  1. Since when did provinces have the authority to close national borders? A Canadian citizen presenting at a crossing cannot be refused.
  2. The oil your Grandpa drank was probably a non detergent, almost mineral oil, product. I am just guessing but it was so early in the era that more toxic detergents hadn't been developed yet. You mentioned not knowing which side he might have fought with. I built my house in 1980 and my neighbors were a old Polish couple of German heritage. He was a fine gentleman with an inquisitive mind who loved to visit during construction. Spoke 6 languages and read German and Polish newspapers sent from the old country. He was gassed in WW I and his to be wife(German) nursed him back to health. A curiosity in the neighborhood was this couple lived next to another German family. They did not associate with one another as his wife was not considered acceptable as she came from a lower cast part of German society.
  3. Totally agree. Not only that but how do teams deal with C19 and the drop in revenue? The CAP will be down on a wage structure that already exists. I see another wave of buyouts and reduced salaries for those resigned. Maybe more bridge deals?
  4. More likely an indication of how far their share values have dropped. Many examples of the same thing on the TSX.
  5. To be fair I don't know how old this info is. In a normal season picking would start by mid April but it has been wet. They did check out the Mexican community in Kelowna that works at a nursery but that was the one that was hit by C19.
  6. What value does that number have? It is practically meaningless. With much certainty we know that China and Russia have understated their infection rate. Many countries don't have any ability to collect data. Most countries don't do anything close to universal testing. We have no real idea of how many people in Canada or the USA have C19. Michael Campbell's show had interesting points. 7 million people left Wuhan province during January of this year. WHO stood by two critical assumptions; a) Border barriers would not work b) masks would not work. As it turns out this has blown up in their faces. Experience in S. Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and HongKong have proved otherwise. There is now a global petition to remove the head of the WHO. Canada has followed the WHO thru this entire emergency. Our neighbor grows asparagus and depends on Mexican labor to pick it. He contacted the Canadian government who said he could bring in Mexican pickers again this year. The Mexican government said no. People continue to arrive in Canada with no mandatory isolation and no testing. Fake News: CBS broadcast scenes from what was presented as a NYC hospital but was in fact an Italian hospital. Graphic scenes for shock value.
  7. If memory serves the annual death rate in the USA is about 1.5%. To date the death rate has not exceeded the normal death rate during a regular flu season. The question might be whether it would be worse if these extraordinary precautions hadn't been taken? You would have to think so.
  8. It is down like everything else. It is a long term holding so even now I am up over 104%. There was talk of Telus spinning off their Telus International but no new news lately.
  9. One might ask what is a national security priority in Canada? Not like SARs wasn't a wake up call. I see the 10 year bond yield in the USA dropped below Canada's. I don't think I have ever seen that before. At some point Canada will not be able to finance the debt. I suspect rating agencies will be re-evaluating both government and corporate debt in Canada. How much of Canadian GDP will be in the hands of government by the time this virus passes? If Canada had any illusions about what the Americans were capable of then NAFTA 2.0 should have woke them up. If it wasn't Trump playing hardball it would be another POTUS. Nixon and LBJ come to mind. They needed us a lot more back then, not so much now. Truly I think there is a significant geopolitical realignment going on here. I think the Americans are aware of the world debt problem and are positioning themselves to come out the other end. To them this is just as much a national security issue as any threat the Russians or Chinese present. I have said many times I do not expect Canada to survive as constituted.
  10. Apparently neither did the Germans or French in the case of Italy. The apex of this thing hasn't even hit yet. As I said people will take care of their own first.
  11. Not only that but they issued a bunch of stock before the market crapped out. I had a Telus crew here about a year ago and the repair guy tried really hard to sell me a suite of their services. Security included with cameras. Another really interesting aspect of Telus is their health division and Telus International. I cut back my BCE and went full allocation of 5% on Telus a while ago.
  12. A market analyst I like wrote to expect another 15 to 20% drop in the major indices. AC isn't my cup of tea anyway so would never buy anyhow. Telus is getting good reviews right now.
  13. Strategic reserves were supposed to be established after SARs. The Germans and French cut off ventilator shipments to Italy weeks ago. You can imagine the rage if JT shipped a bunch of ventilators to China. Just demonstrates that countries will take care of their own when required.
  14. Same thing is happening in Europe. Some suggestion it could be the end of the European Union.
  15. I am sure the Chinese will have some spare defective ones they can sell us.
  16. Had an email from a Rotarian in Kenya. She said it is simply impossible for the majority of Kenyans to self isolate or not work. They do not have the means of survival otherwise.
  17. I thought Trump had put economic sanctions on most of the countries you mentioned?
  18. The number infected will never be known with any accuracy. Hugh numbers will have mild C-19 and never be tested or notify health authorities. My nephew is in self isolation and had a bout of flu mid last week. It has all cleared up and he has extended his isolation for another 5 days to make sure.
  19. We take a lot for granted here in N. AMerica. Korea and Taiwan cannot. Also easier for provinces, states and federal governments to look the other way as the cost of building reserves is not cheap.
  20. We will likely never hear a lot of detail but I will throw out my assumption why the S.Koreans have done so well. They probably had military supplies to deal with chemical warfare. More importantly they probably had a active plan on how to deal with large numbers of people infected by chemical or biological agents. This likely goes for Taiwan as well.
  21. The 2 doctors Trump has to his press conferences sound pretty smart.
  22. This is who the Democratic nominee should be. Someone who can walk and chew gum at the same time.
  23. I agree. A little bit of euphoria because of the bailout bill. When the full extent of the economic damage hits it will cause another drop. Trump is taking some overly simplistic criticism for targeting April 15th as a ‘restart’ of the American economy. Although it has never totally shutdown I do question how much latitude the USA has in continuing a massive shutdown. It might sound insensitive but taken within best practices they might have to reboot. I have ave been threw many of these pullbacks in the markets. Never seen a virus as the cause. It will cause much harm but it too will pass. I will wait to month end and do a full review. I have stocks that I have ‘lusted’ after for decades which will be on my list. Happy hunting.
