Buying out Johnson would be ugly, he'd be on the books for 6 years. And they would still be over the cap. They could trade Palat or Killorn in a hockey trade. I guess if they are determined enough to keep Cernak and Foote there is the buyout route. They will be sacrificing their future but their window is now so I guess it would be worth it.

So July 27 is the date then. That is after both drafts so we will know by then what the decision is. Hopefully the Police report comes out prior to that date so the Canucks can have certainty either way. I'm thinking Jake is gone either way but if his criminal case is dismissed then at least the Canucks can try and get something for him. If he is charged with sexual assault then his contract gets terminated immediately and his NHL career is effectively over.

Tampa used LTIR to perfection this past year to keep all of their young star players. They may not have that option next year. The GM can say whatever he wants, but at the end of the day if Tampa needs to clear cap space they may need to add a guy like Cernak or Foote in a cap dump to clear space to be cap compliant for 2021. Either they play ball with Seattle and give them picks or prospects to take Johnson, Killorn or Palat or they need to make a hockey trade and use Cernak or Foote as sweeteners for someone to take on Johnson's contract.

This is true. So if Virtanen isn't even charged with a crime then I highly doubt the Canucks try to suspend him or terminate his contract. They are waiting for the Police to finish their investigation before they decide on the next steps. If it carries into August then they will most likely have to make a decision on whether to buy him out or keep him around. I'm thinking they will expose him in the ED and if he isn't taken they will just buy him out, unless the Police investigation is concluded prior to that time and they file charges. Then his contract gets terminated.

Voynov was arrested and spent 2 months in jail. That's a big difference that what is currently the situation with Virtanen. The Virtanen situation is very similar to Patrick Kane back in 2015. Kane was never charged with a crime and the case was dismissed 3 months later. Kane played the entire 2015 season and never missed a game.

Yes this is the one year the Canucks would have at least a shot at Cernak. Tampa has to figure out their cap situation. They are literally playing in the playoffs with a $100 million payroll. I think in order to get Cernak we’d have to take on Johnson’s contract. That way they take $8 million off the books right there. We would need to give them a 2nd round pick so they can get that pick back that they traded away. And a young prospect has to go the other way. They will probably ask for Woo so they get a RHD prospect back who doesn’t need ED protection. I would do that deal. I like Woo but Cernak would be a huge upgrade and would allow us to fill our biggest hole on the team, a young RHD who can play with Hughes for the next decade. If Tampa can’t figure out their cap problem they may go for it. The only issue that remains for Vancouver is how to fit Johnson under the cap for next year. Beagle on LTIR, buying out Holtby and Virtanen. Not re-signing Edler or Hamonic. Sending Eriksson and Roussel to Abbotsford. It would still be tight. With Cernak on board we’d have to expose either Schmidt or Myers. So I think the best way to fit Johnson under the cap is to give Seattle a pick or prospect to either take Schmidt or Myers. We could then potentially re-sign both Edler and Hamonic to fill the gap. That would be a lot of maneuvering for Benning but at the end of the day it would be worth it if we end up with Cernak and are still able to keep our 9OA pick.

[Discussion] Gabriel Landeskog
Elias Pettersson replied to Elias Pettersson's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Gabriel is only 28. Just sayin... -
Imagine Gabriel playing with Petey. Maybe play Nils on RW. Gabriel would love Vancouver. All Swedish players do really. The Sedin twins could convince him to come I’m sure. Maybe that is why they are in management now. To recruit the best available Swedish players in the world and convince them to come to Vancouver. I am sure Colorado will do everything in their power to re-sign him. He is their captain and Colorado drafted him. Colorado is the only team he has ever played for. And Colorado is a Cup contender. So why would he leave all of that to come to Vancouver? To play with me of course. Landeskog Pettersson Boeser Pearson Horvat Podkolzin Hoglander Miller Appleton Highmore Trenin Lockwood

[Discussion] If exposed would Seattle take Myers
Elias Pettersson replied to goblix's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Hamonic doesn’t provide more than Myers. Myers plays in all situations, Hamonic does not. Also we can protect Myers and simply re-sign Hamonic after the ED as he is a UFA. So re-signing Hamonic has zero affect on who we protect in the ED. That UFA list you provided for available right handed D is pretty underwhelming. You actually forgot to list the best of the bunch which is David Savard. Savard would be an upgrade on Hamonic and can play big minutes with Hughes. The ED is being held before free agency so we won’t know what any of those UFA’s are going to do prior to the ED. So exposing Myers would be a huge risk unless we secure someone like Savard prior to the start of free agency. -

How exactly are we going to pick up another young right handed D? There are none in free agency as they are all old. It would have to be via a trade. Our only trade chips are the 9OA pick, Juolevi and Motte. If Benning moves the first round draft pick then that would change the parameters. That’s the only way I can see Myers being exposed. -

If we are picking up another D prior to expansion than most likely Juolevi is going the other way. Myers is the only right shot defencman we currently have on our roster. Why would Benning give him away? Myers gets a lot of heat around here. But at the end of the day he’s a 6’8” right handed D who can play big minutes if needed and can run a power play and also kill penalties. Seattle would probably take him over Kole Lind or Jonah Gadjovich for that reason. -

Depends who's available to Seattle. Myers could be an option for them. But most likely they will take one of our younger players. And I'm pretty sure Myers will not be exposed in the ED. -
[Proposal] Columbus -Vancouver (proposal)

Why not just keep Schmidt and trade for Brayden McNabb? -
I agree with all of that. I will add that to accelerate the defensive play of Hughes Benning will need to find him a long term partner he can grow with. Someone like Erik Cernak. Makar doesn't need a Cernak because he already is good defensively, but Hughes would be helped tremendously with a guy like Cernak who he can play with for the next decade. I'd go all in to get a partner for Hughes. That should be Benning's #1 priority this summer so he can speed up the development of Hughes and hopefully turn him into a Norris Trophy winner at some point in his career. Makar I think will get there in the next year or two. I'm hoping by age 25 Quinn will be there too.
-
Hughes will get it, the whole family bleeds hockey and Quinn has an excessive amount of pure talent. He just needs a few years in the league to learn the defensive side. He will never be an Alex Edler but with time I think he could be as good as Makar on the defensive side. Makar is a superior player at this point as he has a more well rounded game. But Hughes has the skill and brains to get to Makar's level I think. We will see.
-
Of course he did, he started playing in the NHL at age 18, Hughes didn't play a full season until he was 20. Not sure what you are trying to say here. Hughes has more points on a point per game basis than Dahlin. Dahlin has 107 points in 197 games while Hughes has 97 points in 129 games. On a point per game basis they aren't even close. Hughes is way ahead at this point in his career.
