Joe Biden Debates Donald Trump September 29
Boudrias replied to DonLever's topic in Off-Topic General
The reason for my comment was a previous poster seemed to indicate that BC'ers had no out of pocket healthcare cost. It made me think there were likely a lot of people who think the same way. I am not challenging the need. My cursory review indicated to me that the USA pays roughly 20% more per capita. Healthcare outcomes can vary a lot based on what is being treated. Healthcare cost in America are a direct example of the fallout in income disparity. We spent time in a USA hospital last spring with a broken arm. Our conversation with a nurse was illuminating. HE said over 50% of the people in their service area would not be able to with stand a serious health issue let alone a broken arm. Two relatively young (39 & 46) American friends made the following choices. One insured he and his son at a cost of $1100 per month and the other decided not to injure at all. His rationale was that he would take a bet on good health and invest the savings on financial security and buying coverage later in life. The American system forces these discussions the Canadian system does not. Canadians fear rationing and Americans the direct costs. As Alf rightly points out the system will not sustain itself but is not unique in the overall budget in either country. Canadians seem to take pride in being a more caring society but the Americans I know are very caring people. Both governments deficit finance and in so doing disguise their in direct taxation of the citizens by debasing the buying power of their currency and by foisting debt on future generations. -

I was paying $75 per month for my wife and myself. The BC government has elminated that charge. I highly doubt most Canadians have any idea what it cost for a hospital visit. They have no idea what health care budgets are. Also factor in the massive deficits. 2019 BC spent $21B on health for 5.071 million people = $4141/capita. The government of Canada spent $253.5 B for 37.59 million people = $6744/capita (Some of the BC budget receives federal funding) $4141 + $6744 = $10,885 per capita in BC. So health care is not free. A good yardstick would be the signage you usually see posted in Emergency Rooms. They post the cost for hospital services if the patient has no coverage. -
I don't have a FB account.

I was recently at a conference where Martin Armstrong of Armstrong Economics spoke. His concern over failing pension plans both government and private is global not just the CPP. Governments world wide are debasing their currencies thru QE. When you see figures like the CPP being worth $300 B now and worth $540 B in 10 years it doesn't really mean a lot if the buying power of that dollar has seriously eroded. Armstrong consults with central banks all over the world. Google his name and read some of his conclusions. You can choose whether to believe him or not. I do not believe the assumptions that the CPP publish. These are the same people who regularly assume inflation of 2% or less. Review the forecasted rates of return over even the next 10 years. When pension funds have mandated % levels of bonds that yield 2% or less tell me how they will get returns of 8% in their overall portfolios. It is one thing to assume these funds will not fail but they are already doing so at the municipal level in the USA and in the EU. As I said I am not interested in debating you. It is a subject that all citizens should be concerned about and should investigate.

Apparently Chinese citizens are fly into Canada and then flying to the USA to avoid the American flight restrictions. When I went thru YVR last week I saw no overt screening for sick people at security. But that was domestic not international. I don't know what tools they could be using.

Hillary is already getting her "ducks" in a row. Campaign header "The Revenge Tour". Bloomberg will top off her "shadow bank accounts". -
If there was any desire for Bogasian Buffalo would have dealt him to recover what they could. Vancouver is way past the desperate stage they don't need this guy. The org depth is well enough along to have them play games in the NHL. In fact they should be playing.
-
One has to ask how he got this far along in the recovery process to have this happen. Not saying it could not happen but questioning the evaluation process. They do have to shut him down. I read a story on Biz-Nasty and his ongoing struggle with post hockey health issues. It has to be pretty scary for these guys.

Very interesting post. This is a very political community with a few posters who seem more interested in dominating the conversation rather than listening to others. My views are right of center and based on financial considerations. People who do not agree with me automatically label me with all sorts of characteristics that I don't think I have. Being right of center does not make a person racist, ignorant, socially unaware or uncaring. When challenged many posters quickly dive into a almost juvenile reaction. As a result I usually leave.

Over on smalldeadanimals they are showing video of dead people in the streets and health workers carrying guns. Not much detail.

RS Wexit will succeed simply because what we know as Canada will not. Turdeau is no leader but the leadership in the country is extremely weak. The CPC effort to date is a joke and the Liebel caucus has no standouts. So I say Wexit will succeed as the debt crisis will destroy any semblance of unity in Canada when the finger pointing starts. Social contracts like OAS and CPP are failing now let alone what happens in a sustained global downturn. Most pensions in the country have a ROI of 8% built into their forecasts as that is the number needed to make their actuarial numbers work. IMHO Quebec will fan the flames of Wexit as it supports their own aspirations. AB, SASK, MAN and large parts of BC will see the writing on the wall and move to a separate country. Not necessarily by choice but by necessity.

Coronavirus reportedly spreading to North Korea

If the border is closed to China the Norks will truly suffer. Many are already malnurished. I doubt Fearless Leader will be dropping any pounds. If the people were smart they would be giving him lots of kisses. -
Gaudette is in his 1st full NHL season and is scoring at + 0.50 ppg. Most of the season at center. At 24 fans should be very happy with his season. I love his drives down the middle. What he is learning this year will really manifest next year. I seriously respect Green's development of this kid as he could have moved him to the wing and put Sutter back at 3C, he hasn't. The center position with the Canucks is extremely strong.

You know JB Alf. He likely has his grease boards all set up with his desired targets listed. I would think a 2nd rdr and a prospect. A prospect with high likelihood of being a roster player by 2023. For me it is all about the timeline focusing on 2023. CAP issues threaten most long term chances of keeping a young roster together. Look at the Laffers.
-
Fans might get frustrated by not seeing more of Big Mac but I see his development as being a classic approach by management. They have brought him along slow and steady. Less chance of him getting overwhelmed. NHL speed and quality of play has to be intimidating for the first 20 games. I'm hoping he stays with the club at least until the TDL.
-
IMHO it is not about the quality of Tanev's game it is whether he can be resigned as a UFA at a price and term that doesn't upset the CAP structure needed as the team moves towards serious CUP contention in 2023. At 30 on a new contract with term does Tanev fit? Probably does if Stecher goes and Edler takes a cut when his deal finishes. It is pretty obvious that Tanev's game benefits from better puck possession and faster breakouts.

The hi-lites of the Twins last game were a stark reminder of all the changes that Benning has done from that group 2 1/2 years ago. Wow. It looked like 2/3's of that roster are gone. If nothing else this year has shown that the biggest need on the current roster is on the d-side. Regular games with +35 shots on goal will mean a quick exit from playoffs this year if they make it. The Canucks making playoffs is what I expect. I do not expect them to go much further than the 1st round. Anything more is a huge bonus. Playoffs this year is all about exposure and development. Perhaps weaknesses will become more obvious. Maybe a player or two establish themselves more. Totally agree with you, use the org depth. Trading players off the current roster by the TDL would be a huge move especially if it is for draft picks or prospects. We know JB likely wants to move some vets since the CAP and UFA status will be an issue.

Hard to believe but not the first story heard about what appears to be casual approach to the details of development. One of the advantages of Utica is supposed to be a easier travel sched which would allow more practice and off ice training. Not fully informed but it appears that the off ice program has not been developed as much as one would expect.

[PGT] Chicago Blackhawks at Vancouver Canucks | Feb. 12, 2020
Boudrias replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
I find Matty Ohlund a kind of mystery man when he comes to Vancouver. Probably his personality but he seems very detached and aloof. He is one of a the all time great Canuck d-men. Never saw an interview. Glad he got a great reception on the ice when introduced. Quiet man? -
I think you nailed it. If nothing else we have learned that Marky values the team more than anything else. As you suggest I think term means more than the $'s. When you look at the roster and realize the pending CAP issues I think he takes less. At the ceremony yesterday it was repeated many times about the culture the Twins built over their 20 years. They took a discount to provide a chance for a CUP. Burrows did. This isn't lost on a quality person like Markstrom.

Would you like to see Kesler in the Ring of Honour?
Boudrias replied to iBlueGreen's topic in Canucks Talk
Sounds bad. My son was in the Bantam Provincials 1992. Rick Ley said we could bring the team in at Canuck practice. We were told that we had to sit across the ice from the dressing rooms and could not make any noise. The boys were never acknowledged. The only players who gave them any notice was Tim Hunter, Eza Tikanen and the back up tender who I cannot remember his name. No autographs allowed. It was disappointing but the boys still enjoyed it. I hold no grudges with Kesler. I hope he is well received. His actions were not always what we would have hoped but his nature is what probably got him to the NHL. He had so many great games for the Canucks. -
Same happened in with the Kootenai here in the East Kootenays. Measles. I also read native histories of mystery diseases that pre-dated whites that wiped out whole villages. Disease but more importantly starvation. Starvation regularly killed many natives before and after whites arrived. My impression is that many people deal with history in the abstract as they cannot envision how challenging life was back then. The introduction of the horse to plains tribes was truly revolutionary. Mobility yielded larger hunting territories, better defense and easier life style.

Benning sneaks a wringer into the Laval game while Burr is in Vancouver smoozing with the Twins. Love it!
-
I don't know what history you read but not the same as I did. When the whites came west it was no picnic for either whites or native. The various tribes regularly fought one another and enslaved people as needed. The only thing that made whites 'superior' was their technology. The natives wanted the knives, pots and especially the guns. These goods made their lives much easier. In many cases the dif been life and death. Natives didn't have conservation officers. They killed what they thought they needed and weren't always accurate. The Iroquois and Cree were are big part of the Hudson's Bay Co. Many never returned home and settled in the west.

Leivo was at the 0.5 ppg rate. I expect him back if he isn't traded. He was having a breakout season.
