I bet they try to resign Hamonic and play SChmidt on the left side. Hard choices coming up.
-
Edler has played a lot of hard minutes as the top d-man in Vancouver for a decade. A big question I have is how many minutes a game will he need to maintain his effectiveness. He played lots of 25 minutes games and played at a high level. Can he do the same at 12-15 minutes? At 34 does he see himself to young to drop into a bottom pairing? Will he demand a multi year renewal? It might come down to a choice between signing Eddie and Hamonic.

I said in another thread that this kid has top line potential. He was driving play last night in a major way.
-
I agree. I think Green has tried a lot to beat the losing streak but has not sat Rous. Maybe they are trying to package him as a d-side player. I doubt it sells. Since playoffs are not likely but still possible they play the more predictable player. IMHO it is a mistake. The #1 priority should be prospect development and that means TOI for the taxi squad ex LE.

Thought Jake had another solid game. 5 hits, a sweet one on Matthews in particular. Jake thru a couple of nice ozone passes which should have resulted in points. If Pearson moves on I would love to see Podz-Bo-Jake. A heavy line with speed.
-
Bang on! He has been the #1 for many years. Van has so many d- prospects I don't know how they keep Eddy. They have to get TOI. If the vet core is Meyers, Shultz, Huggy can Edler outplay Hamonic? Does Hamonic get resigned over Eddie? Some how they have to make room for Joulevi.
-
Schmidt is long term with this club. I don't see him coming out. While Edler might stay on for another year or two he is an option if he needs the rest. Benn is not long term so he would be my first choice to sit. Hamonic is really coming on but he is another who likely leaves. I think the Canucks have to have a plan. Ideally they rotate Joulevi, Edler and Benn. Likely that a injury takes care of the problem.

When the game goes off script the refs aren't any different than the HNIC crew. Their messaging is all about TO consumption. Matthews gets away with a series of cross checks, Nylander flipping the puck out gets a review when it is obvious and of course Hoglander's goal id waived off. I guess we can be happy that video review is the backup referee. To be fair Jake did I nice clip on Matthews and it wasn't called. The big boys came thru. BB, JT and Bo all had very good games. Bo looked more engaged than he has for awhile. Demko played another above average game IMHO. Observations: Virtanen had another solid game. Not only was he engaged physically (5 hits) but his d-side game was solid. Jake can pass the puck. Any luck and his line mates get shots off of his set ups. I thought Hamonic was Van's strongest d-man. He was very physical infront of his net. I thought he might get penalized for some aggressive crosschecks but was not. He was pretty consistent with his passing out of the d-zone and used the boards when necessary. Couple of nice shots on goal. IMO Hoglander has top 3 potential. He was driving his line a lot last night. His goal was simply icing on the cake. He could easily be getting 2-3 points a game the way he is playing. 2 goals off the rush last night. That hasn't happened for a while. Laffer defense was having trouble with the outside speed. IMO the Canuck skill sometimes slows the game down as they maneuver for advantage. I cannot remember the last time I saw Petey come down the wing and crank a shot on net. The 4th line had a solid night. The 3rd line is a challenge.

If it isn't John & John it isn't the same. The local guys should do the games. The Laffers bring in their people and slant the whole broadcast for their audience. HNIC has become so politically correct that hockey has become secondary. If MacLean comes on I switch to another program until he is gone. Don Cherry is probably sitting in some Legion somewhere tipping a few pops and thanking God he no longer has to put up with the BS.

Jim Benning's mid-season press conference

I think a healthy exercise might be going back 6 years and looking at the roster of that day and then digging deeper into the prospect pool. It was a wasteland! Sure JB has made some questionable deals but that conclusion has hindsight benefit. He had limited option and had to build by the draft. Then he had to deal with the lottery bumping him down the pick ladder regularly. The COVID generated CAP freeze then screws his signing flexibility. He probably lost $4 mil in space. My biggest critic of JB is the lack of assets coming back on vets leaving the org. Part of that he had no control but I feel he has buckled to an extent by fans callling for faster win/loss gains than should be expected. Overall I think JB has done a decent job. Willing to give him two more years. -
IMHO as much as Van fans talk a finesse game aka the Twins they really love a tough physical player. Jake was drafted because,in part, the fans were screaming for size and toughness up front. It is a fair request as the team has historical been undersized. When Jake cuts to the net and scores by knocking defenders aside the crowds scream. The fact that other Canucks don’t do this with regularity doesn’t seem to register. IMO Jake is judged by a different standard. I think Jake should play a more physical game just as I do for many of the other forwards who actually do less than he does. Until Van can play a heavy offensive game as well as their ‘run & gun’ game they will not be a serious CUP contender. Add Podz, Big Mac, Gadjovich, Lind and maybe Bailey. Even Motte who is smaller played the type of game needed. Move on from Roussel and Pearson.

2 goals was a nice outcome for Jake. I was also impressed with his play away from the puck. Finishing checks and good positioning. His defensive play on a back check prevented a big scoring op. Jake ranks right near the top for Van forwards on scoring ops off the rush.

Top forward: Shotgun Jake Top d-man: Tyler Meyers - actually he has been the top dman for the last 2 months. Honourable mention to Hamonic who shows steady improvement. Top player: Demko: He didn’t steel the game but was a dominating influence. He is #1 in Vancouver and good on him considering the tough season the team has been slogging thru. I thought most of the vets played an uninspired game. Many mental errors which would have burned them except for Demko. The defensive awareness was better but that seems to go by the wayside fairly quickly when they break up ice. Elder had a tough night. Since a win doesn’t make a season they have to stay the course. Play the prospects regularly. Rotate Roussel, Virtanen, Gaudette, Beagle, Benn out. I would even add Pearson but fear it might hurt his trade value. All these players have value but their consistency is questionable. Virtanen and Gaudette could still be with the club in 2-3 years but the rest won’t. Play the rookies and prospects. JB has to re confirm the goal of CUP contention in 2-3 years. No deviation and no caving to sports writers and fans calling for desperation moves. Making playoffs this year is inconsequential and I argue a negative outcome if it reinforces a solely ‘run & gun’ offence. The Canucks have flirted with the ability to play a solid d-side game but have a lot of work to do still.

The biggest dairy in my area milks 500 cows. There is currently a Chilliwack producer moving here. I was a dairy farm supplier of various inputs for many years. To put this in context to an extent. Chico, California, a valley of about 65,000 acres has +/- 500,000 dairy cattle. I was involved in an effluent issue in our area a few years back so my numbers might not be exact. Cali has 1.74 million dairy cattle. Big time industry even tho many producers there are moving to less expensive states. Quota allowed many undercapitalized farmers the ability to get into dairying. That was a good thing but it raised the cost of milk as the value of the quota was included into their cost structures. As a western separatist my beef with this industry is the outright favouritism eastern producers enjoy. The industry is broadly split into two major revenue streams. White milk and higher end processed products like cheese, yogurts etc. Western Canada is not even self sufficient in the basic white milk category. The value added side of cheese and other processed product is almost all done in Quebec and Ontario. I cannot see why any politician in Western Canada could contenance such a situation. Dairying is a fundamental building block to the health of the overall agri industry. It is a tremendous consumer of material inputs. The money they generate spreads thru the communities they reside in. The feed they source for their dairy herds allow surrounding farms to plant higher value feed crops. It encourages better crop rotation.

I wasn't questioning the value of the family farm. The point I was trying to make (badly) was scale. What we considered a family farm years ago is not really there anymore. Many family farms have millions invested. They pretty much have to stay in business. Again, what I see happening on the prairies is pretty impressive. I think it is significant when farmers can generate enough cash that they can invest in tech to improve their operations. That wasn't the case years ago. EVen a visit to a modern dairy is pretty impressive. When you can adjust the feed ration to an individual cow by a ID embedded in a ear that is impressive.

The future of the NHL is not so dependent on gate receipts. That has been the strength of the Canadian franchises. Frankly most Americans have no idea where Quebec City is but they sure know where Phoenix is. Add Florida to that. This is important if the NHL dream of a major media contract is to be realized. A contract in the billions not millions of $. A contract that delivers $5 to $10 million to the CAP of each NHL team. While I can see another NHL team in southern Ontario I do not in Quebec. As much as I detest the Laffers I also realize this is a Top 10 market in NA. Quebec could not support a NHL franchise years ago and I doubt if they can now.

How is farming any different than any other business? Nice to suggest that defending the family farm is in everyone's interest but the definition is questionable. I enjoy watching the Prairie Farm Report. This show travels across the prairies featuring different farmers and how the innovate on equipment and crops. There are lots of family farms that farm 5,000 to 10,000 acres. They have millions in land and equipment. Hardly the neighbourhood c-store. What always impresses me about these farms is how they are bringing tech into their operations. Bigger farms generate the cash flow that allows them to invest more in tech. As a kid dairies in my area milked 50 head. Today that base level is at 200 head. The money invested to do that is in the millions. Marketing boards shelter producers but also allow inefficiency. It is odd that the largest farmers in BC never get discussed in this sector. Forestry still generates massive investment and employs 10's of thousands. Gypo loggers under contract, still invest millions in equipment. Their treatment is often very questionable.

Investing in the stock market - Discussion

Excellent points. I've read Graham and Bogle as well. My fundamentals are building a portfolio which generates consistent cash flow thru dividends. I barbell to an extent by targeting about 25% to growth stocks with a capital gain upside. I consider any stock that yields less than 3% a growth stock. Total return (TR) has to exceed 10%. IMHO Bitcoin and many of the SPACS are gambling pure and simple. SPACS are touted as the retail investors opportunity to access venture capital scenarios previously unavailable to them. Sounds good but the reality is the vast majority of people buying into this do not have the knowledge or skills to make solid judgements. It is hard enough in the first place to filter news or hype about blue chip stocks let along high risk ventures which have a massive failure rate. To me this market is a clear reflection of government involvement in capital markets by destroying the bond market and forcing people further out onto the risk curve. They have primed all of this by QE and by giving money to millions of people who have no better use for it than gambling in the stock market. Some will be very successful but the vast majority will lose. -

I've used XSB-T in the past with good success. Not very volatile and yields 2.3%. Check the yield as it has been awhile. Pays monthly. -
It is a real leap of faith for a vet to dramatically change their game from what got them to the NHL. When Clark got Marky he was a bit lost. IMHO Marky's size and athletism plays to his positioning in the net.
-
McDonough has the 2PP RW in his sites. Petey on #1. Actually EP40 had better keep practicing because this kid can fire the puck! Hoping he is in Utica next year.
-
Where is Gadjovich going to slot in. He is having a great year to date. Big guy and he likes the front of the net!
-
There hasn't been much offence on the 2nd line for some weeks now. Long before Virtanen slotting in there. Your bang on that Hoglander and Gaudette looked great together. Gaudette was flying las game. Either one of those two have the ability to blow a game wide open. Their both due for big ppg games. I think Bo is playing injred. His FO % has really tanked.
