Meh, McAvoy is two years older. Just wait until Hughes is 23 and learns how to play defense, he will be unstoppable really... We could always do a Rathbone for Carlo deal. Kill two birds with one stone. -

I don't think having big defencemen is a trend. It's been that way since I can remember dating back to the 80's. Here is a snapshot of the Edmonton Oilers defencemen when they won the Cup in 1985. Do you see any small defencemen on that roster? Even Coffey was 205 pounds... -

This is true. But the same can be said when you are defending on your off side and the puck is against the boards in your own end. You would be on your backhand instead of your forehand trying to get the puck out with an opposing forward on your back. -

No. He's a liability on his strong side, I can only imagine how worse he would be playing the right side as a left shot. It would confuse the heck out of him. It changes the whole dynamic of defending when you are on your off side. Schmidt can do it effectively but he's been playing primarily on the right side for awhile now. -

No I don't think Buffalo or Philly make that deal. However, Boston does that deal any day of the week. They would pair Hughes with Carlo. Would be a great top pairing. I've proposed getting Carlo to Vancouver many times to pair with Hughes. -

I'd do Hughes for Dahlin but I know alot of people on here wouldn't. He had 44 points as an 18 year old. Better than Hedman and Ekblad. Hedman never even hit 40 points until he was 24. Dahlin had a bad year this year but he's playing on Buffalo and the whole team sucked. He could be the same size as Ohlund in a couple of years and still has huge upside as he is still a year younger than Hughes. I predict he will win the Norris Trophy in the next 5 years. Maybe even before Hughes. -

Tryamkin will be 40 by the time his wife allows him to come to North America so he probably won't be that effective anymore... -

True that. My point still stands though. Leddy is in the top 4 LHD. They have no one to replace him… -

Leddy Pulock Pelech Dobson That's a much better top 4 in my opinion. I think they need to package Mayfield with Ladd to free up cap space. Dobson is going to be a stud. They are not trading him just to keep Mayfield. -
There is always the possibility that we trade Hughes, especially if Rathbone ends up being a similar player to Fox. The return would have to be spectacular though. A top RHD and a top 6 forward plus a top prospect.

$5.5 million. The problem is who do you replace him with? If you expose Leddy and he gets taken then your top 3 Dmen are all right shots plus you have Pelech. So who plays with Pulock? Pulock Pelech Dobson Mayfield Mayfield ends up on your 3rd pairing and you don't have anyone to play top minutes with Pulock. Good luck finding a replacement for Leddy that is cheap. A top pairing Dman even in free agency will cost you over $5 million so you are not saving any cap space. If you keep Leddy and trade Mayfield with someone like Ladd that would eliminate the cap issue, and you have your top 4 Dmen intact: Leddy Pulock Pelech Dobson -
Hey we agree again!! Keeping Leddy makes more sense because Dobson will move up like you said into a top 4 role paired with Pelech. Leddy/Pulock is their top pairing so I can't see how they would let that go if they are in win now mode. I understand the cap problems they have but who is going to pair with Pulock in the top 4 if they let Leddy go? The more likely scenario is they try to move Ladd and adding Mayfield as the sweetener should do the trick. I'm not sure the Canucks could swing that deal with the cap space, but if we were to give them Woo as compensation and we buy out Virtanen and Holtby it could work. Maybe Eriksson retires. If that happened this deal is an easy one to make as Ladd would certainly have us on his list of teams to trade with.

Losing Leddy or Mayfield would be a huge loss. Leddy had 31 points in 56 games. Pulock was the next closest at 17. They may very well leave Leddy unprotected. But I am not sure how that helps them in the short term when they are in win now mode. Maybe they make a deal with Seattle to not pick either guy.
