Oh no they never played on the same line. But Gretzky was the #1 centre and him and Kurri got the toughest matchups. Messier was on the 2nd line with Anderson so he wasn’t the other teams primary concern. With Perreault his line was the main attraction and got the attention of all the top defensive players. Buffalo was a one line team for the most part. A one man show was probably not the best use of words. Martin and Robert were great players in their own right although they never made it to the Hall of Fame. No doubt Messier at his peak was a level above Perreault. But if Buffalo had a Messier on the team on the 2nd line I’m sure it would have helped The French Connection to get to another level. I’m thinking Buffalo would have had a shot at the Cup with a Messier on the team.

Farm team name, brand and logo reveal

People wanting the Johnny Canuck on the actual Canuck jersey, and now when Aquilini puts it on the AHL jersey people are upset. I knew the name was going to be Canucks months ago. That's how Aquilini works. He wants things to be traditional. He was the owner who went back to the original colours. You must have all forgot about that. He won't change the Orca logo either because the Stick In The Rink is already our secondary logo and now the Johnny Canuck is the primary logo in Abbotsford. -

[Signing] Bruins re-sign Brandon Carlo

This is a good deal for Boston. Lock him up long term on a pretty decent deal for a top 4 guy. Hopefully for Boston he doesn't have recurrent concussion issues, but in my opinion he was the perfect partner for Hughes along with Erik Cernak. -
If we can trade Holtby for a positive return and buy out Virtanen then our cap situation is greatly improved. That's $6.3 million freed up. If we can trade Schmidt that would free up even more money depending on the contract that comes back. We may be able to free up close to $10 million even if we keep Loui around. Should be an interesting few weeks. With Carlo signed to a $4.1 million deal I don't think these RHD UFA's will be able to command the prices that they want. You may be able to get a guy like Hakanpaa for under $3 million and Hamonic's value may be in the $2.5 million range.

This makes sense once the ED is over and some teams have lost goalies while others are losing goalies via UFA. Holtby could be attractive to a few teams I think. I don't think we need to add a sweetener to move him either. With one year left on his deal we should be able to get a draft pick or prospect in return.

At the end of the day we should have gotten Gretzky the year prior. He would have never stripped Linden of the captaincy, he could have played with Bure and extended his career a few more years and Gretzky would have been happy with Quinn has his coach and would have been a much better fit on the team. Oh well, what could have been to have the greatest player ever on your team even for a short while...

Depends what you consider top 4? Given his ability on the pk and playing hard mins, I'd bet he'd be a top 4 guy in TOI on Tampa. He might not play top 4 mins 5v5, but at the end of the game I think you'd find Edler with top 4 mins overall. He's slowed down, but he still plays a solid, rugged defensive game. As another poster said, the Canucks need more of that, not less This is what you wrote. If he's not even in the lineup how is he getting top 4 minutes? Also, in order for him to be on the PK he'd have to beat out Hedman, Sergachev, Cernak and Savard. Listen, I like Edler and think he is a Canuck legend, but his past due date was a long time ago, he's much slower than he used to be and not as aggressive either. He will be a good mentor for Juolevi and Rathbone and I have no problem with him rotating in and out of the lineup next year. But if he is re-signed to a $3 million+ contract with the expectation that he will be in the top 4 again on a regular basis next year playing the hard minutes I will be very disappointed in Benning and Green.

Pulock is 26 and Mayfield is 28. So unless one of them starts playing the left side it’s gonna be difficult for Dobson to crack the top 4 anytime soon. If I were the Islanders I wouldn’t trade Dobson either. I’m just trying to figure out hoe they are going to fit him into the top 4 over the next 2 years. In the playoffs he was averaging anywhere from 9 to 17 minutes a game. So they are obviously trying to work him in.

Hedman, Cernak, Sergachev, McDonagh, Savard. Umm no Edler is not in the top 4. He may not even dress on most games. But this is Tampa and their defence would be considered illegal in 35 states so not really a great comparison to be honest. If you looks at the Islanders you have Pulock, Mayfield, Pelech and Leddy. Leddy would be on your #1 PP and Mayfield is your #1 Pk'er. And Pelech and Pulock is your top pairing, so again Edler is on your 3rd pairing. Vegas is a toss up, but he's #4 at best. Even on Colorado he would be on the 3rd pairing. I do like Edler but let's not kid ourselves to believe he's still a top 4 Dman on a top team in this league. He got walked on more often than Barry Bonds in his prime last year. Next year he'll be even older and slower. Edler will be fine as a rotation guy next year with the young guys on the left side (Juolevi, Rathbone). If he signs a 2 year deal then he can be your 6th or 7th D the year after. And then he can retire and we can put his number in the ring of honour.

Gilbert Perreault was the best forward on that Canada Cup team in 1976. He was at his absolute peak that year, finishing with 113 points, just a few points behind Lafleur in the scoring title. Lafleur was playing on a Montreal dynasty that had 9 future Hall of Famers on the team while Perreault was the only future Hall of Famer on that Buffalo team. I would say the 1975-1976 Gilbert Perreault was on par with the 1987-1988 Mark Messier. Messier had Gretzky for most of his time in Edmonton while Perreault was a one man show in Buffalo. I would still take Messier over Perreault, but for that one year in 1975-1976 Perreault was probably the best player in the world.

No we wouldn't trade Podkolzin because he plays right wing which is a position of need for us. As well we are not contending for a Cup so we don't have any need to add a sweetener like Podkolzin to any deal to create cap space. The Islanders on the other hand are Cup contenders and have a nice window right now to win a Cup. Their right side D are Pulock, Mayfield and Dobson. So right now Dobson is on their 3rd pairing. Also, they need to re-sign Pelech which will cost them $4-5 million. And they are actively shopping Leddy to shed cap so they can re-sign Pelech. They also have to re-sign Beauvillier, which will cost them another $4-5 million. Packaging Dobson with Ladd and receiving Schmidt plus a pick and a prospect like Jett Woo could be enticing to the Islanders as Schmidt could replace Leddy and dumping Ladd's contract would give them enough cap space to re-sign both Pelech and Beauvillier. I'm not saying it's gonna happen or that they are even considering trading Dobson, but it's not totally out of the question either. Benning is going to need to look at teams that are trying to shed cap and also teams that may lose an asset for nothing to see if he can swing a trade for a RHD. Dobson could be one of those guys. Cal Foote is another one. Hughes Dobson Juolevi Hakanpaa Edler Myers Rathbone That defence looks much better and more truculent than what we had last year...
-
Yeah Tampa's D in this year's playoffs should have been deemed illegal in at least 35 states. Just ridiculous to have a bottom pairing of Sergachev Savard. That is a top pairing on some teams. Cal Foote is someone we should explore, although I don't see him as a perfect fit for Hughes. His father would have fit like a glove with Hughes, but Cal doesn't have the same truculence as Adam did. With Leddy on the trade block I think Mayfield is out of the picture now. He would be a dream with Hughes. My second favourite choice after Erik Cernak. It will be interesting to see what Benning does with Schmidt. If he can trade him that will open up alot of opportunities for the RHD position opposite Hughes.
-
Yeah I mean people really have to think about it. Edler Hamonic on Tampa, NY Islanders, Vegas. They are a bottom pairing. Edler might have been the 7th guy on Tampa. At the end of the day I think Edler has an agreement to retire as a Canuck, that is why he only signed a 2 year deal last time. So Benning will accommodate him with another 2 year deal to end his career as a Canuck. I'm sure the number will be favourable to the team, most likely in the $2-2.5 million range. As for Hamonic, anything over $2.5 million and there are better options out there which Benning must explore. There are several RHD UFA's out there for the taking. I'd rather overpay a bit to get a Hakanpaa than to re-sign Hamonic. However, if the options get dried up I don't necessarily have a problem with Hamonic coming back as long as Benning trades Schmidt and gets someone who can play top 4 minutes with Hughes.
-
I agree with Button. Edler and Hamonic are a bottom pair on a top team. You can re-sign them but you can't stop there. I can see Edler getting re-signed as he can rotate with Juolevi and Rathbone on the left side and he won't have to be in the top 4 every game. As for Hamonic, if you are re-signing him to play with Hughes that is a big problem, as he doesn't belong on the top pairing. IF Hamonic gets re-signed then you can be almost guaranteed that a Schmidt trade is happening and that Benning is going to go after a big fish to play with Hughes.
-
I agree. I think Edler gets re-signed and he can rotate with Juolevi/Rathbone for a year or two. Benning will most likely upgrade the RHD position. I see a Schmidt trade coming and I don't think Hamonic is coming back. Hakanpaa can fill Hamonic's role and be more effective. As for Schmidt's replacement, that is where Benning will need to get creative and find someone that another team doesn't wanna lose for free. He needs to make a hockey trade to find the right guy.
