  1. Jake is not measured by the same stats that many of his team mates are. The number of posts on this thread testify to that. Often the refrain is questioning his hockey IQ? If that is the case go up and down the roster as I see many examples of questionable plays. If Jake stays with Vancouver I think he has to carve a d-side roll for himself. His offence might evolve from that. I am also starting to wonder whether a different coach could do more with him.
  2. As young as the core is there are vets on this team. With that said this group is not playoff quality. As you rightfully pointed out the number of quality scoring chances given up is outrageous. Less than 3 minutes left in a tie game on they try a breakout pass cross ice instead of up the boards. While better than last game the intercepts in the neutral zone was high. Demko saves them again and a inexperienced Sens team struggles with execution. That is the only reason the Canucks got 2 points. Glad to see Motter back he was his old self. Solid game.
  3. I have cautioned against coaching change until a review after the season. After the game last night I simply cannot say that anymore. It was one of the weakest displays I have seen all year. To say that the score flattered the Canucks is a gross understatement. The d-side systems and awareness were confused. I can’t see what the coaching is trying to build towards? When players look confused and routinely make desperation, risky plays, one has to look at coaching. 2 weeks or even a month into a season you can write off a game like last night. That is no longer the case. They talk about coaches losing the room. Last night’s game was a indicator that this is happening with the Canucks. Sutter will get the Flamers into the playoffs. Vancouver will not be there. Canucks have to take the rest of the season to rebuild their game. Trade those players who don’t fit and play prospects. I would now argue that Baumgartner has to go. Demko cannot become another Marky. He cannot cover for a very poor d-side game. I thought B-Mac was having a very good game on the 6-7 shifts he had????
  4. Thought puck support had improved a lot in the past month.
  5. PPG plays such a big part. Hogz came in at mid season form but his play has not tapered in the slightest. His scoring ops are there every game, every shift. At some point his scoring consistency kicks in. He could easily go on a scoring streak.
  6. For sure, you always wonder about utilization. However if it was only about his coaching then you would have though another org would have acquired him. His value moves up and down more than the stock market.
  7. What Sawchuk did in his era is unbelievable. When you consider all the support that tenders get today, even in the Hasak era, Sawchuk was incredible. Always struggling with health but still produced.
  8. I think Sutter will get the most out of Calgary that there is. Marky probably carries them into the playoffs. Canucks simply give up to many shots. That said I think their d-side game is improving. I might be simply over optimistic which is likely. Actually hope that it is clear by April 12th that they are out. That will give JB the ability to deal some vets off. Finish the year with more TOI to the prospects.
  9. The d-side is still the Laffers Achilles heal. Canucks won't make playoffs so I am cheering for the NYI. All about Trotz and the superior coaching he does. The NYI's can play anyway they have too.
  10. When a player like Meyers winds up for a shot where does the tender focus, especially if he shots on the fly? Sure, he struggles in the d-zone at times but IMHO he is a legit 2nd pairing dman. There were times last night that the entire Canuck group were collapsing down on Demko. They were very lucky that some of those shots didn't hit the net. I suspect a good number of Oiler shots were not seen by Demko.
  11. Bailey’s development is further along and I agree that he shows a lot more. I like Bailey’s straight line game.
  12. IMO a big part of Jake’s future will be on the d-side playing a heavy game. CUP competitive teams have to have a heavy game and the Canucks are not good enough yet. Jake does have offensive upside. He has a superior shot and excellent board battle. His limitations are mental.
  13. Loved Jake’s hit on the ref. Woke the zebras up. The ref hanging over the bar to watch the play on the first Canuck goal was classic.
  14. Game within the game. The Horvat line was huge. Pearson and Virtanen had solid games. I think Jake has to be more of a trigger man as his shot is superior. I think he looks for the play to much. His corner work is superior. How many times did he set up point shots. Pearson has a history of ppg droughts and he cannot buy a goal. If he and Virt broke out the Canucks would be a different team. No way I can agree with a #1 PP playing an entire 2 minutes. IMO it cannot be justified as it erodes team unity. This is not a serious playoff team and sacrificing the #2 PP is very bad development. Demko won the game and was the d-side anchor. Elder and Meyers stood out. All the anti Meyers stuff is ???? Even with Hughes ppg I think Meyers has been the all around best d-man. Benn played better but he should still rotate with OJ. I expect him gone by the TDL.
  15. IMHO neither Baer or Erickson should ever dress for the Canucks again. They are not in the long term plans and the younger prospects should get that TOI.
  16. Shorty all the way!!! Hughson has gone over to the other side. He plays nice in Van because he probably wants to retire here on his TO pension.
  17. I have a different take. Since the Canucks likely don't make playoffs Hamonic's opportunity to showcase himself during playoff games is lost. He will be a UFA and needs a new contract with money and term. I actually think he could waive his NMC to get that opportunity with a playoff team. He holds all the cards so a willingness to waive can have caveats to protect his landing place. I have been very impressed with Hamonic's play of late. I am actually hoping JB can resign him. A RD of Hamonic-Meyers-Tryamkin would be impressive.
  18. I actually think Gaudette is learning more this season than last. If he was not generating chances I would be more concerned. Likely no playoffs so play him thru and reassess. The NHL is a hard master and there are always potential replacements.
  19. Joulevi is eligible. Maybe Green thought the vet presence would help stabilize the d-side. Since I don't think playoffs are in the cards I would rotate OJ-Benn-Edler. I do think Benn will go to a contender by April 12 and that OJ finishes the season playing. Teams interested in Benn will want to see some games.
  20. IMHO the game rests with the d-core. If they have a strong game the Canucks likely win. Credit due they have been playing better hockey for about 3 weeks. Hamonic and Meyers have been standouts. The odds are still stacked against making playoffs. The trade deadline is April 12th. Canucks should know well in advance whether they will have a post season. Frankly I am hoping they make a strong run but fall short. It will free JB up to move some vets for picks. Possibly enough CAP to acquire a UFA. If he can move some vets out then the roster can play prospects to finish the season.
  21. Fine to add a little caution and reality to the conversation. Being optimistic about Gadjovich is also healthy as he was a high 2nd rounder. Straight from junior to the AHL and the attending pro maturation is great for Gadjovich and Lind. In the 'olden days' of Vancouver Canuck hockey those boys would have been thrown to the wolves already. Vancouver has never seriously developed players. Virtanen and Gaunce I guess. What would have happened to Hutton's career if he had 2 years in the AHL?
  22. Many people forget that it was Mike Gillis who led the charge to expose Allen Eagleson. Eagleson ripped Gillis off like he did so many others and Gillis took him to court and recovered his money. In that process his reputation both as a hockey player and a lawyer were attacked. You have to respect the guy.
  23. I have always thought that the team could have been seriously tweeked in 2012 but when it didn't happen there had to be a rebuild started. I am not blaming ownership because they have imperatives that fans are not aware of. The Acquilinis are the best owners the org have ever had.
  24. Amazing to think what Tryamkin might do considering the huge upgrade in talent on the Canucks since he left. Some nights he was a one man show trying to defend on a pretty bad roster. He will love his 2nd go around.
  25. Benn had a rough night last night. I actually rank Hamonic-Meyers-Hughes-Schmidt-Edler-Benn. IMHO Green should be rotating Edler-Benn-Joulevi thru the remaining games. Edler isn't that bad but a rest now and then doesn't hurt. I don't know how Hughes is being coached but any player who stays out for a full PP gets benched IMO. Hughes is doing this on and off the PP. He should be reined in. It is the type of thing that eats away at team morale. Kinda shocked that it hasn't been dealt with.
