[PGT] Minnesota Wild at Vancouver Canucks | Feb. 19, 2020

SO many good points that I cannot comment on them all. Going into the season we had Petey into his 2nd year and a Hughes we had high hopes for but ???. Going into the last 20 games we now know we have a premium rear guard in the league and a young center who is scary at 1 ppg and getting better. Add Miller and now TT. The biggest challenge Benning has now is making significant improvements on the d-side. He needs 2 more top 4 d-men IMO. That might take a year or two if left to the prospect pool. Vancouver will become a destination for UFA's who want another CUP shot. I still think this group will make playoffs. Even with a 1 round and out the experience will be great for the group. Canucks are building towards 2023 and unless there is a serious falloff I do not see Benning or Green going anywhere. -
I kinda agree. A option would be to move Sutter up on Bo's line and drop Ericksson down. Sutter hits the net more than 21 does.
-
Or does Barry come to Van as a UFA this summer?
-
This is where the hype of the TDL trumps logical thought. Simmonds does not make much sense especially when the prospect pool has options that make more sense. It is a great goal to make playoffs but the Canucks will not be serious contenders. If that is the assumption then the playoffs are an opportunity to give this team some experience and an opportunity by management to evaluate their players and needs moving forward. Benning isn't moving OJ or Woo.

[PGT] Minnesota Wild at Vancouver Canucks | Feb. 19, 2020

I thought Minny was playing a 2-1-2 game pretty consistently. Any opposing coach playing Van knows the weakest part of the Canuck game is in the Canuck d-zone. Minny was fore checking with 2 deep and the 3rd forward often dropped down to outnumber the Canuck defense in the corner puck battles. Minny got to lucky goals with deflections but zone pressure does that for you. As you mentioned deep pressure opens up the neutral zone which helped Minny as well. As Green said I thought this was one of Van's better games in the last 7. IMHO a little Miller, Hughes and EP40 have rubbed off on their team mates. Tey are trying to make finesse plays when shots on net might have been the better choice. Tuna was passing last night when his heavy shot might have produced more. Mott and Hughes had great games. Ericksson is not a top 6 player. Green likes his vet plays but I would play Big Mac. Mac is not a top 6 but if I didn't play him there it would be on the 3rd and move Sutter to 2LF. -
One of the big disappointments of the season when he went down. I thought he was really starting to break out. Good puck possession player. Even if he was not in the long term plan his trade value was improving. Likely out for the season.

The fact that Benning was willing to let Madden go shows a great confidence in the prospect pool. I could see Tanev giving up a bit of salary in exchange for term. Not sure how JB will view that but I also think JB is pretty loyal to players who have performed. I can see Tanev as effective in playoffs but as a 4 or 5D. Sorry to say I cannot think Stecher would be. Can JB get Tanev on a 3 year term? He might.

Pete Buttigieg's father was President of the International Gramscian Movement. A communist front for infiltrating the education system and media. Wiki -
I can see Tanev re-upping as well even at a discount. The issue might become term. How much term can you give him? If you re-sign him it has to be with the idea he will be 2RD in 2023 where as he might be at 3RD level. Tough decisions for JB.
-
He has a rep for being hot and cold. He has had a better than expected season and should help the kids n playoffs. It doesn't change what Benning has to do with every player. Evaluate performance against those who can replace them. Will Pearson be a top 6 player in 2023 and if he is will he contribute to a serious CUP run?

Sanders is a communist. Pete Buttigieg is a communist. Buttigieg's father headed the Gransci Movement which was a placing of communist into education and media so as to influence opinion. Capitalism has not met this challenge and will likely fade away as a result. Free enterprise historically has operated within the democratic process much better than communism. Inevitably communism degenerates into dictatorship. -

I don't support corporate "welfare" but putting this in context we are talking a $22 trillion economy. Isn't this "welfare" in the form of tax credits for directed investment? Does the discussion come down to tax credits directed by corporations or retaining that money and having government direct that spending? If we do away with corporate "welfare" and force balanced budgets I am all for it. What is happening is the politicians are leveraging taxation by spending more than they can ever repay. It devalues the income of their citizens which is another indirect tax. Neither the GOP or the Demos can repay the debt they have wracked up. AT some point they will have to devalue the USD to continue. Canada will do the same but the outlook is far worse. -
[PGT] Anaheim Ducks at Vancouver Canucks | Feb. 16, 2020

Not the end of the world that Demko has a iffy game. It will get harder as the end of the season looms. I called for this group to make playoffs and they still have a solid shot. I don't want Benning making deals to bring in more older players in an effort to go deep. This group is still very young and the run up to the season end and hopefully a round of CUP play deepens their experience and awareness. Move those out who will not be a part of 2023 and play some of the Utica players who will be here in 2023. MacEwan, Bailey, Rafferty and Brisbois, play them. -
People come here and give opinions. The last thing I would ever suspect is that Ferland would take a poll of CDC posters and make a health decision. Seriously? Using your thought process then why should most of the comments on here be allowed? Almost none of the posters on here are athletes or hockey management so why should they post their opinions? IMO the underlying theme of fans is a concern for Michael Ferland's long term health.
-
I still rely on the eye test for performance. IMO Big Mac was the best forward and Hughes the best d-man against Anaheim. MacEwan's biggest challenge is his skating and he has improved noticeably. He was generating ozone plays while most of his team mates were not. Playoffs or not I would play MacEwan and sit Schaller. If this spring is about playing critical games and amping the development of this roster towards serious CUP contention then I don't see a place for Ericksson or Schaller. I also like the idea of sitting either Steacher or Benn for a few games to see Rafferty and Brisbois.
-
I don't see Crosby as a legit comparison. That said I am no doctor. Crosby plays a strong game but he was not an enforcer like Ferland who had many fights. He took a lot of hits to the head in those fights. The odd thing about my attraction to hockey is the physical play and even the fighting and yet I have no interest in Boxing. Go figure. What fans don't see in the fallout from fisticuffs. Many of these players suffer from long term disabilities both physical and mental. I suspect fighting will be gone for good within the decade.
-
IMHO fans should be looking at the CAP structure of the Canucks for hints on where Benning has to go with his roster. If the bottom line goal is being a serious CUP contender in 2023 then hard decisions have to be made by the TDL or this summer. Baer - gone Goldy - gone Schaller - gone Ferland - LTIR Ericksson - some kind of deal or buyout, has to go Leivo, Virtanen, Mott: resigned Roussel, Sutter: one will go Fantenberg: good season I would resign Stecher: Great team guy but if Tryamkin is coming back he has to be moved Tanev: a solid season and a 4D or 5D on a Cup contender. His CAP and term hit probably determine whether he stays. IMO term can only be 3 years. Marky: has to be resigned Demko: has not got enough games for a decision Unknowns: Tryamkin: is he coming back or not? Will Benning know in time to react to other moves he might make? CAP Limit: Bettman is renegotiating the American TV contract. A new deal has every potential of solving a lot of contract CAP issues. Rumors of $10 to $15 million a year to each NHL club might be coming. For teams like Vancouver this would be a game savor.

[Speculation] Canucks interested in Wayne Simmonds

Keeping Stecher smacks of building a regular season contender versus a CUP contender. It works during the 82 games but not the 16 that count. -

I don't know what the disease is in SJ but JB should stay away. -
I have never forgot Wayne Maki. I saw the stick swinging and it was pretty sickening.

As you said there will be room on the defense for young players. Sizable American cohort on the Canuck roster. Boeser and Hughes can take him and Madden out for dinner.

Interestingly GP's are on the highest risk for job loss as technology is integrated into the healthcare system. I invested in CVS Healthcare in the USA because they were introducing Health units into their drugstores so that people could see a healthcare provider without having to see a doctor. They have over 1500 such units up and running already. They handle scenarios you mentioned. I also invest in Telus for its Telus Health division. Healthcare systems on line and a records system. The BC Health Portal is a major advance but you have to wonder why it took so long. My son works in the operating room and tells us that the inefficiency and poor management is huge. Costs will be shaved off both the Canadian and American systems because as Alf said they are unsustainable.
