Investing in the stock market - Discussion

You are an educator, thanks. At least I am using limits now on occasion. Your right that I am usually a buy and hold even tho that is laughed at now a days. I suspect most of the volatility today is from the computerized trading you are describing. I am not sure it will deter my portfolio build. -
I don’t have a solution. I said above what I thought would happen. At a minimum we likely see the equivalent of the housing crisis the USA went thru in 2008. Our government is not being ran by the sharpest tools in the shed. At some point Canada’s creditworthiness will be brought into question. It is whether the Americans can survive or not that will make the real difference. They have a better chance than we do. To some extent it is ironic that the energy industry was sacrificed in Canada to placate who knows what. I had hoped that exploiting oil could provide the cash Canada could use to develop a actual economic plan. Always have been price takers. Quite honestly if my fears come true I do not expect Canada will survive as one country. When the federal government cannot meet their promises the finger pointing will tear the country apart. Maybe I have to pessimistic an outlook.

That I can agree with you on. What I can see happen is a massive printing of money which will devalue the debt. It simply places a tax on everyone. People will accept the monetary handouts without realizing their buying power is shrinking. When you are a country like Canada that imports so much the fallout will be huge.

Your in a dream world.

What secret pot of gold are you using for that? There will be an end to the mak3 believe money these politicians are paying out now let alone increasing it.

Sorry but I don’t see it that way. The stock markets give me the opportunity to own part of businesses that I would not otherwise have. When I buy a portion of that business I am rewarded with a dividend + a capital gain as that company grows. The stock markets provide me with the liquidity to sell my holding in a quick manner if I need funds. If you see gamblers in the markets they are not investors. I see any number of poorly informed people who are looking for a quick buck. They usually do poorly or even lose their money. The stock markets do not provide a safety net. Putting money there should be a very calculated effort with a clear plan. -

I am sure there are people and companies who are as you suggest. As someone who ran businesses this is not a generalization that comes close to my experience. If you truly believe that then you should learn a bit more about business. -

No particulars. I am waiting until April. Oil could be a sink hole for a while. I thought the bottom was at $48 WTI. -
I would go back and review the economics of a lemonade stand if you think ‘the financial system’ is based on nothing. Seriously?

People should stop and think about what you just said. Reinflate! There is really no other option as the level of debt exceeds the ability to pay. Many people I talk to don’t have assets other than their homes so finance is something they don’t dwell on. What they don’t understand is the hidden tax of inflation. All their costs will increase. Imagine a 5 or 10% increase in your cost of living. That will be tame compared to what could happen. All politicians left or right bear responsibility for not explaining this scenario.

Totally agree. I will start a major review at the end of the month. Sitting on cash makes a lot of sense. It isn’t just the virus it is the cost to overcome it and the precarious global debt which will be worse after the virus. -

Worse case scenario the debt structure will come into play. I am a ENB owner as well. ENB has a lot of debt and a question might be if they could refinance in a major crisis. It is a utility for much of their revenue so I am not to worried. Yet? -

If the dividend isn’t supported then it has to be cut. -

I agree with you on ENB and SU. I would focus on blue chip dividend payers. FCF, Margin, and growth. How does the virus affect their outlooks? Still worried that the virus could trigger the debt crisis that has been looming for many years. If that happens being in the markets will be devastating. -
How is he supposed to show a test result the next day? If he could get a test it takes days to get a result. If you self isolate for 14 days I am assuming you are clear by that time if you do not manifest C-19 by then.

Sorry to hear about the cancellations. I was only trying to lighten a otherwise challenging day. Keep your social distance and stay safe. -

You can be so cruel. I think I was ill informed. Doesn’t that count for anything? Some companies are having their revenue guaranteed. I am self isolated over here in Maui. Lots of stress. It should be worth something? I tried to suck it up yesterday but the paper straw in my drink had gone soft. I am questioning my self worth. Do I play any role in society other than a source of income for the government? -

Let me see. I make my living in the stock market. Turdeau is guaranteeing everyone’s wages. Does this mean he will cover my losses? Am I expecting to much? -

There will be companies and individuals who will try to profit from this. Like the women selling TP out of her SUV. There will be others who step up to help people. The first priority of business is to survive. If you don’t survive there is nothing left. In trying to survive sometimes mistakes are made. Sad but true. Passing judgment after the fact is inevitable. -
If AB wasn’t the cash cow it is they wouldn’t be so afraid of separation. Turdeau is in 7th heaven because now he is paying everyone.

I have had enough of that industry. Going the independent route is a recipe for disaster unless your volume is significant. Credit cards, loyalty programs, guaranteed supply and reliable suppliers. Last year I was in the business our pump margin was $0.028 per litre. I had done a depreciation schedule that told me I needed $0.046 per litre. I never got that big a margin in the 5 years I owned the place. What we had was a big convenience store that did a good business.
