[Proposal] Crouse for Boeser
Elias Pettersson replied to BabychStache's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I'd run to the airport if Arizona was giving us Crouse. The perfect player to have in the playoffs. Play him with Miller on the 2nd line and throw Hoglander on that line. -
Again, you are pointing out the PP as the reason for a player's success. This doesn't work as well in the playoffs when not as many PP's are called, especially in the later rounds when the better teams are playing. In the playoffs, I'll take the even strength scorer who knows how to backcheck ahead of any PP specialist. Eichel played better than McDavid, why can't you see that? Is it because you only look at the flash and dash and the total points scored? Is that how you are supposed to evaluate players? Eichel scored 12 points at even strength, McDavid scored 8. Eichel was a +9, McDavid was 0. Eichel had 6 blocks, McDavid had 3. You keep looking only at total points. Which is the easy way out and not a great way to evaluate someone's overall game. I have a hard time believing that McDavid can play the same way in a different, more responsible defensive structure, which is what you need to win playoff games. I'd love to see McDavid and Draisaitl playing under Tocchet. I wonder how many times both players would be benched for refusing to backcheck. Kuzmenko was scoring at will under Boudreau. As soon as Tocchet came in, he had to change his game which affected his play. The same would happen with McDavid and Draisaitl. If they actually want to win a cup then they will need to sacrifice their offence and point totals. Are they willing to do that? Will they find a coach who can convince them to do this? We will see...

Vegas put on a clinic in the 3rd period. I didn't see any high danger shots from the Oilers, except maybe one Bouch bomb that got through. McDavid was so frustrated he literally whiffed on a shot with like 2 minutes left. He literally took a shot and missed the puck. I started laughing after that. I'm like, is that all he has with 2 minutes left? He couldn't penetrate the Vegas defence because they know his schtick. He flies around trying to find an opening, but Vegas didn't give him one. He was basically a perimeter player for the entire 3rd period and without a power play he couldn't even get going. Crosby would have handled that alot differently. Same with Gretzky. Crosby would have literally charged the net like he always does and got his nose dirty. He would have scored a dirty goal from 3 feet out. He does that all the time. McDavid doesn't know where the crease is located. Gretzky would have set up shop behind the net and waited until Vegas made a mistake and would have set up Kurri for the game winner. Great players know how to win. They do whatever it takes. Not sure McDavid has that in him. I'd love for him to prove me wrong though. But last night didn't help his cause.

Skinner can only do so much when the players in front of him are playing pond hockey and the forwards refuse to backcheck. As you correctly stated, Edmonton allows alot more high danger chances than the other teams. I would bet alot of money that if you switched the goalies last night the result would have been the same...

Thanks for bringing the receipts. Edmonton can't buy a goal 5 on 5 but somehow it's the goalie's fault for them choking. Edmonton could have Patrick Roy in net and they still won't win a Stanley Cup until McDraisaitl learn how to score a goal with the same amount of players on the ice for both teams. Imagine thinking you have a shot at a cup by trying to outscore the opposition while having one more player on the ice than the other team. I mean, does Edmonton think the NHL are going to change the rules and allow them to play the entire game with an extra man on the ice?

I will stand by that statement until proven otherwise. What exactly has McDavid achieved in the NHL besides personal accomplishments? Hockey is a team sport. Until McDavid can prove he is a team first player and lead his team to victory, he will never be better than Crosby. I don't care how many points he scores using his super sonic power play. Just wait until Petey gets into the playoffs. You will see the difference. Next year will be the year. Petey's game is built for the playoffs...

Yes, I am. Isn't that the point? So, McDavid has zero fault for his team choking 2 years in a row? It's the rest of the team's fault? Doesn't McDavid play like 25 minutes a night? If your team has the most lethal powerplay in hockey history, it makes sense to orient your game towards that. You shouldn't fault a player or a team for playing to its strengths. This is what you said in regards to the Oilers and McDavid. You are making the point that McDavid is using the PP to try and win hockey games. We know that strategy doesn't work in the playoffs and last night was a perfect example of why. As you pointed out top playoff teams don't take alot of penalties, so why are the Oilers still trying to use that strategy? Are they not capable of scoring 5 on 5 enough to win a hockey game? Is McDavid not capable of changing his game in the playoffs? If not, then is that not his fault? McDavid had 20 points in the playoffs, 12 of them on the PP. In comparison, Eichel had 14 points in the playoffs, but only 2 points on the PP. So, at even strength Eichel is a better player. Why can't McDavid outscore Eichel at 5 on 5? You say it is not his fault, it is the team's fault. This is confusing to me. McDavid plays 25 minutes a night but can't outscore Jack Eichel 5 on 5. And this is supposedly not McDavid's fault, it is the teams fault. That makes no sense. What makes total sense is that 5 on 5 McDavid isn't actually the best player in the league. He can't even outscore Jack Eichel when it counts the most. Sorry, but McDavid is a product of his environment. Put him on a team that doesn't get alot of PP's and he's not even a 100-point player. He couldn't hold Crosby's jockstrap. Won't even get into the Petey comparisons. Petey is like a 100+ point player on a non-playoff team who could win the Selke trophy. That type of player is exactly what you need in the playoffs to win a Stanley Cup...

So we are not allowed to compare players? Isn't that what we do here on CDC on a daily basis? Of course they are different players, I never said they weren't. What I was pointing out was that at even strength Petey is more productive than Draisaitl and almost as productive as McDavid. If McDavid wants to keep playing the same way, trying to draw the opposition into taking penalties by challenging them at every opportunity, then he is going to end his career with no cups. So he has a choice to make. Either change your game somewhat, or just keep racking up those points in the regular season and get used to playing alot of golf in the summer. All superstars past and present have found a way to make it work in the playoffs and win cups. McDavid also needs to do this. I don't get why you think that McDavid's plan of trying to instigate penalties to use the PP to win games is some type of winning strategy. Vegas didn't take any penalties in the 3rd period last night. Teams that are cup contenders are usually more disciplined than the average team in the regular season. So, you would think that the Edmonton superstars would know this and change their game accordingly. Obviously they did not, and maybe they can't. How many times did the reporters ask McDavid and Draisaitl about their 5 on 5 play? And how many times did they come back and say they were fine 5 on 5, they scored 2 goals last night. Scoring 2 goals 5 on 5 isn't good enough to win hockey games. Vegas scored 4 goals 5 on 5. Usually the team scoring 4 goals beats the team scoring 2 goals. Unless McDavid can change his game and play more like Gretzky and Crosby in the playoffs and less like guys who are at the all-star game, he is not going to win any cups...

Don't worry Spook, I'm not going anywhere...

Vegas had 28 blocked shots, Edmonton had 14. So double. One team played actual playoff hockey, doing all the dirty things to win, the other team was running around trying to get the other team to take a penalty. Without that PP, McDavid is not even better than Petey. He is a huge benefactor of the way the Oilers play. If Petey was playing shinny hockey every game and was on that PP, he'd also get 150 points. Look at RNH. He's a 100-point player with that PP. Without it, he's barely getting 50 points. RNH got 47 points this year at even strength. Petey had 68. McDavid had 75. Draisaitl had 64. Petey actually had more even strength points this year than Draisaitl and only 7 less than McDavid. Think about that for a minute.

11th overall pick in the 2023 Entry Draft
Elias Pettersson replied to KyGuy123's topic in Canucks Talk
9 hits in 27 years is 33%. So we have a 33% chance of hitting on a really good player. Those are pretty good odds. In comparison, Benning had 6 top 10 picks (including 2 top 5 picks) and hit on 2 of them. That's also 33%. -
I disagree. The Oilers of the 80’s needed the first 3 years to build out their team. They were still teenagers the first two years. By year 4 they were a powerhouse and only lost to one of the greatest teams ever in NYI. McDavid and Draisaitl have already been around 8+ years and still can’t figure out how to play 5 on 5 and play actual defence. Without their PP they are barely a playoff team. Gretzky’s Oilers did not have to rely on their PP to win games. They dominated 5 on 5. Actually, they dominated 4 on 4 as well. So much so that the NHL had to implement “The Gretzky Rule”. No more 4 on 4 for offsetting penalties. Unless these current Oilers can find a goalie who can stop pucks and some defencemen who can play defence, I don’t see them ever winning a cup. They have a 3 year window left. Once Draisaitl and McDavid are UFA’s I think this team will be dismantled. There is no way the Oilers can afford to keep both if they keep playing pond hockey and racking up 130-150 points. And even if they try they will be the Leafs anyways and have no money to pay anyone else.

Eichel had a great game, especially defensively. He outplayed both McDavid and Draisaitl. Edmonton will never win a cup playing pond hockey. And with AHL goaltending and an AHL defence. Nurse at $9.25 million for another 7 years is probably the worst contract in the NHL. Maybe only slightly better than Huberdeau.
