If you have Netflix I highly recommend watching the 30 for 30 episode “Kings Ransom”. It goes over the trade in detail and Peter Berg talks to Wayne while they are on the golf course. He asks Wayne directly about how many Cups he could have won. I think his exact words were “7 or 8”. Wayne said he could have stopped the trade if he wanted too. Pocklington left it up to him. He went ahead with it because it was best for both the team and himself. Pocklington didn’t have the money to pay everyone so eventually the team would have had to be dismantled anyways. Everyone eventually got traded and Pocklington eventually sold the team. I still think the Edmonton Oilers of the 80’s were the greatest team ever. The Canadiens of the 70’s were allowed to stay together. If that Edmonton team had stayed together I think they win 9 or 10 Cups. Gretzky was only 28 when he was traded. Imagine if that team had stuck together until they were all into their mid 30’s. At 28 Gretzky was already only 181 points away from Howe’s all time points record. He probably gets 1100 goals and 3500 points if the Edmonton team had stayed together a few more years.

[Report] Wild buying out Ryan Suter and Zach Parise

I don't know either. Too many things going on right now on CDC... -
Edmonton probably gets Leddy for less than they paid for Keith. And he's only 30 still in his prime and on the same contract. Holland must totally be out of the loop with the other GM's these days. His best days are clearly behind him. You would think with a few phone calls he would have known Leddy was on the block a day after he trades for Keith. Unless he feels a 38 year old Keith is better than a 30 year old Leddy. If that is the case then Holland has much bigger problems.

If there wasn't a cap the big market teams in the US would be getting all the big name UFA's not little Edmonton. That's the reason we have a cap to begin with, was to make small market teams like Edmonton become more competitive. If there was no cap you don't think the Rangers could offer McDavid a $20 million a year deal? -

If playing in Edmonton with McJesus is such a big selling point then why aren't all the UFA's flocking to go there? The only reason Keith went there is because he wanted to be closer to his family and Calgary and Vancouver had no interest in him so Edmonton was literally the only team he would go to. Which tells you how bad Holland screwed up in the trade. As for Suter, like I said he is collecting millions to be bought out. I think he may go to the Islanders as they are shopping Nick Leddy. -

Suter has already made over $84 million in his career. Why would he choose to go to Edmonton when there are better teams out there that will want him and he can stay in the US? I don't think his main concern will be money. He's also getting a big chunk of money to be bought out so he can literally play for minimum wage now and go try and win a Cup somewhere. -

These buyouts aren't that bad if you really think about it. Dumba gets to be protected, you get two ageing players off your roster, and now you can focus on rebuilding. If you are rebuilding with young players on ELC contracts then the cap doesn't really matter. By the time these buyouts expire and hit $833,000 the Wild will have rebuilt their roster. Plus it forces Minnesota to actually rebuild and not try a retool on the fly which is probably a good idea. They should have enough money to re-sign Kaprizov and Fiala long term who will be big pieces of their rebuild. They can then go with a bunch of ELC contracts for 3 years until the buyout money is off the books. -

There is no guarantee Suter would have went to Edmonton. Keith had a legit reason to be on the West Coast. Suter is American. I doubt he wants to play in Edmonton... -

It won't save us much to be honest. If we buy him out it's $4 million in dead money. If we bury him in Abbotsford it's $4.875 million in dead money. Only an $875k difference for this year. And if we buy him out we have a $1 million hit next year as well. So overall it's actually worse to buy him out then bury him for next year. -

Yeah they have some pieces for sure. But they don't have a young Kane or Toews and Laniken isn't exactly a franchise goalie. They have the cap space in 2 years to keep Kane and Toews around, the question is do they want to do that or try and trad them to acquire more assets to help the rebuild? Would having them re-sign at 34-35 years old for 2-3 years be more beneficial to the team than acquiring the assets they could get by trading them? Vancouver is a prime example of keeping players past their due date and "delaying" the rebuild. I'm not a Hawks fan so don't really care what they do personally, but it should be interesting to see how they handle their two superstars as their contracts are about to expire.
-
So does Chicago go full rebuild now? Seabrook will probably stay on LTIR for the rest of his contract, so that leaves only Kane and Toews from the glory days, but only for 2 more years and then their contracts are done. In 2 years the Hawks will have over $73 million in cap space. Do they keep Kane and Toews around for the rebuild or do they try and acquire some assets for them before their contracts expire? Would someone want Kane and/or Toews with salary retained for a Cup run?

It's going to be tough for Benning to reconstruct this defense. But I think he is going to try as hard as he can to make it better. Why sign Hamonic for $3 million when there are better options out there? Moving Schmidt makes total sense if you want to revamp the top 4. I have no problem with 4 or even 5 D coming back. But Benning does have to make at least two changes. Either he simply replaces the expired contracts (Edler, Hamonic) with bigger meatier bodies or he makes a hockey trade with Schmidt. Schmidt could very well be traded for a forward, but then it would free up a spot on D to add another big body. I highly doubt Schmidt gets traded for a forward making $6 million. There should be available cap space in any Schmidt trade to be able to sign a better UFA on D than Hamonic. Woo is 2-3 years away in my opinion. He would be replacing Myers I think on a 3rd pairing if Myers sticks around until the end of his contract. Other than Woo we really have nothing on the farm or in the pipeline. Hughes, Rathbone and Juolevi are the young guys that have all graduated to the big leagues. I don't have a problem with all 3 in the lineup next year and you have Myers as a big body. Maybe you re-sign Edler and allow either Rathbone or Juolevi to transition more slowly into the lineup. But that still leaves 2 spots. If Edler is coming back I would hope that Schmidt gets traded to upgrade the right side and we sign a large body UFA like Hakanpaa or make a hockey trade for a Mayfield type.
