It's amazing how people on CDC are calling Hronek a PP specialist, the guy is actually a pretty good defender and was a regular penalty killer with Detroit. Even the beat writer for Detroit said this, he said Hronek broke out this year and was playing like a top pairing Dman. I think some people on CDC are gonna be shocked when they actually see Hronek play...

Your post didn't provide an actual timeframe for when we sucked and the Leafs didn't. The Leafs have been a pretty underwhelming team since 1982. No cups, no Stanley Cup finals, no significant playoff victories to speak of. No major regular season success in terms of President's trophies. Meanwhile, the Canucks have had 3 beautiful runs to the finals with 3 completely different teams. Obviously the first run was a fluke, but the other two were great teams built by 2 different GM's. Sure, since 2013 the Canucks have sucked. But the Leafs haven't done much better. You always seem to want to downplay our team and players, i.e with Petey versus McDavid and now the Canucks vs. the Leafs. You say you are neutral and objective, but I don't see that, sorry. And his response wasn't silly, he was confirming what I pointed out with facts. The Leafs today are a mess, they have a top-heavy roster with an AHL defence and goaltending. They are in no man's land. Sure, they make the playoffs every year, but what is the point if you can only win one round since 2004? I'd rather have the Canucks roster right now than the Leafs. At least we have a top 7 goalie in the league, we have 2 stud Dmen now who both know how to play defence, and we have 3 stud forwards, none of whom are making $11 million. And even if Petey gets to $11 million, Miller is locked in at $8 million for the rest of his career while bringing even more production than Tavares. And we have alot more younger players who are on the active roster and in Abby who can help us now and in the future. And IMO we have a better coach and assistant coaches and an actual GM and POHO who have won cups. The Shanaplan in Toronto has produced one playoff victory in 9 years. I think it's time for them to find a new plan. We did that and we are much better off now...

Didn't we trade Hamonic with no retention and actually got a 3rd round pick back? I feel we can do the same with Garland. Also, Beauvillier, Myers and Pearson are off the books next season. That's over $13 million in new cap space next season along with probably another $2-3 million in increase of the cap. That's plenty to cover the Petey and Hronek extensions. Klimovich, Raty, Hirose, Lekkerimaki, McDonough, Petey D and Karlsson are all guys that look like they can make the club in the next two years as well, so we will have multiple new ELC contracts coming in.

I believe we obtained that player in Hronek. The rest of the RHD will be filled with guys we already have in the system and maybe getting back Schenn. At this point , I don't see us acquiring another high priced RHD to play with Hughes. Schenn could be that guy and if we need to load up then we play Hughes and Hronek together. That is the plan. On the left side, it seems OEL will be kicking around for awhile longer, so we need that big stay a home Dman for the 3rd pairing and we also have Hirose to move into the 3rd pairing role.

We actually have 21 players for $84,168,750. Mikheyev, Poolman and Pearson show on IR. If Poolman and Mikhyev start with the team then that is 20 players. If the cap goes up to $86,500,000, then that gives us $2.3 million to sign Bear and Kravtsov. Or we can let Bear walk or trade his rights and sign Schenn. That extra $2.3 million should cover it. Also, I would bet big money that Pearson will be on LTIR, which would free up an additional $3.25 million in cap space. Also, they are actively shopping Garland, so I expect Garland to be traded as well. That's another $5 million. So we will have lots of cap space available to sign our RFA's plus a 3C and another Dman...

[Signing] Canucks sign Akito Hirose
Elias Pettersson replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Man, I'm sure Chicago wants a mulligan on that trade. Imagine if they had just kept the picks as well as Adam Boqvist. Columbus used those picks to draft Cole Sillinger and David Jiricek. Imagine if Chicago had Boqvist, Sillinger and Jiricek right now along with that extra $9.5 million in cap space from Jones contract. Huge mistake from management, but then they also got lucky with the lottery balls, so win some and lose some... -
Allvin said he wasn't concerned about the cap. Now we know why. He has inside info we don't have. With an extra $4 million in cap space, we are cap compliant even with Poolman on the roster, plus we can sign Bear and Kravtsov. Also, we can put Pearson on LTIR during the summer. I expect that to happen as I don't see any way he will be able to start the season on the roster. If we can move Garland which they are actively trying to do, then that should free up the cap space available to get a 3C and another Dman...

Edmonton fans are really pissed that they didn't win the cup. Wonder what will happen when Draisaitl walks in two years...

Since 1982, the Vancouver Canucks have won 2 President's trophies as the best team in the regular season, made the playoffs 23 times, won 18 playoff rounds and made the Stanley Cup finals 3 times. Since 1982, the Toronto Maple Leafs have won zero President's trophies, made the playoffs 23 times, won 14 playoff rounds and made the Stanley Cup finals zero times. The Canucks have been a million times more competitive than the Maple Leafs over the last 41 years...

Yes I agree. However, Bure was a 60 goal scorer and Kaprizov has never hit 50. Jovanovski never played to his #1 status in Florida while Dahlin looks like a Norris trophy candidate. So even though Kaprizov and Dahlin are the closest comparables they still are not the same. If Kaprizov hit 60 goals and 110 points this year and Dahlin was only at around 30 points do you think Buffalo makes that trade?
-
I think Kaprizov would be the closest comparable to Bure. Add a couple more years and what would Kaprizov get? Bure got traded for the #1 overall pick 5 years prior. Ed Jovanovski. Who was the #1 overall pick in 2018? Rasmus Dahlin. That is the comparable. So Pavel Bure today would be traded for Rasmus Dahlin...

MATHEW WOOD IS THE BEST PLAYER TO TAKE

So now you are comparing Barlow to Petey? I know exactly what a play driver is, I've been following hockey since the 80's. But thanks for the laugh... -
Who here is actually happy with the Hronek trade?
Elias Pettersson replied to Odd.'s topic in Canucks Talk
He didn't get a concussion in December. He was put in concussion protocol and then played the very next game 3 days later and played 24 minutes. You can't get a concussion and play the next game. It's actually against the rules. A Detroit beat writer was on Donnie and Dahli and confirmed that Hronek did not get a concussion. Here are the rules for a concussion: concussion-protocol.pdf If, after the evaluation noted above, the Club Physician determines that the Player is not diagnosed with concussion, the Player may return to play at the Club Physician’s discretion. Players who are diagnosed with a concussion should undergo an initial, brief period of physical and cognitive rest (e.g., 24-48 hours). Players can then become gradually and progressively more exposed to activities (a “graded return-to-play progression”) that do not provoke cognitive and physical symptoms (i.e., increased activity level should not bring on or worsen symptoms). An example of a graded return-to-play progression is provided below. Generally, each step should take 24 hours. However, the time frame at each step may vary with Player age, history, etc., and management must be individualized. Club Medical Personnel should monitor progression through the exertional stages as well as continue to consider concurrent morbidities (e.g., migraine, neck, mood, sleep, etc.). As for the trade, nobody even knew that Hronek was on the trade block. If they did there might have been a bidding war. Top 4 RHD's are wanted by every team. Allvin is on the record as saying he was following Hronek for over a year. Which means they targeted this specific player. When Yzerman let it beknown to Allvin he was available, he pounced on it and got his man. -
MATHEW WOOD IS THE BEST PLAYER TO TAKE
Elias Pettersson replied to hockeygod77's topic in Canucks Talk
Again, I am only pointing out what you stated in your original post that you felt that Barlow was a play driver. Everything you described in this post confirms that he is not. I never said he was a terrible player and the only reason I brought up Juolevi was because I was trying to make a comparison of a guy who was a finished product in junior and was a "safe" pick. I'm not saying that Barlow is going to be Juolevi, he could turn out to be a 30-goal scorer. The point I'm trying to make is that Wood has more upside and a higher ceiling because he hasn't even finished growing yet and he is already starting to dominate the NCAA at 17 years old, which is unheard of. The U18's is just one example, but you really have to question why they would give Wood a bigger role than Barlow when Barlow is a consensus top 10 pick in the draft and is ranked higher on almost every board than Wood. The coach obviously preferred Wood over Barlow and he didn't disappoint. He was literally Canada's 2nd best player, and it wasn't even close. I have a feeling Wood will be gone before we pick and Barlow will still be there. I could be wrong though... -

Sure, no one is arguing this. We are definitely right up against the cap. At least one forward will be moved. Maybe two. Garland is my bet to get moved. Will we have to attach a sweet to move him? Maybe. But it is what it is. It wasn’t going to be easy to clean up the mess. -

Elias Pettersson replied to hockeygod77's topic in Canucks Talk
What you described about Barlow is describing a player that is not a play driver. Scouts that have watched him are saying this. He can’t drive his own line. He doesn’t have the skill set to do that. If you think that Barlow is the better player than Wood, then why did Wood get 13 points at the U18’s and Barlow only got 4? That’s a pretty significant difference don’t you think? The only player who got more points than Wood is the consensus #1 overall pick next season. That tells you everything you need to know about his skill set. Wood is gonna be 6’4” and 220 pounds when he is fully grown. He has the hands of a guy who’s 5’10”. He trained with Connor Bedard for a year. Lived at his house. Not only is he a great shooter he’s also a very good passer. He looks like someone who can play centre full time in the NHL. He’s gonna be one of those guys that GM’s regret passing on. -

Elias Pettersson replied to hockeygod77's topic in Canucks Talk
Imagine thinking that Juolevi was going to turn out as good as McAvoy is now, a $9.5 million player. And stop blaming his stupid injuries for his waste of a career. The guy couldn’t even finish a bag skate without flopping on the ice and almost dying, which tells me he’s probably the worst conditioned hockey player in NHL history. He was the “safe” pick at the time, which a lot of players are categorized in if you actually follow hockey. If you don’t know what a safe pick is then I can’t help you. The fact that you think that every drafted prospect is either a finished product or they are not is quite confusing to me. How is every player that’s drafted a finished product? Have you ever heard the term “he needs more time to develop?” What the heck do you actually think that means? You think all drafted players are developed in the exact same way at 18 years old? Really? Matthew Wood is literally still growing. That does happen to some teenagers at 17-18. While other teenagers stop growing at 15. That happens too. You don’t think things like skating, shooting and handling the puck are affected when a player is literally outgrowing his skates and equipment? Olli Juolevi is the worst ever 5th overall draft pick in Vancouver Canucks history. Well we’ve only had three 5th overall picks but man is he the worst of the bunch. You know who the other two are? Your very own Elias Pettersson. And Rick Vaive. -

Barlow isn't a play driver. They are comparing him to Tyler Toffoli. Wood is being compared to Tage Thompson. Tony Ferrari - The Hockey News - Dec. 19th: "He is the definition of a meat and potatoes player who can play up and down a lineup, drive the center lane and finish plays on his stick. Barlow is a garbage man of sorts, cleaning up around the net with good hands in tight." Sam Cosentino - Sportsnet - Dec. 14th: "Plays with details in his game. Is a threat to score from distance and off the rush." Colby Barlow - Smaht Scouting - Nov. 25th: "This is a player that I don’t see being able to drive his own line. He has great hands in tight areas, and can unleash a bomb of a wrister, but to see him reach his potential, he’d benefit immensely from a centerman with vision and distribution skills." At the U18's he was greatly surpassed by Wood, who is an elite goal scorer and playmaker. Wood can do it all, including playing centre. Once he gets comfortable in his bigger body, he will be a force of nature. Wood is easily the better long term prospect, and it's not even close really.. -

The reference was more for the fact that Juolevi was basically a finished product while Sergachev and McAvoy were still growing, specifically McAvoy. Juolevi was the safe pick, which is the same with Barlow. Wood is the McAvoy of this draft, his upside is limitless. I'm sorry, but even without the injuries, Juolevi would not have been at McAvoy's level... -
Who here is actually happy with the Hronek trade?
Elias Pettersson replied to Odd.'s topic in Canucks Talk
I actually like Marino as a player. I'm not discounting his value at all. He plays a shutdown role with Graves on New Jersey. I'm sure he would have been a good partner for Hughes. However, Hughes has proven he can play with anyone, so our biggest priority was adding a 2nd pairing guy who can anchor the 2nd pairing for the next decade. Hronek can also play with Hughes if needed, run the power play, kill penalties and push 24 minutes a night. Overall. he has more value than Marino. OEL and Myers are short term solutions. Myers will be gone soon, if not this summer then next summer for sure. OEL is still a question mark. Not sure if he will get back to that 40 point player. At the very least he can play with Hronek and Hronek can be the offensive guy on that pairing. And OEL is not guaranteed to be around past this year either. Long term I like Hughes, Hronek and Hirose as our puck movers. The triple H team. So we need 3 defensive Dmen to compliment them. -
Coyotes lose vote for new arena - future unclear
Elias Pettersson replied to mll's topic in General Hockey Discussion
Doesn't Toronto own the territorial rights in that area? Hamilton is only like a 90-minute drive to Toronto. I thought that was the main issue with moving a team to Hamilton. Houston is 4 hours away from Dallas. San Antonio is even closer. They all have NBA teams, so I don't see an issue with saturating the market there. Dallas/Houston would make a great rivalry... -

Graves is a left shot D. Unless we get rid of some contracts we don't have the money for Graves. But I would love to see him partner with Hronek...
