[Proposal] Ideal Offseason
Elias Pettersson replied to Chickenspear's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I'm totally onboard with getting Cernak and Hakanpaa and trading Schmidt. It's just a question of the money and what assets are coming and leaving...- 1 reply

(Proposal) running 11F and 7D
Elias Pettersson replied to Bad_BOI_pete's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
They may do it on occasion but it is certainly not a regular occurrence or a part of their every day strategy. Teams do play 7D on occasion, mostly due to injuries and possibly matchup situations. But there is no NHL team that plays 7D on a regular basis. -

They played 6 D last game. Hedman, Sergachev, McDonagh, Cernak, Rutta and Savard. Who was the 7th D in their lineup that rotated with the 4th line? -

If 11F and 7D were actually a good idea then every team would do it. The fact that nobody does tells you everything you need to know... -
[Speculation] Is Schmidt on the move?

OEL was a 6th overall pick. Edler was picked in the 3rd round. So of course OEL has the better pedigree. He was a top flight defenceman in his prime and got his $8,250,000 contract. Edler for his draft position was a much better value though. 3rd round and ends up being a top 4 Dman on a Stanley Cup calibre team. Benning was looking into trading for OEL so I know where you are going with this, we can acquire a top flight defenceman through a trade. But the assets that needed to go back to Arizona was a deal killer. If OEL had a $6 million contract tied up for 4 more years I would have had no problem trading for him. But his term of 6 more years is a deal breaker for me as well as the extra $2 million which would screw up our internal cap and how much we pay our star players moving forward. Put it this way. I'd take OEL at $6 million for 4 more years over Schmidt... -

Oh God. Are you still using the Brackett card? Boeser was a consensus pick at 23? Have you heard the 2015 mic'd up Youtube video of Benning at the draft table? In case you missed it here it is. This is what he says verbatim after the 10th pick is made: "There's no way Boeser is getting to us. We're still like thirteen more picks". That doesn't sound like a GM who has Boeser ranked at 23: Also, what the heck happened to Boston during the 2015 draft? They literally had 3 picks in a row and bombed on all 3 of them. They passed on Barzal, Connor, Chabot, Eriksson Ek and Boeser. You'd think with 3 first round picks they would have even by a fluke taken at least one of those guys. I guess the fact that Benning was sitting at the Canucks table in 2015 and not the Bruins table might have been a reason why they bombed on all 3 of their first round picks. -

You don't acquire a player like Edler through trade unless you are trading a core piece in return. Players like Edler need to be drafted... -

Gillis was handed the core of the team from Burke and Nonis when he arrived in April 2008. This is the team he inherited: Bieksa, Burrows, Edler, Hansen, Kesler, Luongo, Schneider, Raymond, Salo, Sedin, Sedin. That's over 50% of the team that went to the finals in 2011 that were already in the lineup before Gillis even arrived on the scene. The starting goalie AND the backup, 3 of the top 4 Dmen, and 5 of the top 6 forwards plus a top 3rd liner. Imagine if Benning was given that luxury when he first started? What was Benning given in 2014 after Gillis was fired? Bieksa, Burrows, Edler, Hansen, Kesler, Luongo, Sedin, Sedin. Look familiar? Yeah it's basically the same core only 6 years older. Half of these guys are now almost in their mid 30's with No Trade Clauses. What the heck is Benning supposed to do? Not to mention there is not even one solid prospect on the team under the age of 23 other than BO. Like are you kidding me? Look I'm not trying to make excuses for Benning, he made some big mistakes over the last 7 years, but to suggest Gillis wasn't responsible for at least some of the problems over the last few years is just wrong. Also Demko and Boeser, two core pieces of the current team, were drafted by Benning in his first two years, so to say he didn't develop anyone early on is wrong. Sure he missed on some guys, but he hit a home run with Boeser and Demko. He also hit a home run with Petey, Hughes, Hoglander and Podkolzin. And I think Rathbone is going to be star and maybe Benning's best draft pick ever given his draft position in the 4th round. -

This is true. If Gillis had not emptied the cupboard and left us high and dry with only BO to show for it we may have a few more players in their mid to late 20's on the roster right now who could have helped us make the playoffs the last 4 years. Benning had to start from zero and go from there. I'm not excusing the mistakes he made along the way but those mistakes could have been mitigated if he had not been handcuffed with zero prospects in the pipeline and with an aging group of core players who all had No Trade Clauses. Put it this way, if Gillis had left us with at least something then Benning maybe doesn't have to sign an Eriksson to fill a hole in the top 6, or a Roussel and Beagle to fill bottom 6 holes. At the end of the day Benning should have been given the green light to just rebuild from the get go, but Aquilini didn't want to do that and we had the Sedins still around who wanted the team to be competitive. Hopefully the Sedins can now help Benning on the management side to fill the holes we currently have and make us a perennial playoff team. -
Yzerman finishes ahead of Sakic, Trottier for greatest player to wear No. 19 (detroitnews.com) 'NHL's Who Wore It Best?': Nos. 20-11 Former Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman finished ahead of Joe Sakic of the Avalanche and Bryan Trottier of the Islanders as the greatest player in NHL history to wear No. 19, according to a poll of nhl.com writers and editors. Yzerman, who wore No. 19 in honor of Trottier, finished with 50 points (12 first-place votes, seven second-place votes), 14 more points than Sakic and 33 more than Trottier in a contest which picked the best player to wear numbers 1-99. "Stevie Y is one of the greatest leaders in hockey history," said Dave Stubbs, nhl.com columnist and historian. "He was a selfless centerman who under coach Scotty Bowman transformed himself from a great offensive talent into a tremendous two-way player." Yzerman, whose No. 19 was retired by the Red Wings on Jan. 2, 2007, was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2009 and ranks 10th in NHL history in goals (692), ninth in assists (1,063) and seventh in points (1,755). He won the Stanley Cup three times as a player (1997, 1998 and 2002), including winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as most valuable player in the playoffs in 1998. He was a member of the Detroit front office for his fourth championship (2008).

Yeah it was Tampa's second pick of the first round so there was less risk and they could take a shot at a goalie. It kinda worked out for them too as their second pick in the first round turned out just a little better than their first pick.
