Dahlin, Tkachuk and Hughes. Those are the top 3 players from the 2018 draft class, not necessarily in that order. We got at the very least a top 3 pick in that draft picking 7th overall. Makar and Pettersson. Those are the top 2 players from the 2017 draft class, not necessarily in that order. We got at the very least a top 2 pick in that draft picking 5th overall. I would say we did very well in those 2 drafts without even a top 4 pick. I would say both of our picks were home runs in the slots that they were taken.

Well I’ve played 165 games in the NHL and I think he was not being totally truthful in his statement. In all seriousness, you can’t prove whether he was lying or not. But the DOPS broke it down quite well when they showed via video evidence that Sheifele had really no intention of playing the puck and stopping the goal and had every intention of making a big hit. The hit was high, it was charging by its very definition and the guy he hit had to be taken off by a stretcher. As for the fairness of the suspension I do agree with you that based on “precedent”, i.e. the suspensions recently given to repeat offenders Wilson and Reaves, the amount of games he got was excessive. I do feel he deserved 2-3 games at minimum. And I also feel that Wilson and Reaves should have been suspended for much more than they received, like for the rest of the playoffs. But the DOPS has never been consistent with their rulings so you can’t expect them to dish out suspensions that are fair and consistent.

[Speculation] Is Schmidt on the move?
Elias Pettersson replied to Me_'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Well Benning may be afraid that Squamfan will organize a new protest in front of Rogers Arena or fly his “Fire Benning” flag all over the City next year if he doesn’t make some major off-season changes so he definitely is under pressure to do something big. -

Loui would still be overpaid at that price. -

Since 2003 Colorado has missed the playoffs 8 times. Since 2003 Vancouver has missed the playoffs 7 times. Since 2003 Colorado has won 8 playoff rounds including this year. Since 2003 Vancouver has also won 8 playoff rounds. Since 2009 Colorado has picked in the top 10 of the draft 7 times, with 1 player selected first overall and 1 player selected second overall. Since 2009 Vancouver has picked in the top 10 of the draft 6 times, with their highest pick being 5th overall. Obviously at this moment Colorado has a much more exciting team and has a chance at winning the Cup this year while Vancouver failed to make the playoffs. But if you go back 17 years the success of both teams up until this year is quite similar. Their draft trajectory is also quite similar with Colorado having the luxury of picking much higher in the draft on several occasions since 2009. I would say Vancouver is around 2 years behind Colorado. The make up of both teams looks similar if you look at the young core of players. MacKinnon makes Colorado a much better team but when he was Pettersson’s age he wasn’t dominating as he is right now. He won the Calder but so did Petey. MacKinnon didn’t become dominant until his 5th year in the league. He also was a #1 overall pick. Vancouver has never had the luxury of picking first overall. Nevertheless let’s see where Petey is at in his 5th year. I’m sure he will be a more exciting and better player than he is right now. At the end of the day the biggest difference for Colorado is they have been able to build a superior team around their young core. Benning hasn’t been able to do that yet. But he has been able to build his young core through the draft similar to Colorado. Let’s see what happens over the next two years. Maybe Benning will surprise us.

Move up to 6 or 8 if Luke Hughes is available
Elias Pettersson replied to CanucksJay's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I'm totally fine with McTavish at 9. I also think there are 9 players that stand out and a drop off at 10. McTavish is right there. He could go as high as 6. If he's there at 9 Benning will run to the podium and select him. There is nothing wrong with his skating that can't be fixed. He's got a great wrist shot and like Miller he could be able to play multiple positons. I like him as a 3C to give us 3 balanced scoring lines, but he could easily move into a 3LW spot if we pick up a 3C somewhere else. I think he could fill out to 215 pounds so he could potentially turn into a power forward type and play with Petey and Brock on LW. -
If it was a clean hit they why did the refs give him a 5 minute major penalty for charging? Charging by its very definition means it was NOT a clean hit. That’s why it’s a penalty. A clean hit would not have garnered a 5 minute major charging penalty. Sometimes I need to take a break from this forum in order to get my IQ level back to normal standards.

I think I would take that deal. Benning will get 2 good players at 25 and 27 and we get a solid 3C for next year. Columbus I think does this as they will be starting their rebuild once they trade Jones. So having 2 top 10 picks this year will be a good start for them. Plus whatever package they can get for Jones. -

I think you take McTavish and run. He has a great family resume and will be a slam dunk top 9 NHL player. Could a a top 6 guy as well but worst case he will be a top notch 3C who can play in all situations. He also could be moved to LW so there is lots of flexibility in his game. Like Benning said it would have to be a really good player to move the pick. Salary cap has to be a factor. Don’t think we are going to add a guy making $6 million+ to move the pick. The cap will be flat for awhile. Now is the time to stock up on young talent and ELC contracts. -

Pronger had a nasty streak. He took a few guys out of the league with his cheap shots. Nobody wanted to go to the front of the net when Pronger was on the ice. I don’t see any nastiness at all from Power. He’s not that type of D even though he is 6’6”. Hedman has much more of a toolbox than Power as well. Power will be a top 4 defenceman in the NHL. But I don’t think he is at the level of a Pronger or a Hedman. -

Power isn’t even in the same stratosphere as Pronger... -
The only player in the NHL worth $11 million is McJesus. Draisaitl and MacKinnon are a bit further down. Anyone else isn't worth more than $8 million. Some players may be getting paid more than that, but they are overpaid, especially with a flat cap for the next few years. You can't win a Cup paying guys $11 million. It's never happened before. You can get away with it with McJesus because he is the equivalent of 2 players. Best thing for the Canucks is to fill all of their holes without handing out huge contracts. A complete team is what is needed to win the Cup. Use the Colorado model. They only have one player earning more than $7 million. Draft your best players, sign them to team friendly deals if you can, and use trades and free agency to fill holes without breaking the bank.
