  1. No one knows and that is what creates a market. Even today during a sell off there are buyers. I am one of those old guys and focus on blue chip stocks to hold over the years. Some I have owned for 20 years. Build your core group, establish a cash flow in the portfolio and market timing becomes less of an issue. The issue that haunts every investor is whether this time it is different. We have been thru 10 years of up markets and complacency can happen. I like to think of myself as a value investor, a quant guy, That makes a lot of sense at a market PE 14 but does it ar PE 21? At some point equilibrium reestablishes itself.
  2. Some of us don’t agree with your take on how well AB has done under eastern rule. You spend a lot of time defending your line of thought but I cannot agree anymore.
  3. When the comedy show is a hit why would you cut any of the stars? I hear Amy and Pete left to make movies financed by Mike.
  4. I see this as an opportunity. Between people panic and a massive share of the market controlled by ETF’s the move down is providing excellent buys. Look for low debt companies, high margins, steady cash flows. There will be a cure for this virus and the world will continue. Bonds will not be a long term option. The biggest issue is not the virus but world debt. It will kill more people than the virus will. There is no easy fix and it will get nasty.
  5. Agreed. A few years back the Avs made playoffs and everyone thought they were on their way. Instead they slide backwards and many were calling for Sakic’s head. His team learned some lessons and he added to his depth and talent. Vancouver has a good way to go yet.
  6. I am wondering if the Canucks have to make playoffs for TT to want to resign in Vancouver?
  7. My daughter works in downtown Calgary at a dental firm. Their business is down almost 20% in 2 years. Been layoffs in their office. Dental insurance is running out so only absolute necessary work being done. She tells me her coworkers are all mad and many of them and their patients say they will vote Wexit. When end I was at a conference in Van last month there were many AB oil people there. These people were talking about it as well. This is a big deal as having the money available makes a lot happen. Put it on a ballot and the number of Wexit votes will be shocking. My impression is there is a wait and see on the report Kenney funded led by Preston Manning. His rep has been downgraded a lot and there isn’t much patience for his pro Canada sympathies. Kenney should know by now that he can be swept aside especially since that a provincial wing of Wexit is registered.
  8. They slit a goats throat at center ice as part of the opening ceremony. It simply doesn’t get any better than that! Only in Russia you say, what a pity!
  9. Recessions always seem to trigger speculation on Armageddon scenarios. If so many people weren’t on a fiscal cliff already they might be less worried. Recessions increase unemployment and usually increase the cost of money. People have to adjust their lifestyles to meet their anticipated expenses. As a rule most people don’t do long term planning and don’t understand much about finances. At every opportunity I challenge politicians to increase financial education in schools. This is never received very enthusiastically. Keep the plebs dumb and easy to manipulated is my only conclusion. Most political candidates have no credititentials for the jobs they aspire to. This attitude is no different whether left or right.
  10. Hughes is not a Orr clone. Not close. Orr had a physical side to his game that Hughes never will. Orr had a 2nd gear in his skating that Qinn doesn’t have. Comparables would be edge work, vision and maybe a shot.
  11. I thought the Canucks were beyond the knight in shining armour phase. Depietro has more to gain taking his Comets to a Calder run than being sacrificed in Vancouver. Play Demko or his back up until Markstrom returns. Canucks are not serious Cup contenders this year so stay the course. This group has to experience the losing or winning on their merits. They are still in it. Go Canucks.
  12. Trump might be overconfident and thinks he is above the fray as he pretty much self financed in 2016. I see he is actively raising money this go around. Having gone broke a couple of times I doubt ‘bankers’ worry him much. I think the idea that his base worships him is a tad much. Right or wrong he speaks to what matters to them. Sanders is no different. There are a lot of people who are a struggling and both of these politicians speak to that.
  13. Oversimplification is the lifeblood of politics. Neither left or right want you to look to closely at their promises. Politicians like to pass themselves off as wise old owls but they are certainly, mostly, not that. Most discussions are subjective drivel. As a fiscal conservative I try to make the numbers a yardstick that does not lie. But of course even that is debatable.
  14. That a fundamentally racist society elected a black man 2x as POTUS. People cannot be all bad.
  15. Have you ever talked to a communist who wasn’t sincere?
  16. They pulled it back together in 2008. The worse case is that confidence in government is lost and people hunker down. Deflation followed by massive inflation. Think Argentina, Venezula or Zimbabwe.
  17. I have great hopes for Pods but Russian players will always make me nervous. As bad as their government is most Russians I have met love their people and country. Only been there once but that fact stood out. I take some comfort in knowing that Igor Larionov has some influence over both Pods and Try.
  18. What are the Demos going to do RS. Their epic failure over the past 4 years will go down in the books. Actually you could tac on the Obama years as well. Have to go back to Clinton to hit any positives. If they nominate Biden who will be VP? True with Sanders as well as these people will likely be POTUS. Maybe that is the way to insert a stealth candidate. Sanders is a communist flake and Biden cannot keep a train of thought. This is the best that progressives can manage? They deserve to lose all 3 branches of government. Trump should win win in November via a abdication of DNC responsibility. The Demos are now running their federal game like they do their cities. The rats of Baltimore are going national. In Trump’s 2nd term there will be a global debt crisis that has the potential of being decades long. IMHO it is all about who comes out the other side. My money is on the USA. America is already restructuring itself. I question whether the Chinese will be the equivalent of what the Japanese have become. Canada will tag along as the colony it has always been. Cannot govern itself and no one cares. How will progressives rationalize this when their go to examples of devine governance collapse all over Euroland?
  19. You must have watched the ‘Vikings’ series with extra interest. You would enjoy a trip to Normandy I think. Nothing cheap in EU.
  20. Many people now think it is a human right to have access to the USA and Canada. Our fearless leader J.T. seems to think so. What is amusing is is the hate focus on TRUMP. It is my take that there hasn’t been GOP candidate since Barry Goldwater who was ‘fit’ to be POTUS. How you establish a middle ground is beyond me.
  21. Whether Trump has benefited blacks or not will be proven in November. 2 blacks being interviewed on CNN said Trump is polling at 12% in that community and said if he keeps those numbers he will win re-election. Trump camp claims they will hit 20%. Democratic claim on the minority vote is taking hits because their record in constituencies they have ran for decades is brutal. I don’t see the appeal between Bernie and Trump being that different at street level. Both promise improvements but through different means. Trumps policies have 3 years of experience behind him. Is that enough? Probably.
  22. Own PXT and SGY. One buys 10% of their shares back each year and the other pays over 10% dividend sustainable down to $40 WTI oil. I could see VET nixing their dividend on easing the hurt by saying they were buying stock back instead.
