[Proposal] Van/Tampa
Elias Pettersson replied to Bertuzzipunch's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Of course he is. Where are you going to find a similar player in the draft who can partner Hughes for the next decade? a 6'3" 230 pounder who can play 23 minutes a night and be on your top pairing? There are no Cernak's in this draft. He may not be worth a top 5 pick but he is definitely worth a first round pick any day of the week. -
These are all your opinions with ZERO supporting facts. Bo is developing in spite of Green, but he is riding Petey's coat tails. Which one is it? You can't have both. Petey is a generational talent, how you can even compare him to the late Luc Bourdon is beyond me. Booth was acquired by the previous GM, what exactly does he have to do with Benning and Green? You are all over the map and your only intention on this board is to criticize the coach, the GM, the Owner, the previous GM, the previous coaches and anyone else ever associated with this franchise.

You're comparing Brogan Rafferty to Petey? Baertschi had several concussions and can't play in the NHL anymore. Vesey and Hawryluk are proven veterans. Rafferty is a nobody. David Booth? What does he even have to do with this discussion? You're all over the place trying to convince people that Brogan Rafferty is a legit NHL player and should be given the same chances as others on the team who clearly have more talent. So Green is at fault for Eriksson scoring in his own net in his first game as a Canuck and then forgetting how to play hockey for the last 5 years? Let me ask you a question. If Green is so bad at developing young players then how exactly did the Canucks end up with one Calder Trophy winner and 2 Runner-Ups in the last 3 years? Can you explain that?
-
Are you kidding me? Luc Bourdon was a 19 year old kid when he played his first game as a Canuck. Of course he was tentative and afraid. Rafferty played in college until he was 24 years old and played a full year in the AHL before this year. He's 26 years old. He looked brutal in the one game he played. Chatfield looked like a Hall of Famer compared to Rafferty. Vesey is a two time 17 goal scorer in the NHL. Hawryluk actually can do something on the 4th line. Rafferty won't even make an NHL roster next year but you think Green should have played him anyways even though he can't defend to save his life. That's not on Green. That's on the player. Why should Rafferty get another chance with Vancouver when at 26 years old he hasn't even learned the basics of how to defend against NHL calibre players?

I think he may get one more shot on a 2 way contract. But my gut is telling me he's going to Europe...

What makes you think a top 10 pick like Podkolzin who’s already played 2 years of pro hockey against men is going to take 2-3 years to crack the top 6? Didn’t Hoglander, a 2nd round pick in the same draft and who is about 25 pounds lighter, crack the top 6 in his rookie year? Podkolzin is a much bigger player than Hoglander. And has more talent, which is why he was a top 10 pick. Benning already stated he will be in the top 6 as soon as he arrives in Vancouver. There is nothing to suggest any of that has changed.

Didn’t Green play Jack Rathbone in 8 games last year? Wasn’t he in effect an unknown rookie at the time? Rafferty was in Vancouver pretty much the whole year last year practicing with the big club on the taxi squad. The fact he only played one game with Vancouver tells you everything you need to know about his NHL future.

Vasily Podkolzin | #92 | RW
Elias Pettersson replied to GoldenAlien's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
His hands and feet are massive. He's probably still growing. I'm thinking he's gonna come to training camp at 6'3" 215 pounds... By the way Petey likes Mrs. Podkolzin... -
He looks to be similar to Panarin, coming over at 24 and being a top line player right away. I can see why he wants a short term deal. If he hits 90-95 points in a couple years he will want $11 million+...

Interesting playoff stat
Elias Pettersson replied to Bertuzzipunch's topic in General Hockey Discussion
True. But the 20% that the coach is responsible for could be enough to change the play of Virtanen so he’s useful enough to be a good contributor at the very least on the 3rd line. He did score 18 goals last year with minimal power play time. The biggest issue with Jake is his off the ice antics. He’s too immature to be an NHL player. We don’t know what happened to him when he was a kid, how he was in high school, his family life growing up. Lots of variables. -
-
That would be overkill really. I’m okay with adding Brent Sopel to the deal.
-
When does Kaprizov become a UFA? We can always wait it out. Maybe Kaprizov and Tryamkin can come back together.
-
That’s a pretty wide spectrum. Raymond, Ballard and a 2nd?
-
Kaprizov has played his whole life in Russia expect for this past year. He's similar to Tryamkin really. He probably didn't adapt too well to North America and misses his home. I'm sure $6 million a year would bring him back though. I'd play him with Podkolzin. They would be dynamic together. He would come to Vancouver to play with Podz. I wonder what Minny would want back...
-
Never. Sweden is too cold. I love Vancouver. It is my home forever...

Why would we trade Rathbone when his equal partner at Harvard is up for the Norris trophy this year? Talking about selling low. This kid could be better than Hughes. And why would Colorado trade for another Dman who is under 200 pounds? They already have Byram in the pipeline who plays the left side. They got abused by Vegas so Coloraod should be looking to get bigger not smaller. Robert Thomas is a nice player so not sure why the Blues would want to give him up for Virtanen. They probably protect Thomas and don't even expose him.

Interesting playoff stat
Elias Pettersson replied to Bertuzzipunch's topic in General Hockey Discussion
Well we can agree that the player represents 80% and the coaching is 20%. The % you want to use for intangibles is subjective, but at the end of the day the player is responsible for 80% of the work and the coach 20%. That was really the essence of my post. -

Talent is 80%. Without the talent you cannot win. However, the extra 20% provided by the coaching is what turns an average team into a great team. I believe the Canucks have most of the talent in place. They need to plug a few holes. Then they are at the 80%. The other 20% will come from Green and Brad Shaw and how Shaw will work his defensive system to get the most out of the talent we currently have. -
What is the main position target the canucks need
Elias Pettersson replied to Bertuzzipunch's topic in Canucks Talk
Defence is the biggest need for Vancouver. They already have a Vezina trophy caliber goalie in Demko. They have some pieces in place on defence in Hughes, Rathbone and Juolevi, but need to surround them with much bigger players similar to the final four teams in this year's playoffs. Myers has the size so he can stay. But everyone else I think needs to go. I would trade Schmidt if a good offer came our way. Secondarily we need help up the middle. A 3C and 4C are needed. If Miller converts full time to a 3C then we need a 4C who can play a fast and aggressive game like Highmore, Motte and Lockwood. The wingers will work themselves out but if we can go out and get someone cheap like an Appleton I would do that deal depending on the cost. -

Elias Pettersson replied to Bertuzzipunch's topic in General Hockey Discussion
If you look at the defence of the 4 remaining teams you will notice that they all have guys who are huge. Montreal has Chiarot, Edmundson, Petry, Weber and Merrill who are all 6'3" or bigger. Vegas has Pietrangelo, Theodore, Whitecloud, McNabb and Holden who are all 6'2" or bigger. Tampa has Hedman, Cernak, Sergachev, Rutta, and Savard who are all 6'2" or bigger. And the Islanders have Pulock, Mayfield, Pelech, and Dobson who are all 6'2" or bigger. It is not a coincidence that these teams are all in the final four. Not to mention all 4 teams have top end goaltending. Price, Fleury, Vasilevskiy and Varlamov are all Vezina trophy caliber goalies and two of them are Vezina finalists for 2021. Grubauer was also a Vezina finalist this year but Colorado's defence is not the size of the final four teams. They only have 2 defencemen that weigh over 200 pounds. They really missed Erik Johnson. The path to win the Stanley Cup starts in goal and works out towards the defence, then the centres and then the wingers.
