  1. Same reason they traded for Marian Gaborik and Anders Nilsson this year. They trade a contract that counts against the cap for a contract that can be used to exceed the cap by that amount. They still have to pay Ferland so the benefit to Tampa isn’t money saved it’s simply to be able to exceed the cap legally.
  2. They can trade a contract that is already being counted against the cap for a contract that is on LTIR. With an LTIR contract you can exceed the cap by the amount of the contract. That's how Tampa were able to stay under the cap this season and why they now have a $100 million payroll for the playoffs when the cap doesn't count. Kucherov was on LTIR the entire season and came off LTIR just in time for the first playoff game. It's called "legal" circumvention of the cap, I call it fraud to the highest degree.
  3. They currently have a $100 million payroll in the playoffs...
  4. Probably because he's not very good at defending. Also, would you want a guy making $4.25 million on your 3rd line?
  5. I was against the Pearson signing, you can look it up. We traded for Toffoli because at 28 he wasn't a bum yet. But he could be at 30 or 31. Same with Pearson. The difference is Pearson will be on our 3rd line in a year or two to be used in a checking role and provide secondary offence. Toffoli on the other hand will be needed by Montreal to play top line minutes in order to get maximum value. Toffoli can't play on a 3rd line, Pearson can. So at least Benning played it smartly in that regard.
  6. The top Canuck players are all young. Hoglander was a rookie. Podkolzin hasn’t even arrived yet. Pettersson was injured half the year. Boeser got 23 goals. Only 5 short of Toffoli’s once in a lifetime year. Bo was at 19 goals. Miller was his usual self almost at an 80 point pace. Are you suggesting these are bad numbers? Not to mention they all got COVID with 20 games left to play. I’m not concerned at all with the forward group moving forward. Same with the goaltending. Demko is already better than Price. It’s the defence that needs fixing. That’s why Benning brought in Brad Shaw. He’s a defensive guru. Let’s see what Shaw does with the overall defensive play of the team next year. I have a feeling we are gonna be much better. Adding a couple big bodies at the back will also help. Let’s see what Benning has up his sleeve. I can guarantee you we won’t be missing Toffoli next year. You will even forget he exists.
  7. I wouldn't use this season to judge any player. Next year we will see where everybody is at. As for Toffoli, I am sure he will go back to reality and be a 20 goal scorer next year, I don't think it is possible to have a renaissance at 29 years old and all of a sudden go from 20 to 50 goals. Don't think it has every happened in hockey history. A huge mistake is trading a top pairing Dman for the next French superstar who may be out of the league in 2 years, not trading for a rental at the deadline to make a playoff push and then not re-sign him in the summer. But I guess we differ on what the definition of a huge mistake is so I'll leave it at that.
  8. So does this mean that Toffoli sucks now? I guess playing against weak opposition all year padded his stats just a little bit. I'm sure he will go back to being a 20 goal scorer next year and not on pace for 50...
  9. Maybe you should wait to see if either actually play an NHL game before you declare the trade a "Benning blunder"...
  10. Dahlen sucks. And I now a little bit about Swedish hockey players...
  11. Ideally we would want to get a new partner for Hughes and new partner for Schmidt. Those 2 guys could be our #1 PK unit. Then Myers and either Juolevi or Rathbone run the 2nd unit PK. So Benning really needs to acquire 2 Dmen this summer unless he plans on re-signing both Edler and Hamonic. Re-signing one of those guys is a real possibility, I'm hoping he just doesn't re-sign both as I'd like to see some new additions to the D coprp.
  12. Makar and Heiskanen have better fundamentals when it comes to the defensive side of the game. Hughes still needs to get there. Those two also have better playing partners which help as well. Benning needs to get a top pairing defensive Dman for Hughes, that should be his first priority this offseason. Agreed on Dahlin. When he is fully grown he will be the size of Ohlund with much better mobility and a better skillset. I think Dahlin wins the Norris trophy multiple times in his career. Hopefully he gets out of Buffalo soon so he can maximize his potential in the NHL.
  13. Yeah Hughes was a -10 playing with Tanev in his rookie season but then shot up to -24 playing with Hamonic and Benn. So the partner he plays with does make a huge difference. If you partner Hughes with Cernak or Mayfield he may even become a + player.
  14. Looking at the roster I don't think either Schmidt or Myers should be on the top pairing killing penalties so if we are going to get a partner for Hughes then that guy would have to be the top pairing guy on the PK. You don't have to have two players playing together as a unit and also have them as your #1 PK unit. Mayfied and Pelech are the top pairing PK unit for the Islanders, but Mayfield plays with Leddy and Pelech plays with Pulock. Yes if Hughes's partner is playing the PK without Hughes then they would in essence play the same amount of minutes, just like Leddy and Mayfield play the same amount of minutes while Leddy runs the PP and Mayfield kills penalties.
  15. I think Hamilton would be a great fit in Toronto. He would push their cap problems beyond repair for the next decade...
  16. I think you'd want the guy paired with Hughes to be your top penalty killer, so they should be playing the same amount of minutes. Hughes's ideal partner would also be out there in the last 5 minutes of a game protecting a lead. Guys like Cernak and Mayfield are playing 22-24 minutes a night with no PP time. That's the type of Dman we want paired with Hughes.
  17. It wasn't his back that made him retire. His back was fine. He was diagnosed with a rare gene disorder which made him weak and couldn't allow him to play hockey... Hodgson didn’t quit hockey because of a bad back, nor did he stop playing on his own volition. He left the NHL after his doctor told him he had a rare disorder. Hodgson was forced to retire due to complications from a mutation on his ryanodine receptor 1 (RYR-1) gene. “My final year of playing, I was having some severe symptoms, I was having trouble breathing,” he said. “I was blacking out. My muscles were extremely tight, my whole body was just shaking. RYR-1 is a form of muscle disease, which affects people differently. Hodgson says he hopes to “shine light” on RYR-1 in the documentary. Ex-Canucks Cody Hodgson explains reason he retired in documentary | Offside (dailyhive.com)
  18. You could be right. Leddy doesn't play on the PK but he plays on the PP. Mayfield can't do that. Exposing Leddy instead of Mayfield makes sense from a salary cap point of view and also given the fact that Leddy will be a UFA in a year. But the question still stands. Who replaces Leddy in the top 4? They don't have anyone on the left side that can do that. And if they go out and get someone in free agency it will cost them the same amount as Leddy anyways, so they won't be saving any cap space. Mayfield is also a UFA in 2 years and will be looking for a huge payday from what he makes now, so the Islanders either have to pay Leddy next year or pay Mayfield the year after. The Islanders look like they can win the Cup this year. If not then next year they have a shot. Their defence right now is one of the best in the league and will only get better with Dobson improving. Their best bet is to pay off Seattle and try and keep both Leddy and Mayfield.
  19. I think Buffalo just has to bite the bullet. They need to trade Eichel for whatever they can get, trade Reinhart for picks and prospects and buyout Skinner and Okposo and start from scratch. Risto should be in the trade block as well or they will lose him for nothing. They will be in rebuild mode for years.
  20. Buffalo deserves everything they get. They screwed us in the 1970 draft and were able to build a great team around Perreault. Payback is a bi**h. They now have to suffer with losing the McJesus sweepstakes and also getting a minimal return for their consolation prize, Eichel. Not to mention that Skinner will be screwing them for the next 6 years. Couldn't be happier for our cousins really...
