  1. I think you are reacting to the contracts you don't like out of context from the time they were made. The CAP was growing by $3-4 million a year when Erickson was signed. JB has a challenge to deal with no doubt about that.
  2. In retrospect Canuck fans can regret some of the contracts you mention. To a degree we have to review them in the context they were signed. What was the market demanding which gave these players multiple options to go elsewhere. What was the immediate need for the team that encouraged their signing? What benefit did these players provide for the younger players who will form the core for a CUP challenge? What other players development have made the role of those we now want to discard possible? So many variables come into play. The development of a team is kinda like a living organism. Changes whether expected or not happen and management has to react with the long term goal of a CUP in the crosshairs.
  3. Not a time for a desperation move IMO. Sign another vet d-man at a reasonable price and duration and play the youth to see what is there. If Tryamkin wants to come back he can in the spring when the KHL is done. With Covid who knows when the NHL gets going. Van has 4 young d-men they can play.
  4. IMHO the NHL season is broken into 2 different games, regular season and playoffs. There was no way JB could stand pat with a defense that was physically challenged as it was during the playoffs. 2 minutes in the d-zone with your tender playing lights out is not CUP winning play. I appreciate that d-zone play is not solely 2 defensemen but the work had to start somewhere. Tanev got a lot of credit for bailing Hughes out during the season but I would suggest the reverse was also true. Hughe's ability to move the puck up ice took a lot of pressure off Tanev and Marky for that matter. That was regular season. Come playoffs opposing teams targeted Tanev and Stecher and Hughes physically. Bottom line was Hughes was able to counter this with his offense.
  5. If it is Barry don't you think that JB could get a shorter, show me, deal from Barrie. The Laffers talked him up big time but his performance has not matched that from his early years in AV country. Barrie has something to prove to the NHL IMHO.
  6. JB seems to have his timeline clearly placed. It is not about building a team for next year it is about 2022-23. It is about maturing the players within the org that have potential of being on that team. Develop the current roster and supplement when advantageous. I wanted to move Tanev 3 years ago assets but understand why he was not. Weighing the risk and cost of re-upping Marky is another decision balanced against the potential of Demko. Canucks are no longer a team trying to rebuld their prospect pool in the desperate sense they were 4 years ago. JB now has legit assets. I am very disappointed that vets moving out did not bring assets back but that is not unique to Vancouver. Fixed CAP combined with a Seattle ED is tough. Still convinced JB has some irons still in the fire. Will watch today with great interest.
  7. Without Markstrom the Canucks wouldn't have got past Minnie. Opps, forgot about Demko. Calgary hasn't had goal tending for a few years so I can see why they gave Marky such a deal. Now all we have to do is put up with Hrudy's crowing.
  8. I expect teams to step back and reassess after this movement today. They come back tomorrow with their alternative deals. Not over yet.
  9. Marky got his deal for money and term and deservedly so. He played a lot of great games for Vancouver and never resorted to drama. Calgary got our season and playoff MVP. Bottom line the Canucks could not afford to keep him and that's the way it goes. If not for Marky fans would be no where near as optimistic as they are right now. JB still has work to do on the d-core so let's hope he has irons in the fire. Salute to Jacob Markstrom a great Canuck and a great person!!!
  10. Good luck to Marky! He paid his dues and deserves what he can get. 4 years versus 2 for Holtby. I bet he got a NMC from Calgary. Holtby being backloaded suggests another deal is coming. A 2 year deal fits well with Demko and he can be extended if he is a good fit. I thought Holtby was so/so in playoffs but Marky gets hurt.
  11. He was kinda on the ropes when Ottawa took him. Had a good season in response. IMHO anyone in the Canuck bottom 6 has to be willing to engage physically and I am not sure Duclair is that type.
  12. Any relation to the Stephan Persson who played way back in the '80's with the NYI? He was a big man as well. 9 year NHL vet.
  13. If nothing else the playoffs showed us that the Canuck d-core was not big enough. I thought Stech played well. Bottom line is that the Canucks had more to gain by giving his ice to a younger/bigger prospect. Few players with a bigger heart so I hope he finds a place.
  14. My problem with ETF's is trying to value them. Data is scarce. If younger I can see investing by sector as the longer the term the better. All that said I put my wife in VBAL and it is doing quite well. It is positive for the year contrary to many of my fundamental value stocks. It has a 60/40 equity/income split.
  15. No problem with your Tanev valuation but add no trade restrictions. That makes it tougher.
  16. Not all players view the bottom line as the amount of cash offered. Both Markstrom and Tanev have spent many years in Van. Van is a beautiful place to live. The USA is in turmoil these days. I can easily see each of them taking a discount to stay. Whether they do or not JB has hard realities he has to deal with.
  17. My daughter was 3 days waiting for results in Calgary 2 weeks ago.
  18. That makes total sense. Signing aging vets like Grabs and Ryan makes no sense. 2 rounds of playoffs and fans are thinking this roster is a contender next year. IMHO they are still 2 years away at the earliest. Give the TOI to younger players who might be part of a contending group. I would be shedding vets like Erickson, Sutter and Roussel. I would hang onto Beagle for another year because of his physical conditioning and FO%. Steady influence.
  19. Canada needs a fast and accurate Covid testing regime and after 9 months we still don't have one. Kids are going to school and bringing what back into the home. How many families were relying on grandparents to provide daycare for their kids? Society has to have a way of functioning with Covid. Shutting down the economy cannot happen. It is one thing to rely on other countries to supply PPE and hopefully a vaccine but maintaining a functioning economy another.
  20. Maybe faster testing is coming???
  21. Were the Americans ever going to buy a military airplane from a foreign country?
  22. Trump is a very poor speaker. At times he appears incoherent. He was an outlier with he took on Clinton and much of his bombast did not stick. The question will be whether Biden can counterpunch well enough. The longer either of these guys talk the more trouble they get themselves into. The questions asked will also make a dif. Should be a gong show.
  23. You play Baer and you take TOI away from another player who might be part of a CUP contender in 2 years. Baer might do OK during the regular season but you just have to watch TBay and Dallas to measure where the Canucks have to be a couple of years. Baer won't be part of that. Canucks have to get bigger and meaner to be a contender. TBay is down right intimidating.
  24. Can't you just see Tryamkin leading a rush up the ice with Hughes drafting in behind him. They cross the blue line and Try drops the puck between his legs to Hughes. Hughes fakes left, then right as Try skates to the net setting the screen. Try is so tall that Hughes can still roof the puck shooting between Try's legs! Perfect screen! There will be NO way to defend against these two!
