  1. It's going to be tough for Benning to reconstruct this defense. But I think he is going to try as hard as he can to make it better. Why sign Hamonic for $3 million when there are better options out there? Moving Schmidt makes total sense if you want to revamp the top 4. I have no problem with 4 or even 5 D coming back. But Benning does have to make at least two changes. Either he simply replaces the expired contracts (Edler, Hamonic) with bigger meatier bodies or he makes a hockey trade with Schmidt. Schmidt could very well be traded for a forward, but then it would free up a spot on D to add another big body. I highly doubt Schmidt gets traded for a forward making $6 million. There should be available cap space in any Schmidt trade to be able to sign a better UFA on D than Hamonic. Woo is 2-3 years away in my opinion. He would be replacing Myers I think on a 3rd pairing if Myers sticks around until the end of his contract. Other than Woo we really have nothing on the farm or in the pipeline. Hughes, Rathbone and Juolevi are the young guys that have all graduated to the big leagues. I don't have a problem with all 3 in the lineup next year and you have Myers as a big body. Maybe you re-sign Edler and allow either Rathbone or Juolevi to transition more slowly into the lineup. But that still leaves 2 spots. If Edler is coming back I would hope that Schmidt gets traded to upgrade the right side and we sign a large body UFA like Hakanpaa or make a hockey trade for a Mayfield type.
  2. There could be some minor improvements in the D we already have but the biggest problem for Benning is that he has already stated he needs to improve the defense and add more size and truculence. If he simply puts out the same 7 guys who finished the season last year then his integrity levels will drop to zero with this fanbase and quite honestly not even Shaw will be able to get us to the playoffs.
  3. 142 points in 1992-1993. And he wasn't playing with Hull at the time, he was in Boston. He really had a great career. Put up big numbers with multiple teams. Had 82 points at age 37. I'd say one of the most underrated players in NHL history.
  4. Isn't that the exact same defence we ended the season with? If Benning makes no changes we probably miss the playoffs and he will be headed back to Boston...
  5. Well Myers is already on the team so unless we are trading him then we are stuck with him as a 3rd pairing guy. Even if we don't upgrade on Schmidt he will still be in the top 4 so if we sign Hakanpaa or trade for a Mayfield there is no room for Hamonic. Hamonic only comes if Benning has no other options available in my opinion.
  6. I'm thinking Myers will be the guy that slides down to the 3rd pairing. If we upgrade on Schmidt and can find a partner for Hughes than their really is no room for Hamonic. I'd rather go after a guy like Hakanpaa if we are going to pay out $3 million to a UFA. Plays a much bigger game than Hamonic and I could see him partnering Hughes.
  7. Oh so Tim Soderlund is also included in the deal. That makes more sense now. Balances everything out really...
  8. I'm going with Iginla. Heart and soul of the Flames for over a decade. Couple of 50 goal seasons and almost hit 100 points a couple times. Won the Art Ross once as well. Was a beast in the playoffs in 2004. Too bad he never won a Cup.
  9. Rumour has it Edmonton is now targeting Seabrook to partner up with Keith. McDavid apparently has okayed this trade as well...
  10. Did you miss the memo? The Sedins are now running the show, Benning is just in charge of the draft now...
  11. Yes that's why they will be exposed because there is no chance Seattle takes either one so Philly can use their ED spots on other players.
  12. Why would we trade a 9OA pick as a sweetener just to dump salary that will be off the books in a year? Makes no sense at all. Benning can make other moves to clear cap and pick up some UFA’s. We are not trying to win the Cup next year, we are looking at making the playoffs. If we add a coupe defencemen and a 3C we have a good shot at doing that. We don’t need to clear out $12 million in cap space to do this.
  13. That scouting report says he could be a franchise goaltender. If that is the case I think he will go top 10 and Detroit will either take him at 6th or drop down a few to get him.
  14. There is no sure thing in this draft. Especially after the top 3 players. Norris trophy winners have been take in the 2nd round. The entire draft is a gamble really. If they are high on Wallstedt they probably take him. If they think another goalie is just as good then I’m sure they will take somebody else with the 6th overall.
  15. Yeah I think that is the reason Detroit will go with Wallstedt at 6th overall. Gonna be tough to find that stud goalie. If you think Wallstedt could be that guy then you take him. Yzerman has another first rounder plus 10 more picks to fill other holes.
  16. Gretzky got 163 assists in 1986. Only Lemieux has ever scored more than 160 points.
  17. Edler got walked more times this year than a prime Barry Bonds…
