode since 2018 then, and they have only Kotkaniemi, Romanov and Caulfield to show for it from the draft. Another thing to consider is that Bergevin's draft record is horrendous. Since he took over the draft in 2012 Montreal has only had 5 draft picks who have played over 200 games. Out of those 5 only one is still with the team. His best draft pick was Sergachev and he traded him away. Does Montreal really want him controlling the draft this year with those 11 picks? I would be very concerned if I was a Montreal fan as this year's draft will be crucial to their future success. I mean if Bergevin isn't gonna be around next year it kinda sucks that he will be the one making the call in the draft this year. But then you can't really fire a GM who just went to the finals either. Montreal may have been better off missing the playoffs this year, firing Bergevin and basically starting from scratch...
  13. I'm hoping they can negotiate a long term deal prior to next summer. I think he will have 2 more years to UFA status (correct me if I'm wrong), so a long term 7-8 year deal in the $7-8 million range would be ideal.
  14. Toffoli is getting paid $4.25 million. I highly doubt they signed him to be a 3rd line winger. He might have started on the 3rd line but he's getting paid to be in their top 6. Bergevin traded a young stud in Sergachev before he could even lace them up for Montreal. Probably their best draft pick in the last 14 years since the 2007 draft. Why would you trade your best draft pick of the last 14 years if you are in a rebuild mode? Especially given the fact he was their only top D prospect in their whole system. Romanov is not even close to Sergachev. Sergachev is a stud and would be on Montreal's top pairing right now. He was a top 10 pick so they did give up on a high draft pick. The Montreal media may be praising him now, but just wait until they start missing the playoffs every year. Montreal is a hockey market, much bigger than Vancouver. Their team is on a downward slide and they don't have much in the kitty right now. 11 picks this year is nice but those guys won't be in the lineup for 2-3 years or longer. Gonna be a long rebuild for them.
  15. Yeah I don't see him signing with anyone other than a contender. I think Tampa may go for it as they will walk from Savard and Schenn. He has Hedman there and that's where Ohlund went. I could see that happening. And I think he has around 2 years left as well. Once your legs go as a defenceman, unless you are Chris Pronger, your career is pretty much over, especially in the modern game. I don't see him going back to Sweden. He came here at 19 to play in Kelowna for a year and has been in Vancouver ever since and married a local girl. I don't think he'd have any interest in moving back to Sweden.
  16. I'm not so sure. Kotkaniemi, Romanov and Suzuki (via trade) were all acquired 3 years ago. All they have to show for the last 3 years is little Cole. They traded Sergachev, a top 10 pick, before he could even play one season for Montreal in order to acquire Drouin, a guy 3 years older who was already having issues in Tampa. They acquired Anderson by trading Domi, so that was a lateral move at best. They signed Chiarot in 2019 and Edmundson in 2020 as UFA's to be in their top 4. They signed a 29 year old Toffoli as a UFA to be in their top 6. Most of their D are on the wrong side of 30 and their goalie is 34 in August. That doesn't look to me to be a team in a full rebuild mode. More like a retool on the fly. Their FULL rebuild starts next summer when Bergevin is gone. I can see them collecting more picks for next year as well. They have 11 this year. They need to rebuild their entire defence and starting goalie, which is going take a long time.
  17. I didn't realize Bergevin was on his last year. If that is the case then most likely Montreal stands pat and keeps all their picks. They don't re-sign Danault either. Looks like they are going to start the rebuilding process as soon as next summer. Too bad they didn't win the Cup. I don't see them in another final for a long time.
  18. That's a lowball from Sakic. He is trying to sign him for less than what MacKinnon is getting paid as he knows he has to re-sign Makar and eventually MacKinnon again. I think Landeskog can get a minimum $7 million on the open market, so there is a real chance he walks away.
  19. Bergevin had his fun. I think next year reality sets in. Weber will be gone and that defence will be shaky. Kotkaniemi isn't really what people thought he would be. Caufield is tiny and it will be tough for him to get through a full regular season unscathed. Price is getting older and is injury prone. Toffoli will come back down to Earth and score at his 20 goal pace again. They may lose Danault in free agency. Montreal will have a hard time making the playoffs next year. I think they should rebuild through the draft. But Bergevin will want to save his job so he will probably make some trades to keep the team competitive. He may look to trade some of his 2021 picks to do that.
