This draft will be similar to 2019 where Podkolzin fell to us at 10. We will get a very good player at 9. Benning has already said he likes 9 guys, so he will get one of them.

Miller as a 3C is the most likely scenario given how hard it is to a acquire one. I’m hoping we draft McTavish to be that long term 3C solution so Miller can move back to the wing in a couple of years if we are able to re-sign him. If we can’t then at least we have our long term 3C in McTavish. I would target a winger to play with Miller. I like Podkolzin playing with Bo. Mason Appleton would be cheap. Not sure what it would take to get him, but acquiring Appleton at a $900k salary would allow us to go out and get a decent 4C and also maybe get another LW to replace MIller on the Petey line. I’m not big at bringing Sutter back as a 4C. I’d rather have someone like Motte or Highmore equivalent with a little more truculence. I don’t think Ottawa is going to trade Nick Paul, he’s a very good 3C and is in their long term plans. Not a big fn of Sheahan. Yakov Trenin would be my choice as a 4C. He could hang out with Podkolzin. My dream is for Ferland to come back and play with Petey and Brock. It’s a dream but sometimes dreams do come true.

(Discussion) How bad is Quinn Hughes defensively?
Elias Pettersson replied to BigTramFan's topic in Canucks Talk
This is a very good post and observation. I would concur. Hughes overall minutes are much higher at even strength than Hamonic or Benn which means other Dmen were on the ice with him at some point in time. There were many times when I saw Hughes on the ice with Myers or Schmidt. Not so much Edler. But I would say that being on the ice with Myers and Schmidt definitely led to Hughes having a much worse plus/minus than he should have. -
Sakic could have signed Toffoli in the summer. He should have known he would have a career year at 29 and be a force in the playoffs. Instead he traded for Brandon Saad and allowed Nikita Zadorov to get away. With Zadorov and Toffoli the Avs would have certainly won the Cup. I think Sakic has one more year to get his sh*t together. If he doesn’t he should be fired really…

[Proposal] Win/Van
Elias Pettersson replied to Bertuzzipunch's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
He scored the same number of goals in 2019-2020 as Jake Virtanen. So I think a Virtanen for PLD deal would be a totally fair trade… -
I won’t fully accept your apology unless you can convince BFG to change his mind and sign a contract for the Vancouver Canucks…

Toffoli is a GOD in Vancouver now. He can't do any wrong. He is better than McJesus really. We should just dedicate this entire site to Toffoli for the rest of the playoffs as I am sure 90% of the posts will be about him anyways. I'm just going to enjoy watching the Habs play and hopefully win a Cup for Alex Burrows. If Toffoli ends up winning the Conn Smythe I will be very happy for him. I'm not going to engage in any more Toffoli discussion as it relates to the Canucks.

You said prospect I said pick. The two are interchangeable and I didn't even notice the mistake, so I wasn't trying to create an argument at all. Was there a better goalie option than Holtby? I don't think there was but I'd have to go back and check who else was available. It is easy to say Demko would have been fine on his own but imagine the backlash if Benning let's Markstrom walk and then Demko sh*ts the bed this year. That would have been far worse than letting Toffoli walk for nothing. The contract for Loui wasn't bad on day one. People were happy that the Sedins were getting a 30 goal scorer who was also Swedish to play with them. Just like Toffoli is having a career year at 29, Loui went in the complete opposite direction from day one and basically forgot how to play hockey. Hindsight is 20/20. All the contracts signed that summer were bad, not just Loui's. As for Roussel and Beagle, I didn't mind the signings or the $3 million AAV, I would have preferred they were only 3 year deals for both instead of 4, but they probably wouldn't have come to Vancouver for a 3 year deal.

The only reason Toffoli was a Canuck in the first place was because of Benning. He was hurt in the playoffs and didn't contribute much. Now that he is gone and playing the best hockey of his career it is Benning's fault he is no longer here. Like I said in an earlier post Benning's biggest mistake was trading for Toffoli in the first place. If the trade had never occurred we wouldn't be talking about Toffoli at all right now.

Demko was still unproven. The logical move to make was to get a veteran who has won a Cup as a backup in case Demko didn't pan out. Benning had to pay up to get that veteran goalie. There wasn't a cheaper option in free agency with a better resume. In terms of dumping a pick to clear cap space, he just finished dumping a 2nd round pick and a prospect for Toffoli, I can only imagine the uproar if he traded a 1st round pick to dump Loui or Roussel, which is what it would have taken to dump them.

At the time of the trade it was a good idea as Boeser was hurt and Benning was trying to make the playoffs. With a little bit of luck we did manage to squeak into the play in round and ended up winning 2 rounds and going 7 games with Vegas in round 3. Toffoli wasn't a huge part of that success as he was hurt in the playoffs. Boeser came back to full health and Benning had a decision to make. He ended up qualifying Virtanen instead of letting him walk for free and he traded for Schmidt to fill the hole left by Tanev. That took up the majority of our cap space. He did try to go after OEL which of course would have made our defence even better, but luckily that deal did not go through as his cap hit would have crippled us for the next 6 years. The other thing to consider is we traded for Toffoli prior to COVID. COVID effectively destroyed any chance of the cap going up. Prior to COVID they were talking about the cap going up by a few million so Benning probably thought that re-signing Toffoli, Tanev and Markstrom wouldn't be that difficult. Unfortunately because of COVID and through no fault of Benning the cap remained flat and he got stuck in a bad situation. Bergevin trading Sergachev for Drouin was just a stupid trade giving up on a top young prospect. At least Benning had an excuse for what happened with Toffoli. It wasn't stupid to try and make the playoffs and trade some youth and prospects in order to do it. GM's do that all the time. At the end of the day we got Boeser back to full heath which is the reason we traded for Toffoli in the first place and defence was a priority, so Benning didn't make an offer to Toffoli and he went to Montreal. No one, and I repeat no one could have expected Toffoli to have a career year at age 29 on a new team. I'm sure you didn't expect that either. It is what it is. The trade for Toffoli and then not re-signing him looks real bad right now because we let him walk for nothing, but at the time of the deal it looked like a good move. Hindsight is 20/20. We can spend the next year talking about Toffoli or we can move on and see what Benning has up his sleeve for the summer.

I agree with this. Bergevin looks like a genius right now but he has made some horrible moves in the past. He's been around longer than Benning and when you are around that long you will make some big mistakes but also make some big hits. Bergevin is the one who traded Sergachev for Drouin. I think that is worse than Benning letting Toffoli go in free agency. His drafting hasn't been that great over the years either. But you have to give him credit for the moves he has made over the last couple of years that have really turned the Montreal franchise around. Shea Weber, Josh Anderson, Nick Suzuki, Joel Edmundson and of course Toffoli, just to name a few off the top of my head. He deserves alot of credit and Montreal is lucky that they had the patience to keep him around. Aquilini seems to have the same patience as the Montreal ownership with Benning. Maybe Benning will turn things around as well, starting this summer. It's going to be a big summer for Benning. He needs to hit on a couple trades and free agents to take Vancouver into the playoffs next year.

Awww, I love the Monday morning quarterbacks who love to bring up the old posts. Of course you knew Toffoli was going to be a star in the playoffs and score the overtime winning goal right? I mean it was so apparent when he only had those 2 assists how he was going to break out right after I posted my comments. Can you tell me what the lotto numbers will be for Friday as well since you can predict the future?
