Why wouldn't we have the expectation that Rathbone will reach 6' and 195-200 pounds? He is 21 and a good weight program does that for him. Didn't Bieksa play at 195 and he wasn't 6'. Not suggesting Rathbone has to be super physical. He just has to be able to battle for position infront of the net. Stecher actually did a decent job but simple could not handle the big forwards if he lost position.

I don't pay attention to the Euros but the Americans now have 75 million vaccinated or 235 of their population. In Canada we have 526,000 thousand or 3.6% fully vaccinated. Doses are coming but doctors are saying the rollout is bad. I don't understand how this could be an issue since they have had since March last year for planning???

I see your thinking and you could be right. Green had a couple of decent ppg years. Eventually he had to alter his game to stay in the NHL. Does that make him bitter or does it embrace the idea that a player has to have that awareness and flexibility? As you said we don’t know. Years ago we had my son’s Bantam team in Van for Provincials. Two of the coaches went to a lounge while I babysat? They end up meeting Rick Lee who was the Canuck coach at the time. They have a couple of drinks. Lee says bring the boys to the practice next day. Lee was a first class act and willing to talk coaching. Why am I telling this story? Not sure. Lee had a good NHL career but frustrated by the Laffer futility. His coaching time was almost up with Van. Lots of reason to blow my coaches off but he didn’t. Green played hockey in Trail before the WHL and had world champion SmokeEaters as coaches. Those guys were famous team players. I never heard stories of Green being a prima dona. I don’t know Travis on a personal basis but my family knows his family in Castlegar. Solid, down to earth, nice people.

Green played 970 NHL games at a 0.47 ppg which is above the norm by anyone's book. It is the coach's job to manage every player. Green often talks about the influence Al Arbour had on his hockey coaching. In an aborted season like this one I think it is a stretch to suggest that Green is losing it. 3 years of steady progression with a very young core. Who knows if there is something in his personality that won't let him take the team further. It will be Benning who will have to make that call. 24 games at 8 - 14 - 2. They have ran the spectrum of 7 - 1 win versus 7-1 losses. A leading scorer who has hit a league leading number of cross bars. A key defender, Hamonic, who has played 3 games? Arguably the worse sched in the NHL to start a season. It sounds like I am making excuses but I think there is a lot of truth to suggest that coach Green, who was the toast of the town, last summer during CUP play, has not lost his cred. The season is half done, their are not likely to make playoffs, play out the season. Deal players who are not in the long term plans, develop and evaluate, rotate the prospects thru the lineup. Worry about the coaching staff after the season is over. Draft a top ten player. Sign Podz and Tryamkin asap. Love to see Tryamkin play 10 games this year.

If politicians were serious about improving the human condition they would improve the skills they learn in school to help them earn a living. The biggest topic would be financial literacy. A solid understanding of budgeting and the long term cost of debt and the varying cost of different debt instruments should be mandatory. Even at the grade school level students should be given a fundamental understanding of how businesses work. When you see the many exploitive adverts in day to day life and you see friends and family on a debt treadmills it is depressing. I actually think that politicians, of all stripes, don't want a financially savvy population because they will be called to account to easily. Of course a financially savvy electorate would also quickly realize how underqualified the vast majority of politicians are for their positions.

(Rumour) Virtanen on the trade block
Boudrias replied to Wayne Glensky's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
sounds like this deal ain't happen. So what is Friedman going to do with his HNIC air time if not dwell in this speculation? I highly doubt JB or Anaheim bring Eliotte into their inner circles. -
If I thought this group was ready for prime time I might be more into a coaching change. Ultimately it has to be Green's choice about his assistant coaches. My biggest issue is on the d-side. Does that mean Baumgartner goes? I suspect all the coaches sit in on strategy sessions and all likely sign off on what they are trying to do. Early in the season the d-men were pinching regularly and getting caught without being backed up. Even now they will come deep into the ozone if the offensive chance presents itself. Are they supposed to quit that? Most NHL teams do what Vancouver is trying to do. Much of what is going wrong is execution. IMHO many Canuck fans took last years run as a sign that this group was much further along the development curve than they actually were. Pundits point out that Markstrom was making them look better than they were. Fans accept that and then call for serious changes like trades or coaching changes??? Miller was the toast of the town last year and now fans want to move him almost as bad as they do Virtanen. In my mind Van plays out the season with the existing coaches. Sounds boring but continue development and evaluation. Rotate the prospects thru the lineup and give them TOI. Trade vets who do not factor in the future as the opportunities present themselves. At the end of the year review the coaching, as I am sure is done each year. It appears Van will draft another top 10 pick. Get Pods and Tryamkin signed. Love to see Tryamkin play the last 10 games of the season. Canucks are not a serious playoff team so no panic moves are required. Green is in his 4th NHL coaching season. Every year to this one he has shown improvement in the teams performance. In this Covid aborted season I suggest some latitude is warranted. I don't see the players quitting on him. I do see a young core frustrated with the lack of results but that is more a maturation process. Another issue being ignored is the Canuck opening schedule that did them absolutely no favors.

IMHO there is no point in moving Jake now versus waiting until Van can get a deal. Does a different coach, if Green leaves, get more from Jake? Jake has only had to pro coaches in his career. Does a bigger deal with Jake as a part get a better deal? Considering that Jake has probably been on the market for at least two years the NHL managements knows Benning’s thinking. Benning should string this out thru March and should not succumb to pressure. Change for change sake is a ugly road to take.

When I think of Lindros it is the WJC the year he played. A man among boys and was he ever dominant. The Euro kids must still have nightmares about that Tourny. Amazing how far NHL coverage has come from back in those days. I've watched some of the retro games and honestly find them lacking to a degree. Today's game is far more sophisticated.

He was playing on Horvath's line.

Looking out 2-3 years and considering the need and availability I don't have a problem moving players out. I think you mentioned resigning Sutter which I would agree with. Pearson, Rooster, Benn and Hamonic if he would waive his NMC. I am on the fence with Virtanen and Gaudette. They were both flying last night. If there is a coaching change I would be interested in seeing how they would play in a new environment. No hurry with those two. Off topic: Quinn: You mentioned Pat Quinn earlier and I had to smile. Their running that 'Best Hits' thing on SN. Not to many of the hits from yesteryear. I remember the HNIC game when Quinn hit Orr. The Bruins went nuts and they tried to kill Quinn. Of course the gutless Laffers of that era stood aside and watched. Another crushing hit by Scott Stevens on Eric Lindros. That pretty much finished Lindros.

Jake had an excellent game last night. Multiple scoring ops. I thought the goal mouth play was in. They never even looked at the video. Keep all the lineups as is. Virtanen was playing physical and retrieving pucks.
-
Thought Miller had a solid game. Thought he made Gaudette’s game more effective. Top 3 lines were all a threat.
-
A solid game from the Canucks which yielded no points. At this point that is almost secondary. The remix on the lineups was solid. All forward lines played well. Hoglander with EP 40, Virtanen dominated at times with Horvat and Miller re-energized Gaudette who had multiple chances. Unfortunately my negative is Roussel. Demko was a standout. Edler had a tough game. Half the season is gone. Play it out. Develop and evaluate. Move vets if the return is worth it. Rotate the young players thru the lineup. Firing the coaches has no point unless the players shut it down which they do not appear to have done. The players and coaches are not naive they know changes are inevitable at seasons end. Part of the maturation process for the young core is the realization that their play has consequences not just for themselves but for those in the org. There is no point in desperation trades. The fans can fret away but their level o knowledge is often questionable and since filling the seats is a moot point Aqualini can wait it out. Making changes has down side risk especially if the replacements are no better.

You wonder sometimes about who is running the hen house? A councilman in Kamloops hits his city paid expense account for hundreds of thousands of dollars over 5 years. No accountability as there were no checks and balances. Top management in the IHA and Fraser Health caught living high off their expense accounts and that goes away. When you read about the low stipends paid to elected people in local government it sounds good but I suggest you look at the expense accounts as well.

An American passenger jet was buzzed by a UFO yesterday. The audio was on MSN. No news since. Pilots were saying it was cigar shaped and moving fast.????

I think your point about Calgary is bang on. If body language means anything it looks like Johnny Hockey wants out. IMHO Vancouver has far more potential. Benning has drafted far better than Calgary. Both of us have been around long enough to understand the history of this franchise. More often that not one has to think previous managements went to the Province each morning to get their direction for the day. Now with social media management has to deal with another influencer. The current management group has been sensitive to these forces to a certain degree. I suggest the lateness of the rebuild was due to a less than coherent cry for one more shot at a CUP back in 2012-13. All this aside I think Benning has done a decent job with another opportunity in the next draft to pick up a couple of top end players. Likely a top 10 pick. Staying the course is a hard job for Benning to hold on to. Lots of pressure and many value judgements on potential and existing talent. Significant money decisions on who and how much to pay. Benning and Green have to live this 24/7 while we as fans pass uniformed judgements. All I have to do is make sure I have a beer ready in case Jake scores.
