Investing in the stock market - Discussion

I think you really hit on something there. The psychology involved in investing probably impacts results more than anything else. Confirmation bias. I am a fundamental investor but the reality is that numbers are usually to old and as a retail investor I have no real knowledge of what is happening in a particular company. I have read a number of Bogle's books and found them very relevant. I use index funds for part of my portfolio. I am long on a number of stocks to the point that taxes would kill me if I sold them. A good excuse to do nothing. Graham was a value guy. Always liked the idea that you bought a stock to hold it forever. Most investors who bought and held did just fine. -

Youthful exuberance hopefully morphs into more reserved retrospection. Might not have made much money but those were great days. -

Bogle and Graham are great. Technical Analysis is the equivalent of some guy in skins shaking a bunch of bones out a skull. That's my read and I'm sticking to it. -
Baer is a great guy by all indications. Bottom line is he is 28 years old. His ppg over 291 NHL games is 0.47. His best season was 4 years ago at 18 g + 17 assists = 35 points. He has never played a full season. IMHO he has to play top 6 in the NHL and I don't think he will ever get there. The Canuck depth has past him bye and the fact that no other NHL club picked him up should surprise anyone.

Why is the KoS opinions spam when there are any number of posters on here that seem to post 24 hours a day?

The market is playing a bubble game. It works until it doesn't and then goes over a cliff. Market makers certainly do not want people to bailout. The growing dominance of ETF's simply amps up the leverage. So many people are simply gambling and fooling themselves by saying they are investing. P/E: the S&P long term average is 17.3, it is currently 30.8 S&P: 2036 is fair value (Determined by actual earnings) 2669 is the level it is anticipated that the Fed would step in to support a decline 3709 is the current S&P level. 82% above fair value FANGs: FB, AMZN, Netflex, GOOGL: they represent 12% of the entire S&P; add 1.5% for TESLA; this doesn't include MSFT or AAPL Cognitive Bias: Bubble markets like this provide an illusionary superiority as returns grow. FW P/E: I use this stat regularly but it is a key cognitive bias factor as anticipated growth can be a guess at best. Seeing 15% EPS growth is a almost standard expectation and yet is very difficult to achieve at the best of times. Many pundits are extrapolating growth numbers similar to the FANGs. That isn't going to happen in the vast majority of cases. Consider what happens to markets every time a stimulus package is delayed or the size is questioned. Markets dive. Many people now think that governments can keep buying their own bonds and can keep handing out money without serious ramifications. There is no time in the history of the world that this has happened. It will not now. Stop Loss: For those new to the markets having a exit strategy is more important than what you are buying. Set Stop Loss points and review regularly. -
Who determines whether he is healthy enough to play? NHL doctors? NHLPA doctors?

[Signing] Canucks re-sign Justin Bailey
Boudrias replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Totally agree. At a point in his career where he has to impress every time he gets ice. I liked his look last year. Ideal depth player with potential. -
I’m hoping Pods stays in Canada when his team returns to Russia. Straight to the Canucks.

If they open the border I will drive to Spokane and get the shot. Probably by May.

The CCP is controlling the flow of info back into China so well now they can say anything about whatever deal brings Meng back. I don't think they care that much about what we say or think. When their ambassador gets on CTV News and spouts off it is to influence Canadians and maybe some expatriate Chinese in Canada.

I looked at it. I have ABBV, CVS and JNJ in that space. To buy BSX I would have to sell JNJ so that was my comparison. JNJ is cheaper and pays a nice dividend. BSX has a real healthy EPS growth rate. You could see +$30 on BSX. I supposed there has been delayed surgery due to Covid. I will stick with JNJ because of the breadth of their offer. Coward. -
I looked at the crypto ETF last month and decided to stick with gold. Interesting that Visa is now allowing payment from Bitcoin accounts using their card. I likely relook at V as a indirect exposure.

I remember cold calls from brokers on the VSE. I admit that I bit on a few. I was in my early 20's and running my own business. Bottom line was I knew my business didn't have the potential to grow much more than it had. Diversifying became my internal mantra. -
I think his skating compliments the Canuck game moving forward. Excited to see him play more.

I continue with my gold play which is 21% of my port. Debt is the issue as people seem to ignore what is inevitable. USA debt $24 T and Canada likely close to $3 T. Bond market has been destroyed as both the USA and Canada governments both buy their own bonds. 2020 inflow of $51 B to gold. There are $100 T of institutional assets. If $1 T is moved to gold it would consume 6 years of global gold production. That would drive gold value to $5 to $10,000. Disrupters to this play is how much money goes to Bitcoin instead and how long will the Biden honeymoon last? -
[Speculation] Canucks clearing Cap for Hamonic
Boudrias replied to CRAZY_4_NAZZY's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Some posters have made the valid point of Hamonic being better than Benn and I would not argue that. Losing Benn and signing Hamonic makes some sense if Tryamkin doesn't come back in time for playoffs. Getting the young d-core prospects TOI is more important than anything else as the group develops towards serious contention in 2-3 years out. -
[Report] Maxim Lapierre announces retirement

Thanks for that! Loved Max! -
The chattering class have to have something to dither about. So the Haida who have been front and center during on ice ceremonies were appropriated as well? More like another rather crass attempt at extorting money by a select few. Perhaps NHL teams should be made up on the basis of racial proportion.

[Speculation] Canucks clearing Cap for Hamonic
Boudrias replied to CRAZY_4_NAZZY's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I question the idea of whether they will run because the AHL is a gate driven league. Many teams won't have the resources unless their NHL affiliates give them money. When they talked about running a Canadian AHL division the $ numbers simply didn't work. Canucks have to have ice time for their prospects somewhere. They can carry an enlarged taxi squad but I question how effective that will be. This was the main reason for not wanting to sign Hamonic. At least the prospects would get some NHL games while they sit around on a taxi squad. I am hoping for Utica to run but I suspect a real reluctance by fans to attend. -

I read where 18% of the S&P listings were shell companies. Probably not phrasing that right.
