[Proposal] Mittelstadt to VAN
Elias Pettersson replied to DownUndaCanuck's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Lind had a better year in 2019 than Mittelstadt in the AHL. He's also more of a 3rd line player than Mittelstadt and can play centre and wing. I'd rather keep Lind to be honest. I don't see Mittelstadt cracking our top 6, not even as a winger. Also, a 2nd round pick to Benning is almost the same as a 1st round pick, so no need to give that up either. -
If you look at CapFriendly we don't have much left after Petey, Hughes and Demko re-sign. Who said anything about $10+ million contracts? $6.5 million each plus $4.5 million for Demko is already close to $18 million. What exactly are we going to do with the $2 million left over? That won't even cover the re-signing of Hamonic or an equivalent, nevermind some of the other players. Buying out Eriksson is also an option, I'm hoping Benning buys out both Eriksson and Holtby. Then we can actually go shopping for a true 3C and maybe an upgrade on Hamonic.
-
Horvat and Miller are two of the exact players you need in the playoffs to win a Cup. We already have Petey, so no need to trade for Eichel. I'd rather keep what we have and add our kids to the lineup. A 3C and a partner for Hughes are more important than trading two core players and a potential stud offensive defenceman in Rathbone for another 1C which we already have.

You can't time our window to the exact date. We may be contenders in 2 years or it may take 4 years, or it may take longer. Tampa won the Cup last year when Hedman and Stamkos were pushing 30, so BO still has lots of time. Heck even Miller at 31 or 32 may still be a decent player. We have lots of young kids on the way that need to play. I agree if we get a crazy offer for Schmidt you trade him, but you still need some veterans around to win. Not every team is going to peak at the exact same time. Posters always use Chicago as an example of needing to win a Cup when your star players are in their ELC years, but the reality is most teams don't win a Cup until their stars are in their mid to late 20's.

Because we could get a backup in the UFA market for a quarter of the price. His buyout would save is $3.8 million in cap space next year, as his cap hit would only be $500,000. You can get a serviceable backup in free agency for $1 million. That's $2.8 million in cap space that we can use to sign Hamonic or some other Dman to play with Hughes. We don't have any cap space without buying out some contracts after we sign Petey and Hughes to extensions. Benning signed Holtby because he didn't know if Demko was going to become a true starter. Now that Demko is playing like a Vezina trophy candidate we can let Holtby go and just get a cheap backup who can play 25 games.

We are pretty much done. Montreal isn't going to lose 10 straight games. You can't make up 10+ points in less than 20 games. It was fun this year for awhile. We got to see Demko turn into a legit #1 goalie. So our future in net is secure. Petey needs to come back strong next year and Hughes needs to practice on his dzone play. Most importantly we need to get the kids in the lineup and let them play. I think next year is the year the ship turns around.

McDavid's nasty elbow

He should be banned for life really... -
Most of our vets are UFA's, so they can be gone in the summer. Edler, Benn, Sutter, Baertschi, Pearson. If Aquilini approves then we can also buyout Eriksson and Holtby. That would leave only Roussel and Beagle. Beagle is still useful as a 4C for one more year, while Roussel can sit in the press box for a year as an injury fill in. That leaves us with plenty of spots for the young guys. Podkolzin, Lind, Gadjovich, Tryamkin, Juolevi and Rathbone should all be given the chance to make the team right out of camp next year. Schmidt and Myers still have a role on this team as well as Beagle, you can't rid of everybody. Hamonic could be re-signed based on the dollars to play with Hughes for another year or two, so they are pretty much the only 4 I'd want to see in the lineup next year that are 30+.

[Speculation] Canucks Trade Tiers
Elias Pettersson replied to Wolfgang Durst's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Loui Eriksson on the not moving list is because nobody wants him and Benning would have to sacrifice a 1st round pick in order to get rid of him, which he obviously is not going to do. -
[Signing] Canadiens sign Cole Caufield
Elias Pettersson replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Ah my bad. I missed that. Not trying to make a false narrative, just an error on my part. The rest of my post stands. Romanov looks good but at the time of the draft Woo was a better prospect and he may still turn out to be the better player. Vancouver has alot of higher end talent than Montreal under the age of 23, and I think you agreed with me. -

Kotkaniemi, Suzuki, Caulfield. I wouldn’t call that building a powerhouse. Bergevin’s drafting has been horrible. He took Kotkaniemi over Hughes and Little Cole over Podkolzin. Meanwhile Benning has Pettersson, Hughes, Boeser, Podkolzin, Demko, Hoglander, Juolevi, Rathbone. I think Benning is the one who is building the Powerhouse. Montreal has their two best players on huge long term contracts and they are both past their prime years, Price and Weber. Montreal is a perfect example of how horrible drafting will keep you from becoming an elite team. Vancouver is still a below average team as of right now. But at least we have a future to look forward to and with some tweaks here and there, better coaching and getting all those young players in the lineup I think our future looks much brighter than Montreal’s. -

Hoglander is 2 inches taller but probably has 30 pounds on Caulfield. If you think Petey was getting knocked around in his rookie year wait until you see Caulfield. Little Johnny even has 2 inches and 10 pounds on him. -

This kid is even smaller than Little Johnny. Good luck to you... -
Yes hindsight is 20/20. If Benning could have predicted the future and knew that Demko would carry forward his playoff performances into this season then he probably doesn't sign a veteran like Holtby. Instead he probably signs a cheap vet to a $1.5 million dollar deal, which would have freed up $2.8 million. That would have been enough to get Toffoli done. I doubt he still keeps Tanev though, the injury history would have prevented that and he signed Hamonic on a cheap one year deal to basically replace him. Hamonic unfortunately started off slow and then got injured, which screwed up our first month pf the season where we were playing more games than anyone. He's now rounding back into form and is a solid acquisition. At the end of the day, we played too many games at the start of a season where there was no training camp to get the new guys in tune with the team. And Green and his coaching staff aren't really helping things out either. Our team is better than our record shows. Injuries to all of our centres hasn't helped either.
-
It's not really Markstrom + Tanev over Schmidt and Holtby. We signed Holtby as a backup to Demko not as a replacement to Markstrom. If we had signed Markstrom then Demko would have been traded. His value in the summer wasn't as high as it is now. Hindsight is 20/20 but at the end of the day I'd rather have Demko + Schmidt than Markstrom + Tanev, which is what the long term plan would be. Holtby may only be here for this year, he may get bought out in the summer.
-
Stecher getting scratched in Detroit but somehow he is better than Myers. Markstrom getting pulled from games in Calgary while Demko is looking like a Vezina trophy candidate. Same posters calling for Benning’s head are the same ones that wanted to keep Markstrom over Demko and keep Stecher around. The life of being a Canucks fan on CDC...

Seven years without a clear plan from Canucks brass.
Elias Pettersson replied to appleboy's topic in Canucks Talk
I agree with that if we are out of the playoffs. When you win 8 out of 10 games you are not out of a playoff spot. Now after what has happened the last 2 weeks that has changed again. Benning said we are 2 years away from competing. He didn't say we were going to trade all of our expiring contracts to acquire assets and forget about the playoffs for 2 years. He simply said those assets would eventually be replaced by the kids, which is what will happen next year and the year after. Also, what exactly do you think Benning is going to get for Benn? A 5th rounder? Is a 5th rounder going to change our future? Pearson is injured so you can't trade him. And Sutter has a $4 million cap hit, so it's not easy just to trade him to a contender. Most teams who are contending don't have any salary cap space to fit Sutter or Pearson on their team without the Canucks taking salary back. Would you want to trade Sutter to get a 3rd rounder back plus a salary dump that goes into next year? It's not as easy as you think to trade these guys with the large cap hits right now. -

Elias Pettersson replied to appleboy's topic in Canucks Talk
We won 8 out of 10 games. Was Benning supposed to just sell all his assets when your team is winning? You think the owner is going to approve that when he may have a shot at some playoff revenue. Stop living in a bubble. it's not all black and white. Decisions are being made on a weekly basis and changes are always being looked at. We are not Buffalo where we know we are the worst team in the league so therefore you can look at trading core assets as well as expiring contracts no matter what the team does on the ice. With the Canucks we play well enough to win some games and not others, so alot of that has to do with coaching and preparation. Not to mention we have several key injuries right now. I'm sure in the next 2 weeks we will be looking at moving some assets and preparing for next year. Hopefully Benning can get some picks and then plan for the summer to offload some bad contracts and pick up a couple key UFA targets. We need a 3C and a partner for Hughes. Those 2 players should be the sole priority in the offseason. We don't really have anyone in the organization for those positions so Benning will need to acquire them via trade or free agency. -

[Proposal] Buffalo Blockbuster

Dahlin is only 20 years old. Let’s talk about this in 5 years. FYI, Hedman didn’t hit 40 points until he was 23. Dahlin has already done it twice as a teenager. -
Tampa will be close to $9 million over the cap next year. They will need to get rid of 2 of those players you mentioned not just one. Good luck getting rid of McDonagh’s contract for only a first round pick. They will need to trade their entire 2021 draft class to dump that $9 million. I guess it was worth it in order to win a Cup. If they win another Cup this year then probably nobody in Tampa will care about this summer’s draft class. If Tampa had not won the Cup last year I wonder how many people would be calling their GM “smart”. I think “lucky” would be the better word.
-
This is true and you make some good points. On a very good team Gaudette may have not even made the team. Or would be in and out of the lineup. That wouldn’t be Montreal’s excuse though. No matter how you look at that team their drafting has been horrendous. Bergevin literally traded away his best draft pick to a team that just won the Cup and where that player is now part of their core for the next decade. All just to get another French player who’s one dimensional. If Benning had made that same trade he would need secret service protection.

[Proposal] Buffalo Blockbuster
Elias Pettersson replied to HKSR's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Dahlin is a complete defencman. Victor Hedman light. I could see him winning multiple Norris trophies. He’s only 20 and playing on the worst team in the league. Wait until he’s 25. He will be unstoppable. Hughes is a phenom in the offensive zone but a huge liability in the defensive zone. Am I am a big Hughes fan. He really needs to work on his defensive game or else he runs the risk of being a very one dimensional defencman. -
Marc Bergevin has been the GM of the Montreal Canadiens for 9 years. During that time he has missed the playoffs 4 times and lost in the first round 3 times. So his playoff record isn't that much better than Benning's, although he had two good runs in those 9 years. His drafting has been mediocre at best. He drafted Kotkaniemi at 3 and Benning took Hughes at 7. The only real stud player he's ever drafted is Sergachev and he ended up trading him for a guy who is a one dimensional player. Meanwhile Sergachev looks like a Norris trophy candidate right now. He's also made some really dumb trades but has been better lately. He's had a good run and to this day Montreal is still an average team. Not much better than when he took over and not much in the way of stud core players coming in the pipeline. In 9 years he's drafted 68 players, he really liked to collect those draft picks which is a good thing. However, out of 68 players drafted only 8 have played over 100 games, and he's traded 4 of them. That doesn't sound like a very successful GM to me, yet he still has his job to this day. He's also on his 3rd coach and he's still around. That's just one example, but it does show that some owners have more patience than others. Benning has made some mistakes in surrounding his core players. That is undeniable even to the most loyal fan. But at the end of the day we have one of the better group of young core players in the entire NHL, with more on the way. I'm not saying Benning should have a lifetime contract just because of his drafting, but at the very least he should be allowed to ride out the rest of his contract and to see if he can make up for past mistakes and get a better surrounding cast for his core drafted players. I'd like to see Benning have another offseason and see what this team can do next year with a new coach. A 3rd coach should be his last. If it goes well then we are in good shape. If it doesn't then we are looking at a new GM and probably a new rebuild for another 5-7 years.
