[Discussion] Mason Appleton
Elias Pettersson replied to Bertuzzipunch's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Stastny and Brossoit are UFA's so they don't even need protection. The choice for Seattle would be Appleton or DeMelo. They probably take Appleton so If they trade Appleton then Seattle only has one choice. So if Winnipeg can get an asset back for Appleton they may do it and just lose DeMelo. -
We don't rely on only 2 players and a Nurse. Benning has stockpiled lots of young talent. We just need some support players to help the kids. Edmonton doesn't have the same support cast that we do. They relied on 2 lines and 4 D for the entire playoffs. They don't have a starting goalie in the system, we do. They don't have any good defencemen other than a Nurse and some unproven prospects. And they don't have any semblance of a 3rd line at all. We will see where we are at as opposed to Edmonton in 2 years. At least we won 2 rounds in the playoffs last year. How many playoff rounds has McDavid won in 6 years in the NHL? One?

Buyout Candidates...Will we see any this year?
Elias Pettersson replied to CanucksJay's topic in Canucks Talk
I'm thinking most high profile players who want to come here will have the moral attitude that they need to play for the money they are receiving and if, in the final year of their contract, they are not even good enough to start for the team's AHL club then they would have the courtesy to consider retirement so that the club that paid you over $33 million dollars for mostly sub par performances can actually move forward and get some cap relief so they can build a competitive roster moving forward. Luongo didn't have an issue with retiring early. So what is Loui's problem? Did his wife spend all of his money? Is his meatball business in Sweden going into the toilet? Is he going to have to go on food stamps next year if he doesn't get his $3 million? Is he not confident enough in his abilities to make up that $3 million by extending his career with another NHL team or by playing in Sweden? If not, why ride the bus in Abbotsford for a year? Is he that selfish of a human being? The fact he would ride a bus and play in the AHL for a year instead of just retiring after collecting more than $33 million from the Canucks for 5 lousy years where he only scored a total of 38 goals says more about the true character of the player than the character of the team. -
Don't think so. Colorado is where they are because McKinnon is on a team friendly deal and they have some ELC's in the lineup. Their highest paid Dman is only at $6 million. Same with Boston. Tampa has major cap issues but have been able to legally maneuver their way around that for the past 2 years. They will use the ED to get some contracts off the books so they can get under the cap next year. But yeah two guys eating up over $20 million in cap space is not a recipe for playoff success.

Virtanen and Holtby will be the buyouts. The combined cap hit for 2021 will be $550,000 so the cap savings will be $6.3 million. We can sign a backup goalie for $1.5 million and Jake can be replaced internally with Podkolzin at $925,000, so the net savings will be over $4 million. With that money saved up on the cap it should allow us to go out and get a partner for Hughes. David Savard at 4x4 would be ideal. -

Highmore was playing with BO. He could even be a legit top 6 winger really... -

There is no way we are losing the centrepiece of the Gaudette trade to Seattle for free. Not gonna happen. -
Gretzky already won 2 Cups at age 24. By age 28 he never won a Cup again. The window isn’t as big as you think. There is not going to be a dynasty in Edmonton. The organization has not been able to do that since the 80’s. You can’t win a Cup with only 2 players and a Nurse. Eventually he will want out and the Oilers will have to trade him. They won’t get full value for him. The longer he stays the lower his value will become. When he’s 29 he will be a UFA. The Oilers will then get nothing for him if they refuse to trade him. The Oilers have 2 years max to do something significant in the playoffs. If they are still getting bounced out in the first round 2 years from now McDavid will want out.
-
He will leave eventually. Luckily they have a cap now or else he would already be gone to LA or New York. But if he wants to cement his legacy he will need to win a few Cups. He knows this. He is not going to play the better part of his career with a team that has no chance at a Cup. He will demand a trade eventually. Two years max.
-
The Oilers will never get full value for McDavid. Just like the Oilers would have never gotten full value if they had traded Gretzky at age 24. At age 28 they got decent value for him, but LA still won that trade, both on and off the ice. Best thing for the Oilers would be to get a top 6 player, two top prospects, 2 or 3 first round picks and of course lots of cap space so that they can go out and get a couple quality UFA's. Build the team around Draisaitl. They will never win a Cup with only 2 players and a Nurse on the back end. Smith will be 40 next year. They need to add 6-8 quality players and build a team.

Expansion draft: A golden opportunity for the Canucks

Highmore has all the tools to be a very effective 4th line player, effectively replacing Motte. He's on a cheap contract as well. Not sure Motte gets protected as he will be a UFA in a year and is still getting over a concussion. Highmore and MacEwen are guys you want to have on your 4th line. Lind didn't impress me at all and Benning is looking for more speed and skill on the 3rd line to make it a scoring line. So there is no real fit for a guy like Lind as I don't see him being a 4th line player. Lind could also be packaged in a deal to get another player. -

I’m thinking Lind will be the guy as well. Benning will protect Highmore and Gadjovich hasn’t shown anything yet at the NHL level. Lind has had 2 good seasons in the AHL and can play multiple positions. I think Benning wants a speedier 3rd line and Lind’s skating is only average so I don’t think he gets protected. -

I do agree that if we can get a stud RHD or top 6 winger in the 24-26 age range for our first round pick this year I would do it. Problem is what players are available? Reinhart is a possibility. Not sure who else would be available. -

Quinn Hughes and Jack Rathbone disagree with you... -
He has stopped. Marky 6x6 is now playing in Calgary. Demko 5x5 is playing in Vancouver. Injury prone Tanev is also in Calgary and Hamonic is a UFA so we have an option to upgrade on that position. Virtanen and Holtby will be bought out, Beagle will end up on LTIR along with Ferland, and Eriksson I believe has a handshake agreement to retire. Roussel can be the 13th forward for a year. That pretty much takes care of all the bad contracts. Moving forward I think Benning will try and trade for players in the 24-26 age range.

Expansion draft: A golden opportunity for the Canucks
Elias Pettersson replied to Rudo's topic in Canucks Talk
Tampa isn't protecting McDonaugh over Cernak. McDonaugh is totally safe as Seattle won't be taking on that contract. Tampa will go 4x4 and protect Hedman, Sergachev, Cernak and Foote as well as Stamkos, Kucherov, Point and Cirelli. Seatlle will most likely take a guy like Palat who only has one year left on his contract. Or they could make a deal with Tampa to take Johnson or Killorn with an added draft pick. Also, you don't trade a top 10 pick for a guy like Cernak. Guys like him can be found in the 2nd round. Both Cernak and Brandon Carlo were drafted in the 2nd round. Benning has to find a guy like that in this draft. And then until that player develops Benning can get a UFA to fill the position of partnering Hughes with someone like David Savard or just re-signing Hamonic to a short term deal. The other option is to go all in on a guy like Seth Jones. If he doesn't sign an extension this summer then most likely Columbus trades him before losing him for free. I'd give up this year's first plus a top prospect for Jones. -

Not sure LTIR is the remedy in that case. Most likely the Canucks could have grounds to terminate his contract. However the more likely scenario is they use a buyout on him which will only amount to a $50,000 cap hit for 2021.
