  1. Erik Johnson did the same thing as a #1 overall in 2006. He ended up signing with St. Louis regardless...
  2. Yes their window is now. That's why they will protect Leddy over Mayfield. They need to get something for Mayfield if he's left unprotected. Woo would be for their future. Maybe they give something to Seattle so they don't pick Mayfield. That could be an option for the Islanders as well. I do agree they need cap space so Ladd may be involved in a deal to free up space. I just don't see how the Islanders can leave Leddy unprotected and then get taken by Seattle. It frees up cap space but at the cost of one of their top 2 Dmen. If they are in win now mode I don't think they expose Leddy. He was their #1 point producer on D in the regular season at 31 points. Pulock was a distant second at 17. They could also dangle Clutterbuck to free up cap space and add a sweetener to get rid of Komarov.
  3. I don’t think Colorado takes Juolevi for Graves as Juolevi also has to be protected. We can use Woo in a trade for Mayfield. That makes sense as Woo doesn’t need protection. I’d rather go after a UFA like Olesiak to fill Edler’s spot and keep Juolevi. Juolevi has more upside than Woo. Adding Olesiak and Mayfield would solve our problems on defence in terms of added size and truculence. Those would be two bold moves by Benning that would make us into a playoff team and very tough to play against. I’d hate to lose Woo but he’s really one of our only few trade chips to get someone like Mayfield as he doesn’t need ED protection. I trust Benning can find another Woo in this draft for the future. We need to find a partner for Hughes now.
  4. New York Islanders vs. Montreal Canadiens in the Stanley Cup final. Kinda like the old days. I like it.
  5. I just wanna see Weber destroy Reaves with an open ice hit. If that happens I’ll be happy. I wonder if Reaves would have the balls to lay his knee on Weber’s neck if he was down on the ice.
  6. Hi Jan, So you are in effect trading Schmidt to fit Dumba. First off you have to find a team to trade with for Schmidt. What is the return going to be? Secondly, you have to ask yourself is Dumba a big upgrade on Schmidt? Thirdly, what assets do we have to give up to get Dumba? I actually don’t think Dumba is an upgrade on Schmidt. But even if he was it is a slight upgrade and not worth the hassle of having to go through the 3 scenarios I just mentioned. Schmidt is not the problem on D. Finding a partner for Hughes is. Hamonic could be a short term fit but I think Benning needs to be aggressive this summer and make a trade or two to get a better partner for Hughes and also add another Dman if Edler doesn’t come back. Graves is a good player and can slide into that 2nd pair with Schmidt. However, I’d rather spend the assets needed to get Graves to try and get a legit partner for Hughes. I’d target Scott Mayfield. I think he’s just as good as Graves, a bit tougher and is a RHD who can play with Hughes.
  7. Hard pass on Dumba. We already have Schmidt on that 2nd pairing and Dumba isn't a fit with Hughes.
  8. The more I think about it the more I feel McTavish will be long gone before we pick...
  9. This is true. If the scouts determine he is indeed ready for the NHL next year then he is probably not available at #9 anyways. He will go top 5.
  10. There is not much out there on the UFA front. Hamilton, Savard and Larsson are the only 3 legit RHD that are UFA's, but none bring the truculence of a Chara or Weber. Hamonic may be the short term solution. But I'd rather Benning be aggressive and use the expansion draft to target a RHD that another team may lose for nothing. My dream is Erik Cernak, he'd be the gold standard of RHD to play with Hughes. Don't think it's gonna happen though. I think Scott Mayfield could be a good target. He's playing 22-24 minutes a night in the playoffs and is 28 and on a cheap contract. Depends what the Islanders do in the expansion draft. They have to choose between protecting him or Nick Leddy. Tough choice.
  11. McTavish comes from a hockey family. Great bloodlines. From what I hear he is the complete opposite of Jake. Jake had all the tools to be a great NHL player, but unfortunately he had no toolbox. The decisions he has made on and off the ice have unfortunately ruined his career.
  12. Rooster and Beagle won't be around by the time McTavish makes the NHL. If we can draft McTavish and add guys like Appleton and Trenin to our core it would make our forward group complete. Miller Pettersson Boeser Hoglander Horvat Podkolzin Pearson McTavish Appleton Highmore Trenin Lockwood Gadjovich MacEwen The top 3 lines are set. The 4th line has speed to burn and Trenin would be a physical force up the middle. And we'd have Gadjovich and MacEwen who can play on the 3rd or 4th line for added truculence when needed. I really think if we draft Mctavish and then add a couple cheap young players in Appleton and Trenin our forward group is pretty much complete. It's the defence we really need to work on. We need to get a top pairing RHD to play with Hughes. That is the biggest challenge Benning will face in the next year or two.
  13. Pastrnak came from Sweden so he was eligible to play in the AHL the same year he was drafted. He did do that and played 25 games in the AHL before being called up and playing the rest of the year in the NHL. He basically was afforded the opportunity to showcase his skills against men prior to making the jump to the NHL. McTavish would either have to make the Canucks right out of camp or go back to junior. He wouldn't be able to play in the AHL like Pastrnak which is a huge difference and a non comparable really.
  14. I think McTavish will be ready to go in a year when he’s 19. He’s already got good size. He may be 215 pounds at training camp in 2022. I think he’s the exact player we need. We already have smallish forwards who can score. We need some bigger bodies up front.
  15. We aren't rebuilding anymore. Our young core is set. We need to add some bigger players with more truculence via trade or free agency. We have already most of our top 9 in place as well as a starting goalie and perhaps two high end offensive Dmen. Right now Benning needs to draft for the future to replace guys like Pearson, Miller, Myers and Schmidt who are all pushing 30 or older. The pieces we are missing cannot be drafted as they would take years to develop. The pieces we need, a partner for Hughes, a 4C, a winger and another Dman can be acquired via trade or free agency. Benning said he will be busy this summer. I believe him.
  16. Yes I agree the Canucks do need to get bigger. That's why I like McTavish at 9. He will be 210-215 pounds in the NHL. Same with Podkolzin. I'd like to get a bigger 4th line centre as well. The defence also needs work. We need to add a Jamie Olesiak and Scott Mayfield to the back end. Benning needs to go hard after some bigger players with some more truculence. Colorado got pushed around at the end of the day by Vegas. Benning needs to see that and counter punch. Benning was with Boston when they won the Cup so I am sure he understands this.
  17. Horvat went back to London after he was drafted. He came back the following year at 19 and made the team. I can see McTavish doing the same thing. If we draft McTavish I don't mind signing Sutter to a one year deal to fill the void unless they move Miller to 3C.
  18. Not when you're 18. Only top draft picks step in at 18 and contribute. 9th overall picks do not go immediately to the NHL. I don't think there has been one 9th overall pick in NHL history that has jumped immediately into the NHL at 18.
  19. Not collecting assets? Are you kidding me? Petey, Huggy, Brock, Hogs, Podz, Demko, Miller, Rathbone, Juolevi, Woo, DiPietro all say hi. The Canucks have some of the best young talent right now in the entire NHL...
  20. Nah, he goes back for another year. I don't want him wasted in the press box like what happened to Horvat and Virtanen and playing 7 minutes a night on the 4th line. He's better off going back to junior for another year and playing big minutes on the top line.
  21. Really, I didn't know that. Michigan will be the favourites for sure. All 4 of those players will certainly go back to make a run at an NCAA Championship before they move to the NHL.
  22. Madden is going to end up being a fringe 3rd or 4th liner in the NHL. Those types of players can be acquired very easily via trade or free agency. The average 2nd round pick (unless it's a Benning pick) doesn't even make the NHL. So I'm sorry but your hypothesis that Benning made a worse trade than trading away a top pairing defenceman makes no sense. You cannot acquire a top pairing Dman in the NHL unless you give up major assets (Madden and a 2nd aren't major assets), or you draft them. Montreal drafted Sergachev and gave him away for peanuts. Drouin may not even be around in 2 years. One of the worst hockey trades in NHL history. And you're comparing that to giving away a 2nd round pick and a fringe NHL'er. At some point you just need to give it up and understand what you are saying is wrong and no one really agrees with you on this point. Also, Benning was quoted as saying that the reason why he traded for Toffoli was he wanted to give his team a "boost" to make a playoff push with Boeser being out of the lineup. At the end of the day the young players on the team enjoyed a great playoff run and Demko established himself as a bone fide NHL starter. His confidence grew tremendously because of what he accomplished in the playoffs last year. It made him what he is today, a 5x5 goalie who will be a Vezina trophy winner at some point in his career. You can't underestimate what making the playoffs and going a few rounds does to team confidence in the young players. Petey, Bo, Huggy, Brock and Demko all got to experience some serious playoff hockey. That will certainly help them moving forward when we make a playoff push next year and gives them the confidence they need to know that they can play in the big dance and do well.
  23. I don't think anyone in this draft will be playing in the NHL next year. Michigan will have a powerhouse team next year with Power, Beniers and Johnson. They have a great shot at winning the NCAA Championship.
  24. If he takes a full year off and is doing the same treatments as Crosby then there is a chance he comes back. Crosby came back with no side effects and has played for years afterwards. Same with Willie Mitchell. The Canucks thought he was done and he ended up playing 5 more years and won a Cup. Every player is different, so who knows for sure. But the fact we haven't heard anything about Ferland in months tells me he is recovering and rehabbing like heck to come back I think. Would love to see him on the team next year. I'd play him with Petey and Brock and move Miller to 3C. Trade for Mason Appleton and our top 9 would be complete with very little to give up in return.
