  1. If Marky signs a long term extension then there is no need to keep an asset like Demko on the bench as a backup. And he probably wouldn't want to stay anyways. We need help up front, not just for this year, but we also need a long term solution for the top 6. Packaging Demko/Stecher makes perfect sense as Marky/DiPietro and Rafferty would make them redundant. Leivo will be gone at the end of the year, who knows if Ferland will ever come back and Pearson most likely is gone after next year. So that leaves at least 2 spots open in the top 6. Podkolzin looks like a stud and could slide into one of those spots. Hoglander and Madden are still prospects. So we need a bonafide top 6 winger to fill the gap. Even Benning himself admitted he is looking for one.
  2. I think BO may become more of the shutdown C role while Gaudette may become more of the offensive C role. Can't really say who will be 2C versus 3C but it doesn't matter really. As long as we have 3 strong lines that can score that is all that matters. But I do agree Virtanen may be a better fit with BO in order to play that shutdown role and play against the likes of Malkin. I'm thinking you can even switch BO and Gaudette and have BO centre Roussel and Virtanen and then find some new linemates for Gaudette. Pearson can be one and then we need to make a trade for another. Or we bring up Kole Lind and see what he can do.
  3. I agree. I think with Rafferty's play and with Marky most likely signing a well deserved long term extension, we have the flexibility to trade Demko and Stecher and package them into a top 6 forward. Anthony Mantha would be my first choice, as he is a huge body who can skate and even drop the gloves to defend his teammates and can play with BO and either Pearson or Virtanen to make a strong second line for the playoffs. Tanev is too risky to sign long term. I predict we keep him for the playoff push though and then he most likely walks in the summer. If Tryamkin can come back before the playoffs he will add a huge boost to this defence. Adding Tryamkin and Rafferty to the playoff push would be huge.

  5. I don't think we are going to re-sign Tanev. We don't have the cap space next year. He will be a UFA and will want a long term deal at $5-6 million. Don't think I'd want to re-sign Tanev to a 5-6 year deal at those numbers considering his injury history. We already got burnt this year with Ferland who could be out the rest of the year or longer. We can't afford to re-sign another player to a long term deal who hasn't played a full season in his entire career. I understand what he brings to the team but it is too risky. We will have to compensate by bringing in the young guys. Tryamkin could be an option, Juolevi, Brisebois, etc. At some point the young guys have to play. If we just keep re-signing our veterans to long term deals we will be in cap purgatory very soon. Edler and Benn are in the same situation. Once their contracts run out they will need to be replaced with the young guys. At some point Benning's draft picks have to play and we have to integrate them into the team. Once Petey and Quinn sign their extensions the money will run dry.
  6. Rafferty is ready for the NHL now. He's 24 years old. He could play on the 3rd pairing today. Would give us an instant offensive boost and he can run our 2nd unit PP. Stecher isn't coming back next year, we don't have the cap space to re-up him on a new deal. He will want over $3 million. The time to trade Stecher would be this year so we can bring Rafferty up to replace him and use Stecher as a piece to acquire another top 6 forward. With Ferland and now Leivo out long term it is imperative that Benning acquire another forward who can play in the top 6 if we have any playoff aspirations this year. Also, if Benning were to sign Markstrom to a long term deal this year then we can also use Demko as a trade chip along with Stecher. No point in keeping Demko around if Marky is going to sign a long term deal. The question is what can we get for a Demko/Stecher + package? Detroit is in full re-build mode now. They need help in goal and on defence. If we add to Demko/Stecher could we get Anthony Mantha? He's 25 so not one of their younger players and is an RFA this summer, so maybe Detroit would prefer to trade him for several younger pieces to help with their rebuild. Mantha playing with BO and Virtanen could be a very good 2nd line with size and speed. Or you keep Virtanen on the 3rd line and Pearson plays with Mantha and BO.
  7. Yes. Too bad Ferland wasn’t there to join the party. It’s a shame he can’t play. With a healthy Ferland wreaking havoc we’d easily be a playoff team.
  8. I think this Lias kid can play hockey. Put him on Petey's wing and see what happens. As long as it isn't an overpayment you have to take the gamble. Swedes always excel in Vancouver with the odd exception. Loui is the exception, most Swedes are very productive here. I'd throw the dice on Lias.
  9. His dad played at 190 pounds. He just has to attend more family dinners and maybe he can put the weight on. He skates like the wind and is playing at a Hobey Baker award pace in only his second year. I wouldn't give up on him now soley because of his weight. I remember Linden being quite skinny when we drafted him and there were major concerns about how he would hold up in the NHL. 155 pounds is quite small, we are talking little Johnny small. However given his family pedigree I wouldn't pull the trigger yet.
  10. Gretzky has 2,857 points and 55 NHL scoring records, Messier has 1,887 points. Just sayin'... Esa Tikkanen has 5 Stanley Cups, is he better than Gretzky?
  11. Other than Petey of course, cause he plays like Gretzky who was better than Messier...
  12. Benning has made mistakes. Even Scotty Bowman made mistakes. I don't think it is prudent for posters to dismiss mistakes that were made and to try and justify everything that Benning has done. All GM's make mistakes. But you have to look at the overall body of work. People always bring up Eriksson and Juolevi as Benning blunders. Then there are the anchor contracts he has signed, specifically guys who are role players. Most of these deals could be justified at the time of the signing. But then every deal can be done that way, what GM does a deal and then immediately regrets it the same day?? We all have the advantage of hindsight and looking back on what's been done and playing Monday morning quarterback. That's not how his works. At the end of the day we need to look at the entire body of work done by Benning. Benning inherited a club on the decline with ageing veterans and with virtually zero prospects. In 5 years he's managed to rebuild our entire prospect pool, our farm team and give us some solid young pieces that are currently on the roster. Is the rebuild over? No it's not. There are still more pieces to get and more prospects to join the big club. Until that happens we will be a borderline playoff team. Having said all that looking at the current roster I think we are a playoff team today. With Markstrom as a legit #1 goalie and with JT Miller added to the mix of top 6 forwards and with Gaudette and Jake and now Roussel giving us a competitive 3rd line, I think most of the pieces are there to at least make the playoffs. The problem is the coaching. It's very easy to see the team is not playing to it's full potential and quite frankly I think Green has lost the room at this point. He's an inexperienced head coach just like Willy D and he is n over his head right now. The immediate fix is to get a new experienced coach like Peter DeBoer who has been to 2 finals with 2 different teams. Once that is in place then we can re-evaluate our team and see what is missing. We can't do much about Loui's contract right now and Ferland getting another 2 concussions this year didn't help either. But the young core is there and it is fun to watch. We just need to right the ship with a new bench boss and go from there. If we can do that sooner rather than later then perhaps the playoffs can still be a goal this year. Ultimately Aquilini will need to make the final decision. I hope he chooses wisely.
  13. If you actually watch the games the players who Benning has acquired via the draft or trade or free agency for the most part aren't the problem. The problem is the coaching. We replaced CHL Willy with AHL Green. What did you expect? We had a chance to sign Gerard Gallant and Barry Trotz and blew it. Now Peter DeBoer who has been to two Cup finals and is an actual NHL head coach is available. We need to fire Green and hire DeBoer. It's pretty simple really. Now if DeBoer has little success with this team then that is a different story. But until we actually get an NHL coach who can get the best out of these young players Benning has drafted then firing Benning at this stage makes no sense.
  14. That team he was coaching this year is atrocious. A far cry from the 2015 team. He'd be the perfect coach to come here and teach our young players. He's been to the finals twice with 2 different teams. He's not Scotty Bowman but he makes AHL Green and CHL Willy look like pee wee coaches.
  15. Exactly. We screwed up hiring Green over Gerard Gallant. We can’t make that mistake again. Green isn’t the guy. We don’t need 10 more games to figure that out. DeBoer is available today. I’d fire Green and hire DoBoer tomorrow.
  16. Last time he tweeted was during the Carolina game when we won in OT. He’s probably been spending the last week thinking about who to hire as his next coach.
