Cap… Wait it out a year or pay a price to make space?
Elias Pettersson replied to Junkyard Dog's topic in Canucks Talk
Which team is giving us a 3rd round pick for Beauvillier? Obviously it that was the case we wouldn’t need to buy him out. Nobody has $4.1 million in extra cap space to fit Beauvillier on their team. Only team that would want him would be a team that has cap space that wants a sweetener. Also, we need a 3C and 2-3 Dmen. We don’t need to keep all of our smaller wingers. -
Cap… Wait it out a year or pay a price to make space?
Elias Pettersson replied to Junkyard Dog's topic in Canucks Talk
I don't see us adding any sweeteners to deals, however there is now a possibility of a buyout to free up cap space. If I had to guess I would say that Beauvillier would be the guy getting bought out. The buyout number is reasonable and frees up almost $2.8 million in cap space this year. We would have a $1.4 million cap hit for next year, so it's not ideal but probably is the best option of the bunch. I don't see any other way to free up almost $3 million in cap space without adding a sweetener. The other option is to try and trade a forward with term for a Dman with term or for a 3C, so money in, money out. I also think we are keeping our pick at 11. There are lots of options with that pick and we will get a good player... -
[Proposal] Vancouver + Nashville, Swap n Shop
Elias Pettersson replied to Warhippy's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
This is a good trade proposal. If the player that Nashville really wants is still there at 11 then they might go for it. Lots of guys could drop to 11. Also, if Wood and Reinbacher are both gone then I wouldn't have a problem moving down to 15. There isn't much of a difference in quality from 11 to 15 unless someone drops, so this trade would need to happen on the draft floor when the 11 pick is up. If Wood is there at 11 I take him and run. He is just as big as Schaefer and has the potential to be an elite forward... -
I don’t think we would find all this out until he plays as a 3C. Would need to move him at training camp and preseason. Problem is if he doesn’t pan out we are kinda screwed.
-
Beauvillier doesn’t kill penalties so he couldn’t be a 3C. Joshua does kill penalties and also has size and toughness. Joshua is also well over 50% in the faceoff circle in limited time there. Putting him at 3C could be a good way to give him more minutes and responsibilities. When Joshua was moved up the lineup that is when he seemed to play better.
-
He only averaged around 11 minutes a night. When he played higher in the lineup he seemed to have better production. If we are signing Lucic to play the enforcer role on the 4th line then we can slide Joshua up to 3C. That would be the cheapest way to do this and we also get tougher as well...

Fraser Minten and Matthew Knies. Toronto fans better hope these guys turn out to be big time players. Cause they are the only two prospects that Toronto has at the moment. They also only have Boston's first round pick this year and then don't pick again until the 5th round. Treliving could probably fly down to Tampa and hang out with BriseBois on draft day. Neither one of them will have much to do this year other than play poker and cheer on the rest of the teams. Poor Treliving. He went from one bad situation to a worse one. He has no draft capital, no prospects other than the two guys I mentioned, Matthews is 29 days away from walking away from Toronto for nothing in return, Tavares is now a left winger and can't really play centre anymore, Marner's NMC also kicks in July 1 so he can walk in 2025 for nothing, Nylander is a UFA in 2024 and will want a 9x8 contract, and on top of all of that their backup goalie next year will be making almost $5 million and their starter will be hit and miss.
-
Yup. I think Dubas will go hard after Matthews. Pittsburgh has the cap space in the summer of 2024 and they can also trade and/or buyout some contracts as well. Matthews and Crosby will be playing together and they'll move Malkin to the wing to accomodate. Crosby will sign an extension to play another 2-3 years as well until he is 40. Book it...

Didn't the Rangers have to give up the pick to the broker (Arizona), not Chicago? If Vancouver trades Myers and involves a 3rd team as a broker I am pretty sure that they would get positive value from the deal. However, after looking at the list of Dmen that are UFA's next summer, there are quite a few guys that may be available that are better and cheaper options. So I would say that the Canucks would either have to explore a trade for Myers before the season starts or just let his contract expire and use that cap space in the summer to extend Petey...
-
I agree. If Myers plays hardball then just put him on waivers where his NTC has zero effect. If he doesn't get claimed then sit him in the press box. If he actually wants to continue playing in the NHL and wants another contract then he should accept a trade to anywhere at that point. Enough with coddling these players. GM's should really stop using these NTC's on these free agents. It just makes things harder for everyone. I mean the player is still getting his money regardless where he plays. Giving them a NTC on top just makes trades that much more difficult and makes it harder to move contracts. You would think GM's would have learned by now.

So you are willing to admit that the Tavares contract is horrendous, the Matthews, Marner extensions are horrendous, Dubas trade record is poor. So I’m trying to figure out what I am supposed to give him credit for? What else is there? Toronto has no depth, no prospects and no draft picks. These are facts so why do you keep saying otherwise? Dubas had regular season success. He made the playoffs all 5 years as a Leafs GM. So there you go. That’s his success. I will concede that. If you feel that is good enough to get a POHO job after all of his other failures then that’s your opinion. Your opinion is also not fact. As far as regular season success being the only reason that counts in keeping your GM job (your words) then I have a question for you. Why did Mike Gillis get fired when he made the playoffs five out of the six seasons he was the POHO of the Canucks, winning the President’s trophy as the best team in hockey on two separate occasions. Can you explain that? Was it really that one season that he missed the playoffs that got him fired or was it that Aquilini wasn’t happy with the lack of playoff success after the 2011 finals and he wanted to change it up? You tell me. If the NHL is not a club then why can’t a guy like Gillis get another job after winning the Presidents trophy two years in a row and making the Stanley Cup finals once in a 6 year span while a guy like Dubas, who never accomplished any of that, can be hired by a new club within weeks of getting fired from his old gig? Can you explain that? Can you name a GM who got fired for losing in the postseason? Can you? Yes I can. Brian Burke make the playoffs 4 years in a row and his team won their division in the 2003-2004 season and finished 7th overall in the NHL and made the playoffs. They lost in the first round in a tight 7 game battle with Calgary and then afterwards Burke’s contract was not renewed by Aquilini. Can you explain why Burke effectively got fired after losing in the post season?

Liverpool was a successful club long before FSG bought them. They won 18 out of their 19 Premier League titles and 5 out of their 6 Champions League titles well before FSG got involved. As for the Boston Red Sox, they were also a powerhouse way before John Henry bought them. They could have won several World Series prior to 2004 but just had bad luck and the curse of the Bambino. As for their purchase of Pittsburgh Penguins, they bought them in 2021 and then Pittsburgh went on to miss the playoffs for the first time in 15 years afterwards. So I wouldn’t put too much stock into what they are doing now. The masterminds behind the Penguins success are all gone now and some are now in Vancouver. We will see what Dubas does over there over the next few years. I wonder what he’s going to do when Crosby retires?

I debate everyone on here. It’s always fun. Me and you seem to always be debating the Maple Leafs. Not sure why. But in any event, I have had lots of give and take debates on here without issues. Perhaps I am being a little overly critical when I say that Dubas is one of the worst GM’s in NHL history. I mean I wasn’t even born the last time the Leafs won the cup so I am sure there may have been worse GM’s prior to my arrival on Earth. If you take everything I say literally then that’s probably where the problem arises to be honest. So let’s say that out of the last 100 years Dubas is in the bottom 10%. I could live with that. You are saying he is in the middle, so we disagree. I believe Dubas has done less with more than 90% of the GM’s I have seen over the last 35+ years. He was handed a core, he didn’t have to draft it. The only significant player he ever acquired was a UFA in Tavares and Tavares specifically stated that he only wanted to play in Toronto. So even Maggie the Monkey could have signed Tavares to a UFA contract to play in Toronto. Even so, he overpaid him by at least $2 million, maybe more. Tavares was a PPG guy at the time. He wasn’t worth anywhere near $11 million. Dubas made Tavares the second highest paid player in the NHL at the time, only behind Connor McDavid. Do you really think Tavares was the second best player in the NHL in 2018? Then after overpaying Tavares, he goes all hardball on Nylander. So of course Nylander said F you and goes to play in Europe. Then Dubas has a change of heart and goes and overpays Nylander because Nylander has all the leverage. So two bad contracts within a span of only a few months. Then the very next summer he trades Kadri for two role players and then decides to pay maximum dollar to his two RFA’s, Matthews and Marner. For some strange reason though he doesn’t sign them to 8 year max deals even though he is paying them top dollars. I still can’t figure that one out. But that’s an entirely separate debate. Now that he has all his core 4 locked up to contracts that are taking up almost 50% of the cap he tries to build out the rest of the roster. That’s kinda hard to do when 4 guys are taking up half the cap. I mean how many other teams in the NHL are in that position? Zero? And it’s not like these 4 guys all play different roles either. They are all forwards, all soft and all play the same way for the most part. If you are going to spend half your cap on 4 guys then at least have that money spread around to different types of players. So now that Dubas has hamstrung himself with the salary cap, he tries to go cheap on the rest of the team. He also seems to have a hard time finding Dmen and a goalie. In any event, with the core 4 he is able to do really well playing shinny hockey during the regular season, but of course when the real season starts his teams can’t compete against the teams that are actually built to win. This is a proven fact, there is no debate about it. So now if you want to call this success, then by all means you are entitled to your opinion. I mean Gillis did the same thing, he also inherited a core and made a bunch of trades and traded picks and prospects to go for it every year. The difference is that Gillis actually had playoff success. He almost won the cup. Yet, he couldn’t find a new job even though he was one win away from glory. Dubas, on the other hand can’t win a playoff series to save his life but he has teams lined up to hire him. Can you explain this? I mean if that isn’t an example that the NHL is a club then I don’t know what is. Benning built a core all on his own and can’t even get a gig with a bottom feeder. Yet Dubas, who actually won less playoff rounds than Benning did, gets a POHO job after only two weeks of being fired from Toronto. Go figure. I pretty much presented to you all factual information. Please correct me where I am wrong and off base. As for other forums, no I don’t partake in debates anywhere else. Dubas is a young guy, so maybe the younger crowd likes him. I don’t know. I am older than Dubas and have followed hockey a lot longer than him, he wasn’t even born when I was watching and analyzing hockey games. So, I can’t really explain to you why Dubas has such a great reputation elsewhere. I would have to log on those boards and read about it to understand it I guess…

I don't eat candy bars so that scenario makes no sense to me... But in any event, it's the same as the Horvat trade. In the end we got Hronek and Raty plus Beau and a 4th for Horvat and a 2nd. We could have kept the 1st round pick but we didn't. Magic beans only work if they turn into magic. Carlsson is as close to turning into magic as there ever will be. The four 1st round picks we are giving away could turn out to be Jake Virtanen and Olli Juolevi. Plus, we are getting a RHD partner for Hughes, which is worth at least a first-round pick on its own. Plus, a 3C. What I am doing with this trade is two things. First, I am dumping the two oldest players of our core and getting a brand-new shiny piece that may be as good as the best piece we have right now. Plus, on top of that I am building out the rest of the team by filling the two biggest holes, 3C and a partner for Hughes. This is what we need to do to not only make the playoffs but also try and win a Stanley Cup. Demko is also being replaced in my scenario by Adin Hill, who is actually playing in the Stanley Cup finals right now. And the last important piece of my trade is that I am freeing up $12 million in cap space, which is probably more important than the 3C. This allows us to get a guy like Ryan Graves to fill out the top 4 D. I am building an entire team so we can make a run in the playoffs next season. Staying pat the way we are right now isn't going to allow us to take the next step. I don't really want to lose Miller or Demko. But if I had to move one of the core pieces it would be one or both of them. Petey and Hughes are the untouchables and we just got Hronek. Kuzmenko could also be moved as well, I am not opposed to that for the right price...

I agree. Some of the moves that Benning made just make me shake my head, but he started from scratch and built out our entire core from nothing. Gillis gave him zero. Not only that Gillis also gave him two past their prime Sedins with $7 million contracts for another 4 years, which totally derailed our ability to actually start a rebuild. Getting two superstar players as well as a stud goalie in round 2 and then a great trade for JT Miller was what built this team of today. You gotta give credit where credit is due. Benning not getting another job while Dubas walks into Pittsburgh as the new POHO has more to do with Dubas being part of the club than his actual ability to build a hockey team. Benning left the Canucks in way better shape than Dubas is leaving the Leafs...
