Investing in the stock market - Discussion

As a buy and hold investor I will be standing pat until fall. If the market hits new lows I have the cash to take advantage. At some point the feds will increase their take on the dividend tax credit and the capital gains exemption. How much will likely change investment strategies. Just as investors left much of the bond market I can see increased taxes encouraging some people to gamble harder on the higher risk/reward stocks. -
I am watching the ‘94 series between the Canucks and Laffers. It is startling to see how much the game has changed. The physicality has really been downgraded. ‘94 almost anything went. My my goodness but was Mike Gardner a beautiful player to watch. The series also reminds me why I still consider Trevor Linden the greatest Canuck. He did everything a player could do in that CUP run.

I see Kenney is refusing to release the report studying Alberta's place in/out of Canada. I do think he is on a short leash and Wexit will challenge him next election. I see the LPC and the NDP combined to keep Parliament shutdown. This country hits new lows everyday that JT is in power. While these politicians sit in their basements the working people of this country go to work.

I have never heard anything so farcical as CRA penalizing people who make to much money. What am I saying? Of course they do all the time. You got the money and we want our cut. TFSA's were to be a tax free tool to supplement RRSP's in retirement planning. It should absolutely make no difference in how much money you make. What the government is saying we want to be your investment advisor. Yes, buy a bank stock and a buy a tele stock, throw in some ENB and sit on it. Hit a home run on a mining stock and we get a cut. What BS this country is turning into. -
Very interesting. Guns,Germs & Steel by Diamond is a worthwhile read.

From January 31st to May 25th, almost 4 months since Covid was truly recognized as the threat it is. Some might argue it was known earlier. Ignore the idea that SARs was to give us a heads up on the issues we would face. What we are faced with today is that Canada and the USA are ramping up their economies. Ramping up because they were never shut down. The challenge with ramping up and thusly increasing the number of people interacting with one another is protection from C-19. What is the status in Canada. Testing and PPE supply is still no where close to adequate. How are we to know what the real situation is without the basics?

The American system has far more power within their Senate and Congress. One could argue that system has led to more influence peddling as they control budgets. What many Canadians seem to ignore is that corruption with Parliament is alive and well. Anywhere where hundreds of Billions of $ are allocated leave room for corruption. Another trick used down to the municipal and regional level is the regular padding of expenses. -
The support political parties get from the tax payer doesn't stop with this wage subsidy. They get election expenses written off. Net benefit to parties is about $2.63 per vote. IMHO the Covid crisis is another attempt by politicians to get taxpayer support. So the taxpayer will be subsidizing the wages of people who are phoning me for a contribution. I quit donating money to politicians as there accountability to their membership is practically non-existent. These people already have their hands in my pocket through existing programs. The creeping institutionalizing of party finance simply distances the grassroots further away from party philosophy and direction. Town hall meetings are pretty much a thing of the past but had real value in MP interaction with citizens. This is right up there with Parliament not sitting for fear of Covid. Again another excuse to isolate the process. It is OK for grocery workers to work but our politicians hole up where ever they hole up. Real leadership?

IMO Benning has to think 2-3 years out. The interim years are about developing the d-core to be serious CUP contenders. 3 years out and the only players I still see with the club is Hughes, Myers and Tryamkin if he is signed. Maybe Edler for his vet presence as a 6D or 7D. That will be a major transition and suggest that Benning will try and deal for another top 4 or sign a UFA.

Wow. Thanks for that. Never forget the old VSE days. I had forgotten that was where Robert Freidland spent time. I made money off his IVN effort. -
The story was unclear as to whether they lost all the $3 billion or a portion. My impression was it was all. The March meltdown was about 25% on the TSX, not 100%. These type of investment funds are not invested in high risk flyers. This story just doesn't sound right?
-
That story stinks so bad how could we believe it. Work Safe BC lost $3 billion in the stock market? Who was managing the money and who authorized the investment policy? This is not believable. If the money is actually lost the auditor general had better be at their offices with the RCMP.

People are people where ever you go. I have been to China a couple of times and had interesting conversations with people there. One particular young fellow was asking us for foreign currency as that gave him access to foreign goods that he could not buy with Chinese currency. His parents were professionals who had suffered during Mao's Red Guard, back to the earth movement. This young guy was a real go getter and had no political illusions from what I could see. I also went to Moscow for the WHA hockey series in 1974. I ended up in a bar with 3 Mongols who were in Moscow taking a meat cutting course. Only one spoke broken English but they were very interested in the West and what we saw as important. As Don would say we had a few to many wobbly pops as we closed the bar down. They were great guys. My take from these two experiences was that media control by politicians is a very dangerous thing but most people recognize BS when the hear it enough times. They measure their experiences with what they hear and decide what is believable or not. I actually find many Canadians very naive as they accept what they hear as truth.
-
I would be all for that. Each side of an issue presents there case and each gets time for a rebuttal. No talking over the other person in the process. Would the audience get the chance to vote on who was the winner? Love the idea.

I wasn't suggesting the Swiss franc could replace the USD as the scale isn't there. I just find it interesting that they manipulate their currency by buying foreign assets. Being #8 in the world for a country that size is impressive to me. I often wonder how a resource based country like Canada can build a sovereign wealth fund that invests in support of a national industrial strategy. It would be almost impossible to prevent political interference but the national security need is there. Like Norway I view the energy industry as the cash cow that would fund such an effort. Bring some of the crew from the CPP to frame it out. -
Politicians use the people's distrust in the truthfulness of media to their advantage. Trump is a master at it but the Dems are no different. The reality for most media is that their business plans are threatened and many are facing bankruptcy. It is no different in Canada as the Globe & Mail recently asked for more government money. When the revenue for these orgs becomes more based on government handouts the people should be very worried about the objectivity of their news coverage.

My bet is that the LPC will make principal residences subject to the capital gains tax within 2 years. -

The Swiss franc serves the purpose. The franc's value is regularly boosted by people wanting to hold a currency that counters the USD. The franc climbs in value and makes Swiss export goods expensive. The Swiss government actually buys foreign assets to lower the franc's value. They buy currency and shares in foreign companies. They are actually the 8th largest public investor in the world. -
And now they admit that home made face masks are better than nothing.

I like Berman and own his ZZZD. Global with active management. 4% yield. I think the debt issue cannot be ignored or glossed over. I guess is you are a trader the risk can be mitigated somewhat by liquidating. As a value guy I tend to hold my core and add at a discount. Canada has a lot of financial problems on the horizon. Government, corporate and personal debt are the manifestation. Now add C-19. Prior to this flu the GDP was >1% and capital was leaving the country steadily. Investment in plant, machinery & equipment and intellectual property were in decline. Growing the country out of the debt problem by increasing business activity will be a struggle in a deflationary environment The only saving grace on the debt front is decades low interest rates. I am staying cautious as I agree with many here who do expect new lows. This is especially true if there is another flu spike. While countries simply cannot afford to shut their economies down the impact on people's confidence could be shaken again. I will wait until new lows are hit or until September. Knowing my luck a vaccine will come out and the markets take off upwards. -
My take was you were discussing the relative merits of some players. My only point being was that playoffs would have helped that assessment.
-
The C-19 shutdown of the NHL season has many negatives. The biggest one for the Canucks is no opportunity to see the young talent play in a playoff setting. Getting the experience would be valuable for their development but also would give Benning a opportunity to evaluate their play in a non regular season setting. Harder game and more stress.

I am about the same as you but don't own TMX and sold my BNS 2 months back. My banks are RY & TD. I am heavy into Brookfield except for their Business LP. Kinda like getting a Alternative Investment manager at no MER. Ya, I now they charge management fees so I also bought BAM. I'm close to full weight on Telus and have lightened up on BCE as a result. Telus Health and Telus International are units to keep your eye on. My keeper stocks mostly spit out steady CF via divs so I use that to buy on weakness. I was forced out of BYP.U about a month ago. It is the only stock I will consider buying back into before fall. I do expect a revisit to the March lows but this time the recovery will be longer. It will take a vaccine to really get things going. -

Owned it for years. Grows the div steadily. Has about $6 billion of projects on the books. Generates about half their revenue in the USA. Markets are in turmoil right now but when C-19 is resolved I think there will be another run on utility stocks that yield over 3%. Also own BIPC which is supposed to be equivalent to BIP.U yet the price differential is almost $8. I guess companies who held BIP.U are buying along with Americans.
