[Signing] Canucks re-sign Tanner Pearson
Elias Pettersson replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Exactly. That is why I wanted Benning to save his ammo for the summer to see if he could work out a deal for Cernak. Obviously we'd have to take back cap space. Now we have none. -
[Signing] Canucks re-sign Tanner Pearson

Oh God... This ONLY makes sense if Benning has a pre-arrangement for Loui to retire. Let's just pray that is the case. -
Yes. Our priority is to get a legit 3C and a partner for Hughes. We have lots of wingers coming up that Benning has already drafted. And if we need a 3rd line winger I am sure one will be available via free agency this summer at a COVID special discount. There will be lots of available talent on free agency this summer with the flat cap. Lots of teams needing to shed salary for next year. We will have over $20 million coming off the books this summer as well as the opportunity to buyout a couple of other players if Aquilini agrees, which could give us another $6 million in cap space. Obviously Demko, Petey and Hughes will eat up a majority of that cap space but I think Benning will have enough left over to at least fill one of our two biggest needs.

Hoglander is already better than Pearson. And Podkolzin is better than Hoglander. Unless we are planning to play Miller full time as a 3C which would be dumb I don't see Pearson as anything more than a 3rd liner next year. Would he be that much of an upgrade on Vesey, where you can pay Vesey $1 million versus Pearson at $3 million? We gotta get away from those $3 million contracts on the bottom 6 forwards unless we can get a stud 3C like Lowry. Our top 6 is young and legit and we will need to pay all of them eventually. We have to keep the bottom 6 guys at a pay scale that is manageable for the cap for the next 5 years.

I would agree that if Benning signs Pearson to a 3x3 contract in the middle of a pandemic when there will be a fire sale in the summer of similar players, I think that would be the tipping point for me. Benning would need to be demoted to head of the scouting department and in charge of the draft. We would need someone new to negotiate contracts.

$3 million for someone who’s going to play on the 3rd line. I think we’ve been there and done that. Roussel is like a nagging hemorrhoid that won’t go away. I’d rather see what Kole Lind and Jonah Gadjovich can do. Even Vesey had been playing well. Big body who we can probably re-sign for just over a million. Tyler Motte can also slide up to the 3rd line.

Got to disagree with you Jan. We need more grit and truculence in the lineup. Pearson does not provide that. I’d rather spend the money and go after Adam Lowry and make him our 3C. Lowry has more points than Pearson, is a legit 3C which is a much bigger need for us than a 3rd line winger and he can also fight the top heavyweights in the league. I also disagree that Pearson can just slide into a top 6 role. His best days are behind him and he has less points than our 20 year old rookie. Time to move on from Pearson and the rest of the 30 something crew.

(Call-up) Canucks assign Lind to Taxi Squad

Holtby’s contract is very buyout friendly. I’m sure Benning will use that option in the summer. No use in keeping a backup around for $4.3 million when his SV% is .894. Sure we could have signed somebody else for cheaper. I guess the thinking was Demko wasn’t yet a bonafide starter and also maybe Ian Clark could have fixed Holtby. Looks like not even Clark can fix him unfortunately. As for Toffoli, we have Podkolzin coming next year. From everything I have seen he looks like he can step onto BO’s wing immediately. So I wouldn’t worry too much about our top 6. It’s the bottom 6 that needs fixing.
-
Holtby’s numbers were pretty much identical last year in Washington where he played almost 50 games. He is on a downward trend and I don’t see him getting any better. Not even Ian Clark will be able to fix him.
-
I’m pretty sure we can sign a backup next year for $1.5 million who will give us the same numbers as Holtby this year, 3.57 GAA, .894% SV. Those numbers are brutal. Paying a backup $4.3 million to play 25 games and produce those kind of numbers would be terrible. The Canucks will need to be competitive next year. This year was a write off but next year there will be fans in the stands. The expectations will be much higher for this team. Every penny will count when it comes to the cap. If we can free up $2 million by buying out Holtby that can help us to get a 3C so we can have a competitive 3rd line next year. Hamonic may not sign here so we’d also need money to have someone to play with Hughes. I’m hoping we can somehow trade Virtanen so we can free up an additional $2.5 million so we can get a long term partner for Hughes.

So we are supposed to write off next year completely so we can save $1.9 million in cap space for 2022? Tell that to the fans who are going to be buying tickets next year. See what they say. Luckily the building was empty this year.

When something goes bad Benning needs to be fired. When something goes good credit needs to be given to everyone and anyone, except Benning. The Benning haters have no shame... -

You forgot the fact that Demko would have been a UFA in 2 years and could have just signed a short term deal to bet on himself so he could really cash in in a couple of years as a UFA. So yes Benning should take credit for getting him signed long term and buying 3 UFA years. But I guess the Benning haters have to bash something...- 280 replies

That $25 million includes only 12 players and also includes the contract of Ferland. Are you saying we can sign another 7 players (minus Petey, Hughes and Demko) for only $7 million?
