Who here is actually happy with the Hronek trade?
Elias Pettersson replied to Odd.'s topic in Canucks Talk
It’s gonna be a long 8 years for those Islander fans. -
The Leafs actually started rebuilding in 2008 with Luke Schenn. Then Nazim Kadri. The problem was the Leafs continued to be bad for so long that they ended up with 6 top 8 picks over a 9 year period. So if you want to get technical about it the Leafs really started their rebuild back in 2008. They ended up ten years later with a core 4 and then Reilly on the back end. In comparison, the Canucks were still competing for cups up until 2013. They then refused to rebuild until the Sedins retired. So their rebuild/retool started with the 2016 draft, which was 8 years after Toronto. However, if you really want to stick to the Leafs core 4, then Marner got drafted in 2015, which is still 2 years prior to Petey getting drafted. So either way the Leafs started their current core a good 2 years before the Canucks did.

Imagine if Hronek scores more points next year than Horvat? It could happen. What will they do in New York? -

JJ Daigneault was a LHD not a RHD. He may have played the right side. It’s hard to remember though. -
The Sundin teams were good but can’t compare to the Gilmour teams. I would say in the 1992-1993 and 1993-1994 seasons, Gilmour was a top 2-3 player in the entire NHL. Hitting almost 130 points and winning the Selke trophy. I think only Mario was better in 1992-93 and Fedorov in 1993-94. The fact we beat that team easily shows how good our 1994 team really was. People say that the 1994 team barely made the playoffs, but fail to understand we made a major trade that year just before the playoffs. Hedican, Brown and Lafayette were huge in the playoffs. Linden also had an average regular season that year, but went into complete beast mode in the playoffs. He was like Kevin Stevens in his prime. So even though we started out as an average team, by the time the playoffs rolled around we were a powerhouse.

Is Tampa Bay’s Stanley Cup win acknowledged with an asterisk? If not, then none of those playoff series should be. Horvat wasn’t the start of our new core. He was drafted at a time when we still had the Sedins and were still trying to contend. Gillis traded Schneider because we had a goalie controversy and decided to keep Luongo. It wasn’t a trade to start building a new core. The start of the new core came under Benning, but it wasn’t until the Sedins were gone that we really started a rebuild, retool, whatever you want to call It. That was in 2017 and Petey was the first guy drafted. It could have started as early as 2016 but we know what happened with that draft.

That’s a great point about Höglander and Podkolzin. Podkolzin was a top 10 pick in 2019. In 2023 he is still fighting for a roster spot and spent time in the minors last year. He may not become more than a 3rd liner. Or he could break out and be a top 6 power forward. We just don’t know. With Hronek we already know what we have in him. He’s a top 4 Dman all day long. Going back 53 years, how many times have the Canucks drafted a top 4 RHD in the first round? Garth Butcher? One guy in 53 years. Unbelievable really if you think about it. -

Elias Pettersson replied to Odd.'s topic in Canucks Talk
The best-case scenario is the the 18OA is a top 4 Dman in 4-5 years, basically Filip Hronek. So, instead of waiting 4-5 years we time travelled and got Hronek here 5 years earlier at 25 years old. Seems like that is the best way to analyze this trade. The 2nd pick is irrelevant as we got a 4th pick back and we've drafted better guys in the 4th than the 2nd. Only downside is that we have to pay Hronek as he's now a top 4 Dman. But we added him to the core now so we can compete much earlier... -
Sure, the Canucks are definitely still a work in progress. I'm really looking at the players during the regular season as of right now. Hard to compare when one team made the playoffs and the other team didn't. What I saw this year was a huge increase in production from our core, Petey and Hughes specifically, both offensively and defensively, versus the Toronto core, specifically Matthews and Rielly. Petey and Matthews went in complete opposite directions this year. Matthews won the Hart trophy last year while some people wanted Petey sent to Abby. This year, Petey is a top 10-15 player in the league while Matthews went from 106 points to 85. Same with Hughes and Rielly. Hughes separated himself big time from Rielly this year. Marner was about the same as well as Nylander, while Miller dipped in the first half of the season but came on strong in the second half. Kuzmenko arrived this year and gave us someone who can compare to Nylander, so now we have another core piece to match Toronto. Prior to this year, we didn't have our 40-goal scorer. The Leafs have had their core set for awhile, while ours just completed this year with the addition of Kuzmenko and also Hronek. Next year will be the big test. In terms of the hunger comment, perhaps I am being a homer on that, so be it.
-
Didn’t the Leafs set up their core before the Canucks did? Or am I missing something here? Weren’t Nylander, Marner, Matthews and Rielly all drafted before Petey, Hughes and the arrival of Miller? Didn’t we just sign Kuzmenko last summer? Why doesn’t the playoff bubble count? Because it doesn’t suit a narrative? Just curious why you think comparing the Leafs core that was started by drafting Rielly in 2012 should be compared to the Canucks core which started by the drafting of Pettersson in 2017? Don’t you think the Canucks need a bit more time to get it together?

Hellebuyck watch. Edm or Tor ? Or Chicago ?

Elias Pettersson replied to MaxVerstappen33's topic in General Hockey Discussion
Haha, Matthews and Marner versus Gilmour and Clark. Geez I wonder which team would come out on top? That Gilmour and Clark team was the last decent playoff team that Toronto had. And Bure and Linden destroyed them. “Greg Adams, Greg Adams, Adams with the goal, and the Canucks are going to the Stanley Cup finals!!!!” Still remember it like it was yesterday. Gilmour knew how to party too. He was a regular at the Roxy. -

True. The Leafs don’t have high value picks or prospects though. Winnipeg is in the same boat as Toronto. Most of their top guys are also coming up to UFA. And PLD wants to go to Montreal. So they are probably gonna rebuild at this point. -
Yes, there is a lot to unpack here as well. But let's cut to the chase here. You are calling me a homer, comparing me to Heffy and telling me that I am attacking you, when it's really the other way around. But if you really are a lawyer then that makes perfect sense. You are doing exactly what a lawyer typically does, spin the narrative to make it look like you're the good guy and I'm the criminal who needs to be locked up for 20 years. I know alot of lawyers, so I know the deal. In any event, I will come back with this so we can end this debate on friendly terms since I actually do like and respect you as a poster. Firstly, I don't like Connor McDavid. I have my reasons, but I was a kid watching Gretzky and Lemieux and followed them their entire careers. Moving on to Crosby same thing. McDavid is a different animal. He has a huge ego, is a d*ck in interviews, and plays the game like he's looking to rack up the individual points. That's my take on him and after watching the best players in history over a 35-year period that is how I feel and nothing you can say will change my opinion, so no point in even countering back on that. He's the anti-Gretzky. Having said all of that, I do believe he is a great player and will most likely finish his career in the top 10 players of all time. So, I am acknowledging his greatness even though I think he is a d*ck. I don't think he will ever win a cup until he and Draisaitl learn to play a team game and learn to play better 5 on 5. I can't envision a team winning a cup based soley on their power play. But hey, I could be wrong and if it happens, I will admit I'm wrong. As for the Leafs, I also don't like Matthews and Marner either. They also rack up the points in the regular season and do a no show in the playoffs. At least McDavid and Draisaitl showed up to play against Vegas, so I will give them that. But the Toronto M&M duo were absolutely shameful against Florida. Tkachuk is twice the player and twice the man that the Toronto M&M duo are, and I don't even like Tkachuk. As for the Leafs in general, I never said Rielly was an AHL defender, I said their defence as a whole. Which it is. You can spin it any way you want, but Giordano is 5 years past him prime, McCabe is a 5-6 Dman at best. Schenn was a Canuck for most of the year, so I am not even including him as I consider him a Canuck, but he is their second best Dman right now, so they should go all out to re-sign him. I have a feeling he will come back to Vancouver though, as he has a new baby now and lives in Kelowna. TJ Brodie was good 7 years ago. Not sure what you see in him now. The others I don't have much to say about. If you think they are NHL worthy then that's great, we have a difference of opinion and I'll leave it at that. As for their goaltending, Murray was supposed to be their starter. He was great in Pittsburgh. He is now worse than Delia, who is an AHL goaltender. As for Samsonov, Washington let him go for free in the summer. Usually, you don't pick up a starting NHL goalie for free in the summer. Having said that, he did well to substitute for Murray in the regular season but couldn't pull it off in the playoffs. I wouldn't be surprised if the Shanaplan consists of going for round 3 and trying to find a new starting goalie in the summer once again. I won't get into any of the Canucks stuff as I don't really want to debate that any longer. It's over. If you want to continue to call me a homer and compare me to other posters, go right ahead as it doesn't actually bother me. I got thick skin and I hang around lawyers all the time. Some are actually fun to be around, others not so much, but I do learn alot from them which has helped me to develop thick skin...

This is something that has bothered alot of people with Miller. To be honest, it did bother me a bit as well. At the end of the day, you look at Toronto and see the players they have, guys that rack up the points and then go missing in the playoffs. These guys just don't have the passion and the will to do what it takes to win the cup. Petey and Miller both have that hunger and that drive to succeed. We will see this next spring when we make the playoffs and the real games start. How many people have told you they hate Tkachuk? Lots of people on here don't like him. But look at what he's doing with Florida. Would you not prefer him to Matthews and Marner? For all the hate Tkachuk gets, he has that drive to be successful and he really wants to win it all. That's all you can hope for in a player.

Another cbj van trade proposal
Elias Pettersson replied to Mikebeezy's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Peeke would be a guy I would go after. His +/- is horrible but he plays the top minutes against the other teams top lines. Gavrikov also had a terrible +/- until he was traded to LA. Peeke would be great with Hughes and his contract is quite reasonable too. They probably want to move him to make room for Jiricek, who will be their top pairing guy in the near future. To Vancouver: Andrew Peeke 2023 2nd round pick (34OA) Sean Kuraly To Columbus: 2023 1st round pick (11OA) Conor Garland -
Yes, 4 more years at a PPG then moving into a 3C role when he's 34 or moving to the wing. Even on the wing on the 3rd line he would be servicable at age 35. Or he could pull a Joe Pavelski and be a PPG guy throughout his contract. Benn doesn't seem to be slowing down. He may a PPG for another 2-3 years...

Hellebuyck watch. Edm or Tor ? Or Chicago ?
Elias Pettersson replied to MaxVerstappen33's topic in General Hockey Discussion
Murray would go the other way in any trade. Murray and Marner for Hellebuyck and Pionk... -
Miller has only missed a handful of games in 5 years with the Canucks. During that time he's been a consistent PPG guy and much better than that last year. He's been very durable and consistent. He actually has better numbers than Benn when both were ages 28 and 29. So his contract of 8x7 is actually under market value. Of course, we don't know what will happen to him moving forwards, but based on his previous 5 years, there is nothing to indicate he is going to fall off a cliff like Loui. He looks like Jamie Benn out there to be honest, playing wing and centre like Jamie and throwing his weight around...

Your original post said that the Leafs have been a million times better than the Canucks over the years. You never specified a time frame. Now after I presented you with HARD facts that show this isn’t the case and you are factually incorrect, you change course and specify the last 9 years. Why the last 9 years? Just because we sucked during that time? Why don’t you mention the years from 2006-2016 when the Leafs only made the playoffs once in 10 years while the Canucks were winning multiple President’s trophies and going to game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals? You can’t just pick a timeframe and say the Leafs are a million times better than the Canucks. Things do change over time. We had tons of success with the Sedins while the Leafs couldn’t even make the playoffs. That was our window. Our window closed in 2014 and we had to start over again. Meanwhile the Leafs were building that entire time when we had the Sedins and were so bad they even finished worst in the entire NHL and had the luxury of drafting first overall. So picking and choosing a timeframe and saying one team is a million times better than the other is being disingenuous. Teams go through cycles all the time. If you look at the last 40 years the Canucks overall have been way more successful than the Leafs, that is factual information that is not disputable. As for regular season success versus playoff success, I’m sorry but you’re way off on that. Nobody cares about winning during the regular season except Leafs fans who are used to losing in the playoffs. Playoff success is all that matters. Winning the cup is why you play the games. Any player will tell you that. The Sedins era wasn’t a failure because they did have playoff success. They went to a cup final. Lots of teams don’t even accomplish that. If they had not done that then yes it wound have been a failure because nobody cares about the President’s trophies. As for the present, you are claiming that Toronto has a competitive team, yet they can barely win a playoff round, they have an AHL defence and an AHL goalie. They are a mess right now. The GM has been fired, Spezza resigned, the coach is about to be fired, Shanaplan is on its last legs. Matthews is a UFA in a year, Tavares is overpaid by like $4 million. Their star forwards choked in the playoffs again. They are closer to blowing it all up than they are in winning the cup. Meanwhile, we hired a 3 time champion in Jim Rutherford. He came here with a plan. He is executing that plan. It takes more than 1 1/2 years to do that. So we are still in waiting mode. This coming year looks like the year we take the next step and make the playoffs. IMO we are in better shape than the Leafs. As for Petey vs. McDavid, at some point you need to stop a debate. We went at for a bit and it’s done now. However, I will say that I never claimed that Petey was a better player than McDavid. We were talking about Draisaitl and Miller too. Petey is a better overall player than Draisaitl. And Miller is a better two way player than Draisaitl. Those facts are indisputable. You put Petey on the Oilers and switch him with Draisaitl and they can probably win the cup. I can trash McDavid and the Leafs any time I want to be totally honest with you. This is a Canucks message board. The Leafs and McDavid get trashed on here every day but you took the time to heavily respond to my posts to defend them. The fact that you go so hard to defend both of them tells me you are not objective at all and most likely you are a McDavid and Leafs fan. I mean who else would be defending them so hard if not a fan?

No. Like Rupert said it wasn’t up for any Oscars. I think it was a low grade B movie on tv. Was a long time ago. An 18 wheeler was literally chasing a car down the highway for 2 hours. That was the whole movie.

No. Also, I kept thinking about that movie of the 18-wheeler chasing down that car for 2 hours. Forgot the name of the movie...
