Investing in the stock market - Discussion
Boudrias replied to AV's Coin's topic in Off-Topic General
Nervous about the oil stocks. The Pipes have some sensitivity to oil pricing so I will stay there. I am maintaining my tech exposure which is GOOGL, MSFT and AMZN. They all have strong balance sheets and I anticipate their growth profiles will draw investors back. I am running numbers on real estate today. I am underweight and there should be value there as the cost of money will likely drop more and their revenue has not drop as much as anticipated over Covid. -

Finally CVS is breaking out. RTX is moving as well. Market moving to the value side. Last week I added to RTX, AQN, PPL, and TRP. I still like the Pipes for the yield as much as anything else. My gold stocks are causing grief. I am heavy on this play and still think the debt issue comes home to roost. -
Who taught Canadians more about the game than Howie? A great person. I met Howie in the lobby of the Hotel Russia, Moscow in 1974. Each morning Howie would walk in with his plaid sports jacket and in runners. He would give us the latest run down of what the Russians were doing off the ice to beat us. Bugs in Gordie Howe’s room to ease drop on Canadian strategy. Doped water. Strange guys walking the halls. All these revelations while chewing on a stoggie. The more Howie talked the more excited he got. You had to love the guy. RIP and make sure you go to the net. To hell with Peter Puck!

I am not defending the PO % just discussing the external influences on the managements of these companies. Yes the dividends have to reflect profitability. I see Buffet has bought $18 billion of BRK stock in the past year. -

Both BP and Shell lowered their dividends but there was political pressure not too. Their dividends are core revenue for many retirees. Their stock is held by government pension plans. I held Shell until they cut their dividend and sold afterwards. -

I was with Shell from 1970 - 96 and always found them very progressive. They funded the development of wood pellets as a alternative fuel. They actually had a agri division that developed chemical apps that reduced tillage and improved yields. Corporately I don't know that much about their R&D. What we saw in the field was their actual activity. The joke in Shell was that they could set a drill rig up on a pool of oil and still hit gas. The issue with all this stuff is generating enough revenue to warrant the effort. I was surprised when SHell moved forward with LNG in Rupert. When you read studies that suggest electric power can be generated at .03 c3nts/kwh by SWB systems you have to pay attention. Firing the entire USA grid with SWB at a capital cost of > $2 trillion is hugely disruptive. Cheap power electrifies the highways and brings high consumption industry back to the USA. It likely drives agriculture upwards inside buildings for selected crops. Reduces crude oil demand by 60%. I honestly did not believe battery technology was that far along. -

I like infrastructure stocks. Just reading a study on SWB transition of the grid. The study says new solar projects are cheapest option. By 2030 SWB will be well established and producing power at .03 cents /kWh. Huge disruption. I moved away from oil but now my natural gas ENB, TRP aand PPL are suspect. Just imagine the business opportunities at 3 cent power. -

I was reading some good stuff about their B to B application of cloud tech. I was tempted but did not buy IBM. I don't think all the synergies are done by the CVS buyout of Aetna. -

Finally went green on CVS after 9 months. They are still paying down debt on the Aetna purchase but 2021 should be a banner year. ABBV took off. Telus had a great Q3 and then announces a buyout of a AI company by Telus International. They confirmed their IPO of Telus International in Q1 of 2021. I sold all BCE and lifted T to a 5% about 2 months ago. -

Adding to AQN, PPL, and TRP this morning. Sold a little BIPC on valuation. Natural gas and power grids should be winners. Bought some HHL two weeks ago. Health exposure with covered calls. Still holding my gold play. -

Drops below $3000 and I buy more. -
Thanks I needed that. I remember that game. IMO Tryamkin didn't get much team support when he was frequently swarmed in the early games of that season. Not that he appeared to need it. If/when he comes back it will be a much different team and better suited for his game. He has the ability to be a 2nd pairing d-man.

"The Longest Day" and "A Bridge to Far" were great movies. Either made by people who served during the war or were of an age that they lived during the war like Connery. I see where Connery joined the RN in '46 at age 16 and served for 3 years. I gladly consider him one of the "Great Generation". I truly did not have as great a understanding or admiration for what this generation did until I went to Normandy. I cannot believe any Canadian could go to Beny-sur-Mer and look at all those graves without tearing up.

I will always remember Sean C in ‘The Longest Day’.

Look at AQN. I was hoping to add during this pullback but it isn’t dropping. Bought anyway. Also own BEPC but not adding as it is fully valued. Also like the Pipes as natural gas is surging. -
League Cap Solution (Discussion/Proposal)
Boudrias replied to J.I.A.H.N's topic in General Hockey Discussion
Comparing the value of a franchise in 1970 at $6 mil versus a franchise in 2019 at $500 mil has many variants. Using a 2% inflation factor is one but also consider the revenue growth which is far higher than 2%. Not only are teams generating far more income but there is a CAP with escrow provisions. IMHO there is far more downside protection than in 1970. In 2018/19 the NHL had sales of $5.09 billion of which the players share +/- 50%. If you amortized a franchise fee of $500 mil over 20 years and added interest charges my ballpark tells me a cost of $37 mil for a fully financed expansion franchise. I would expect the financing could be spread even longer. One can play with these numbers in many ways. Going back to 1970 there wasn't even revenue sharing. Most fans don't like Bettmen but I give him a lot of credit for saving Canadian NHL franchises as most were ready to fold back in the late '70's and early '80's. One cannot really argue that he has not stabilized the NHL Another consideration which has fallen aside during Covid was the renewed broadcast contract that Bettman was negotiating with American networks last fall. The final numbers were never public but speculation was +$200 mil per year. Even higher if the broadcast rights were segmented by regions. At $200 mil that was + $6 mil per team. You can understand to some extent why so many teams were pushing their CAP's up as they anticipated a significant increase. -
League Cap Solution (Discussion/Proposal)
Boudrias replied to J.I.A.H.N's topic in General Hockey Discussion
Interesting discussion. I would throw another idea out. Since some teams are more affluent than others how about a CAP overdraft being measured in draft picks. Over by $500,000 it cost a 4th Round pick, $1 mill = 3rd rdr; $2 mil = 2nd rdr; $3 mil = 1st rdr. Or some version of that. Talent is the currency of the NHL and the threat of losing it counts. Is Covid the special circumstances or the excuse? Teams that don't manage their CAP are penalized by losing players to make their payroll fit. Theoretically the teams picking up those players are in need based on their lower CAP. Maybe the system is just fine. I get more upset with the expansion franchise deals that set up new entrants very nicely. Canucks never got that kind of break. -

Look a year out. I noticed the volumes were mostly light in my portfolio. Come Nov.4th markets recover. -

I originally thought to increase cash prior to the USA election as I anticipated negative sentiment no matter who wins. Cash + equivalents + gold now sits at roughly 30%. Are valuations high? In tech for sure but they have growth and that is a valuable asset. My value stocks are barely recovered from pre Covid levels. It all seems to come down to a vaccine. Vaccines likely start rolling out in December/January. Combine that with massive USA government spending (no matter who wins) and markets should go up. I stay in my gold play no matter what as America/Canada and the world start to realize the financial fallout of all the spending. I can easily see 2021 as a seriously down year and likely a precursor of years to come. -
I am happy with the d-core as constituted. I would like to see 2 Utica d-men with the Canucks on a ongoing basis until one of them asserts his top 6 claim. Likely will be Joulevi but there is enough talent to surprise us. Somewhat the same up front. Ferland is the big question but I doubt he overcomes the concussion problem. Is Bailey under contract? After a strong playoff I have to think Mott has a crack at the 3rd line with some scoring upside. Big Mac sticks. Hawryluk is unknown to me. With a little more muscle I can even see Sven getting back in. Interesting times.

[Signing] Flames Sign Josh Leivo
Boudrias replied to Millerdraft's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Leivo will be 28 in May. With the existing contracts and his injury I can see why JB took a pass. I rather the younger prospects get the TOI. -
I meant to say he spent a year at Selkirk not I.
