  1. You got me remembering now. I remember a kid named Robbie Robertson. I spent a year at Selkirk College and then signed with Notre Dame University in Indiana. He used to come home on breaks and talk about the race riots down there. Never saw his name in the pros.
  2. I was there in 69-71. Doesn't ring a bell. A name that never left me was a young guy who played for the Castlegar Rebels. Shukin I think. One of the most talented players I ever saw. He dominated a game one night against the Junior Smokeaters. Never forget. Stick handle and skate like the wind. That was the year the Jr. Smokeaters won provincials. It was a real treat to watch those guys. The vets from the World Champ '61 team were helping with that team all the time. Travis Green came thru a good 10 years later and they were still coaching the young kids.
  3. Played in a Rec league at Selkirk College. A lot of good hockey players in the Castlegar-Rossland-Trail-Fruitvale circuit. No beer in the dressing rooms but we went into the Tera Nova after games as underagers and had a few frosties. My classic story about those days was lifting a BMW off the CPR tracks on the way to a game at Cominco Arena. Yes you could actually hear the train whistle as we lifted the car. The guy gave us a $20 for our troubles. That was back in the day when a glass of beer was 20 cents. The boys had a great night that night. Went on to a career in a commercial league and then into coaching my son thru his hockey.
  4. A 1000 drones with cans of Raid strapped to their wings might be cost effective.
  5. Actually having a half dozen "bombs" might be the cheapest option for self defense. I am sure we can buy them under the counter from Israel, Taiwan or the Norks. In the case of the Norks we ship them some wheat as most of them are starving. Canada is a patsy in the view of most other countries. The Americans, Chinese and Russians think they can push us around and do so regularly. Having bombs doesn't really stop this but does cause some reflection.
  6. Hutton broke in with the Canucks and put up the most points in his NHL career and caps it off with a World Championship Gold. His offence kept him in a offensively challenged Canuck roster. IMHO a year in Utica would have given him a better game in the d-zone. Experience gained in the AHL is valuable in transition to the NHL. Hutton got a bit of a pass on his d-zone play early in his career and then could not be sent to Utica without clearing waivers.
  7. I always considered Ben Hutton as the poster boy for lousy development. 4 games in the AHL before being thrown to the wolves. Vancouver's poor prospect depth consistently brought players to the NHL before they were ready. Brisbois, Chatfield, Sautner and of course Joulevi have all paid their dues in Utica. Rafferty, even tho older, spends a year in Utica with a pretty solid d-core to gain pro experience. More depth = better outcomes.
  8. When you devote your life to making the NHL then trying to overcome the concussion problem to play again is understandable. That said I would not risk my health to do this when I have a young family at home and enough money to retire on. Yes, I am making a lot of assumptions and I hope Michael has sound advice.
  9. Reading reports that the Buffalo Party is running in 2nd place in the Saskatchewan provincial election. If true Kenney will look more perplexed than usual.
  10. Also consider his income tax treatment back in Euroland compared to here as well. Bottom line is his kids were all born over here as well. Would his family want to live in Europe? If I had a choice I would not. I cannot see any hope that another team would take LE unless there was serious CAP retention with a bonus player. It suggests a buy-out.
  11. Louie came to our town to visit our local chief who was looking to emulate his success. Got a chance to meet him and was very impressed. Since then our local chief has proceeded with a number of private enterprise investments on the reserve and in the larger community. Successful role models in the community are great. IMHO this is the direction that the First Nations has to undertake. Financial independence is critical to long term success. Long term dependence does more to subjugate a people than anything else. Subjugation is not restricted only to 'white society'. What Louie has shown me is the necessity of building leadership capacity. He is and has done that. My view on indigenous rights is that the Courts have to make decisions and then society has to live with them. Ultimately citizens have to be equal before the law. Tiered citizenship breeds resentments and leads to ongoing dispute. What I see in my town is businesses owned by the local native band who employ all residents. Working and living together creates respect and unity. Eventually I hope individual natives will own and run their own businesses. Reserves will be a thing of the past.
  12. Joe won't be able to go to the rink in flip flops come January like he was in SJ. That alone will throw him into a funk.
  13. It looked to me like Joe was going thru the motions in some of the games I watched last year. Thorton and Spezza? Spezza looked like he was outplaying some of the younger guys last year. Maybe this works in a short season.
  14. Hoping for a 3 year bridge deal with the reward in the 3rd year. He cannot get any movement restrictions so the trade option will always be there. I am still high on Jake and think his potential is still upwards.
  15. Edler is still playing a strong game at 34. Hughes becoming the top TOI player at LD took pressure off Edler IMHO. His game benefited. I can easily see him being resigned on 1 year deals, CAP friendly, if the depth doesn't bump him off. Even tho they play opposite sides I think that JB had to choose between Edler and Tanev. Edler is a very experienced d-man and still plays a very physical game with a touch of meanness that is in short supply in Vancouver.
  16. I remember when that happened to Guy Lapointe. Top notch point man. He came back to the game but was never the same. Fungal in nature I believe.
  17. Does that mean Johnathan, Patty, Duncan and especially Brent will forego some of their pay to help Bowman out? Didn't think so.
  18. I doubt JB thinks he will get value by trading Virtanen. More likely he hangs onto him to see how he plays particularly if he gets serious time on the 2nd line. For Jake it is all about consistency and all that is required to achieve that. Vancouver has to have size and more physicality and Jake has that potential.
  19. Good to hear from you Smokes. Hope all is well in China. Glad and he didn’t go after Petro. I think the team is still 2 years away. Schmidt is cheaper and younger. Excited for the trade.
  20. I agree with you. I thought the possible problem with TT would be term. JB has some CAP space i might spend some of that on his d-core which is more important than forwards. That said he has to find TOI for his young d-men. If the goal is CUP contention 23-24 he he has to know what they can bring in time to make changes if that is needed. Brisbois, OJ, Chatfield, and Rafferty. Rathbone has also moved quickly although a year of AHL is likely if the AHL runs. IMHO the playoff success this year has left fans a tad to overoptimistic. Marky was the MVP for a reason. The young core has to get morre experience and lots of TOI.
  21. Love that Try is playing under a NHL coach. If he comes back to the NHL I am sure it will be with the Canucks. Much more experienced player. He will shine in Vancouver.
  22. Why would it be tampering? The NHL doesn't have any agreements with the KHL.
