Usually hospitals run fairly close to capacity on an everyday basis combating all the other illnesses that are happening. So when you suddenly get thousands more every 2 days needing treatment or diagnoses you simply don’t have the resources or beds or staff to handle such a drastic increase in the sick.

New report coming out that the virus can live in air up to 3 hours and on surfaces for up to 3 days. https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/487110-tests-indicate-coronavirus-can-survive-in-the-air Italy reports 200 more deaths in 24 hours for a total of 887 deaths and 10000 total confirmed cases. https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/487124-italy-confirms-nearly-200-people-died-from-coronavirus-in-24-hours-report.

3% is not low at all my friend, if 1 million people get infected 30 thousand die. If the numbers hit average yearly flu infections which is 26 million in the US alone that’s 780 thousand possible deaths. That’s not taking into account the probabilities and the consequences of the healthcare systems being overrun. It’s definitely not going to be the end of the world but it is dangerous. It doesn’t only affect older people it affects anyone with underlying conditions which especially in the US is a high number with their obesity affecting 45% of their population. The mortality rating of under 40 is around 0.02% and above 40 it climbs quite dramatically through the age groups. But the point isn’t that you won’t die if you’re under 40 it’s that you have a very strong possibility of transmitting it to someone you love.

I feel the need to get some facts straight about this virus. Not trying to cause panic or fear monger but people should take this serious and be sufficiently worried enough to take the proper precautions. As of right now the WHO has a mortality rating of 3.4 percent https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/coronavirus-death-rate/#who-03-03-20. Which it’s early but as that stands is a mortality rate significantly higher than the flu which is around 0.01 average. The basic reproduction number (R0) of Covid-19 is 2.2. In comparison the flu hovers around 1.3. Any number over 2 causes the capability of exponential growth. We have no vaccine and according to experts a vaccine is likely 12-18 months out and that alone would be break records for the speed of a vaccine being developed . The traditional speed for a vaccine development is 15-20 years. As of right now this virus has a mortality rating higher in all age groups than any influenza virus we currently deal with so any comparison to the average flu is wrong. https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/coronavirus-age-sex-demographics/. As China and South Korea has shown this virus is containable, but the measures China took simply won’t work in any western country because we don’t live under a authoritative regime with circumstances being vastly different. What can work is the measures we’re already seeing take place in harsh lock downs and public gatherings being postponed or cancelled completely. This new study released yesterday shows that the virus can live in the air for up to 3 hours, it also shows the longevity of the virus on other surfaces as well. https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.03.09.20033217v1 Now keep in mind that this is an early report so it’s not 100% confirmed yet. Those comparing this to SARS are actually closer to being right than the people comparing it to the flu because Covid-19 is actually a part of the SARS family not the influenza family. Anyways that’s all for now. Be careful, think of those around you and don’t panic.
-
Yes that’s true, it’s not really comparable though as SARS only infected 8000 people total and this has infected over 120000 in 3 months.
-
Influenza has a mortality rate of 0.01%. Covid-19 has an average mortality rating of 3.4% according to WHO. Get your facts right before spreading misinformation. It’s dangerous.

All good, sadly that makes me doubt the capabilities of the Canadian healthcare systems. If you don’t learn from history you’re doomed to repeat it. And what we are seeing around the world is the effects of originally thinking this wasn’t serious and an overreaction. I just wish the Canadian health care system could see beyond what is happening locally and look at the big picture. I hope you’re right and I wish you and the rest of the Canadian health care professionals the best of luck if you’re wrong. Cheers.

At this point countries are being cancelled

Good to note that there are 2 separate strains identified by Chinese scientists. The L strain and the S strain. The L strain made up 70% of cases and was the more aggressive severe one while the S strain was more mild. It should also be noted that you can be infected by one strain at a time or both at the same time. So it is possible to be infected from the mild S strain and then later become infected with the more severe L strain.

Media sensationalism? These are the facts coming out from the best health experts all over the world. This is way beyond opinion vs opinion my dude.
-
The denial is insane to me, as if anyone can justify countries going into full lockdown and the WHO labeling this as a global pandemic putting the world on highest alert as a scare tactic. In what way would that benefit the world? It’s mind boggling.
-
The thing to keep in mind about the Spanish flu is it came in waves. 3 separate waves to be exact with the second wave being by far the most deadly one. We are currently in the first wave of COVID-19. Don’t panic but be sufficiently worried and think of the others around you. The more people this virus infects the higher possibility of a mutation. It’s a bad idea to think of a virus that we’ve never seen before and have no vaccine for as similar to the flu.
-
Literally no one is saying to do that, but calling it fake news is incredibly ignorant. Countries don’t go on full lock down for the laughs.
-
Dude just because people give a $&!# about their parents and grandparents doesn’t mean they’re overreacting. Get over yourself and stop spreading misinformation.

15% of cases require hospitalization, it will overwhelm the healthcare systems and cause more people to die because of it. That’s exactly what is happening in Italy. Just because I’m young and not going to die from it doesn’t mean I shouldn’t care about everyone around me. What happens if I get it and give it to my father with diabetes because I don’t know I have it? A lot of cases people are asymptomatic but are still highly infectious. Don’t panic but not taking this seriously will cause much more damage than taking it seriously.
-
Just because it hasn’t exploded here doesn’t mean it won’t. It seems ignorant to assume what’s happening in Italy and other countries can’t come here and is overblown. The things that are happening around the world because of this virus are things we haven’t seen before in our lifetime. Why on earth would countries possibly cripple their and the global economy just for the sensationalism?

The NHL and the NBA share a lot of arenas, if the NHL don’t suspend the season tonight I expect they will in the coming weeks.

Yes but Boeser is a 20-30 goal scorer right now, you can’t be sure that the prospects will turn into that. Podkolzin is a year away still cause of his contract. Lind and Hoglander are good prospects but they still aren’t a guarantee as with any prospect that hasn’t played an NHL game. I’d sooner trade hoglander or Lind+ over Boeser. -

Why is there talk of trading Boeser again? He solidified all our lines last night, the one extra top 6 forward made us have 4 very serviceable lines. It’s a very bad idea to trade Boeser unless you would like loui Eriksson back in the top 6. Adding Toffoli doesn’t make Boeser expendable it just makes the team that much stronger. Yes we need another defensman but I don’t think you sacrifice your RW depth for that. Especially with the good prospects on D we have in the pipeline. -
Fixing Team Defensive Structure - What does Green need to do?
Petey40 replied to wallstreetamigo's topic in Canucks Talk
A 2-3 system with the third forward supporting the defensman carrying the puck might work better for break outs instead of leaving them to fend for themselves against the 2 man forecheck we’re seeing used against us. A bigger 5 man box to cut off around the board passes that teams tend to use against canucks a lot because canucks will always lose that race. And the bigger less passive box would allow them to pressure the puck carrier much quicker when they receive passes and make it more difficult for the other team to make plays. Taking away time and space instead of collapsing is the biggest thing they need to work on I would say. And then a lot of has to do with not losing your man, which we saw happen twice last game. That tends to come down to the players rather than the coaches systems. Canucks are a heavy forecheck team and they have the ability to win physical battles and board battles so that physicality and high pressure should be applied in the defensive zone as well IMO.
